Book excerpt: Matheus Mayer is a man tormented by past woes. Accused of killing his family, he's trying to prove his innocence and that his daughter is still alive. When he's sent to a new Psychiatric Hospital – built in an isolated region – Matheus finds only five other inmates. Each one has a completely distinctive personality and each seems to have their own goals. A special characteristic, however, seems to unite them. Dark enigmas start to echo inside the institution, specially after the arrival of a mysterious man by the name of Heitor Velasques and his team of researchers. Their goals are unknown. Matheus starts to feel the presence of supernatural beings that seem to inhabit the Institution. These beings bring about unique feelings, as if the divine and the profane were fighting for dominion. One by one, the inmates are called by the research team for an experiment. After it, they can’t be found anywhere, and some physical and sensory changes seem to transform the Psychiatric Hospital's facilities into something completely different. Now there's pain. nauseating smells, flames, and throbbing walls. With the help of the Hospital's own employees, Matheus Mayer starts to unveil Heitor's motivation and finds himself entangled in a dangerous and complex game, in which, due to neural interface devices and experimental drugs, the patient's minds are invaded in search of the key to the realm of gods. It's time to explore the depths of the unknown in a journey towards a reunion. How far would you go to save someone you love?

Download or read book Commentary On The Historia Apollonii Regis Tyri written by G. A. A. Kortekaas and published by BRILL. This book was released on 2007 with total page 954 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This commentary is the sequel to G.A.A. Kortekaas' The Story of Apollonius, King of Tyre: A Study of Its Greek Origin and an Edition of the Two Oldest Latin Recensions. Whereas the critical edition (2004) could only briefly touch upon the numerous problems raised by the text concerning the origin (Latin or rather Greek?), the time and place