Book The Fertility Doctor s Guide to Overcoming Infertility

Download or read book The Fertility Doctor s Guide to Overcoming Infertility written by Mark P. Trolice and published by Harvard Common Press. This book was released on 2020-01-07 with total page 219 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Give yourself the best-possible odds for getting pregnant and having a baby with this concise, expert, and encouraging companion as your guide! In the only general guide to infertility written by a medical doctor who specializes in the subject, Mark Trolice, MD—who is board-certified in both OB/GYN and REI (Reproductive Endocrinology and Infertility)—shares the practical knowledge he has gained from working in infertility medicine for years, with many hundreds of patients, alongwith the warmth and wisdom he has acquired from getting to know prospective parents from all kind of backgrounds. The journey from infertility to fertility, from childlessness to a brand-new baby, can be long and arduous. It involves complicated medical diagnoses, a wide range of treatment options, a host of potential lifestyle changes, lots of emotional ups and downs, and—even with the best medical insurance—challenging financial decisions. Your doctors cannot decide everything for you, and that is why an authoritative and comprehensive book, written in clear and understandable language for the layperson, is essential. This is that book. The book opens with an exploration of all the possible causes of infertility, covering both couples who have never been pregnant and ones who have had recurrent losses of pregnancies. Unique among infertility guides, this volume gives roughly equal weight to male and female causes, which is important because about 40% of infertility cases are due to men's issues—and some couples need to address issues in both the prospective mother and prospective father. It covers endometriosis, fibroids, POS (Polycystic Ovarian Syndrome), tubal factor, male factor, and other possible causes. Next it looks at your treatment options. Importantly, these are not just medical interventions, but they also include lifestyle changes you alone can make, involving sleep, diet, exercise, and other forms of self-care. Among medical options, IUI (Intrauterine Insemination), IVF (In Vitro Fertilization), and various surgical procedures are covered in detail. Some couples are lucky to have a short journey to fertility. For others, the process takes years. With a gentle and sure hand, and non-judgmentally, Dr. Trolice guides you through the many decisions you need to make along the way, such as whether or not to continue treatments, whether to change practitioners or treatments, and whether it is a good idea to continue to spend money on procedures not covered by your insurance. He understands that these are emotionally weighty decisions that involve the future of your family, and he provides ample grounds for optimism and hope, empowering you as you take this journey.

Book Infertility Beating the Odds and Doctors

Download or read book Infertility Beating the Odds and Doctors written by David J. Johnson and published by Createspace Independent Publishing Platform. This book was released on 2016-10-31 with total page 144 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: David Johnson and his wife Traci experienced the path a lot of couples walk: prevent pregnancy for several years, say yes to having a baby, wait and hope, wait and hope, go to doctors, take tests and more tests, produce humiliating samples-until the dreaded verdict 'infertility' is pronounced in a doctor's office. Meanwhile, friends became pregnant with ease, relatives asked intrusive questions, and co-workers wondered why the couple needed so much time off from work. The Johnsons faced a choice of three doors: expensive, no-guarantee IVF (in-vitro fertilization), adoption, or childlessness. After a doctor blithely dismissed the possibility that vitamins or food could improve David's extremely low sperm count, the Johnsons decided to ignore the doctor's conclusion, intensified their research, and came up with a plan. They embarked on a natural path to parenthood that included a healthier diet, acupuncture, and a relaxing vacation that was cheaper than one IVF treatment. David Johnson details each component in a process that resulted in exceptional success: three beautiful daughters conceived naturally.

Book Creating Life Against the Odds

Download or read book Creating Life Against the Odds written by Ilona Laszlo Higgins, M.D. and published by . This book was released on 2006-11-01 with total page 240 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Creating Life Against the Odds Most prospective parents, when arriving at the decision to have children, presume their journey will be an exciting and rewarding one, resulting in the birth of a healthy baby. When those dreams are shattered because they cannot conceive or miscarry, they ask, "Why me? What did I do wrong?" The trauma of infertility is as devastating to one's self-esteem as any other life crisis, it can destroy intimate relationships or it can bring out the best in us. In her book, Creating Life Against the Odds, Dr. Higgins, an obstetrician/gynecologist, describes her own experience becoming a mother by ovum donation. She also shares the first hand accounts of dozens of others who have turned to assisted reproductive technology (ART) in order to realize their dreams of becoming parents. These are stories Dr. Higgins has heard from her patients and from hundreds of women (and men) she has counseled or communicated with through confidential Internet support groups. The stories of these courageous individuals became the inspiration for Creating Life Against the Odds. Dr. Higgins takes us along on their journeys as they struggle with infertility, as they explore the options that medical science now offers, as they meet obstacles, and as they adjust to repeated loss. She also takes us into the minds and hearts of sperm and ovum donors, surrogates, and gestational carriers, looking at what makes them want to lend such an intimate, helping hand. Are they like organ donors? Do they do it for financial gain? When ART enters the picture and donors or surrogates are used, how should we describe their relationship to the children they helped create? And what about the children? Are they like adoptees? How do they understand their birth origins? And what should their parents tell them? Dr. Higgins' wisdom as a well-traveled physician, who has delivered babies and counseled patients from many cultures, allows her to tackle tough practical and ethical questions from a global perspective. These questions are answered honestly, with deep compassion and respect for those courageous men and women who have sought the help of ART and who belong, as a result, to a special group of parents whose success in family-building is due to an extraordinary commitment and a selfless expression of love.

Book Inconceivable 20th Anniversary Edition

Download or read book Inconceivable 20th Anniversary Edition written by Julia Indichova and published by Harmony. This book was released on 2002-02-19 with total page 210 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A memoir of hope for the thousands of women struggling with infertility, from one who beat the odds by simply tuning in to her body and tapping her well of sheer determination. At a time when more and more women are trying to get pregnant at increasingly advanced ages, fertility specialists and homeopathic researchers boast endless treatment options. But when Julia Indichova made the rounds of medical doctors and nontraditional healers, she was still unable to conceive a child. It was only when she forsook their financially and emotionally draining advice, turning inward instead, that she finally met with reproductive success. Inconceivable recounts this journey from hopeless diagnoses to elated motherhood. Anyone who has faced infertility will relate to Julia’s desperate measures: acupuncture, unidentifiable black-and-white pellets, herb soup, foul-smelling fruit, even making love on red sheets. Five reproductive endocrinologists told her that there was no documented case of anyone in her hormonal condition getting pregnant, forcing her to finally embark on her own intuitive regimen. After eight caffeine-free, nutrient-rich, yoga-laden months, complemented by visualization exercises, Julia received amazing news; incredibly, she was pregnant. Nine months later she gave birth to a healthy girl. Unlike the many infertility books that take a clinical “how to” approach, Inconceivable simply professes the wisdom of giving expert status back to the patient. Julia’s self-discovery, and her ability to see her body as an ally once again, yield a beautiful message about the importance of honoring the body’s innate powers, and the power of life itself.

Our nation is troubled by rates of teen pregnancies and newborn deaths that are worse than almost all others in the Western world. Science and Babies is a straightforward presentation of the major reproductive issues we face that suggests answers for the public. The book discusses how the clash of opinions on sex and family planning prevents us from making a national commitment to reproductive health; why people in the United States have fewer contraceptive choices than those in many other countries; what we need to do to improve social and medical services for teens and people living in poverty; how couples should "shop" for a fertility service and make consumer-wise decisions; and what we can expect in the futureâ€"featuring interesting accounts of potential scientific advances.

Book excerpt: MED Personal narratives are an important consumer health resource, and Inconceivable is no exception. At 42, Indichova was told that in vitro fertilization using donated eggs represented her only chance for a second child. The book relates her journey through secondary infertility to a successful, spontaneous pregnancy, which she credits to her use of alternative healing practices from acupuncture to imagery to yoga. This is the first such account written from a patient's perspective. Indichova is a Czech immigrant and a teacher with a theatrical background, which makes for an interesting narrative. Unfortunately, her cafeteria-style approach to alternative medicine is more likely to confuse than enlighten readers who lack experience with this subject. The real value of her account is its stress on personal empowerment. This book will make any reader feel stronger, no matter what her medical politics. Recommended for libraries with strong collections in women's health but not for alternative medicine collections. Catherine Arnott Smith, Ctr. for Biomedical Informatics, Univ. of Pittsburgh-
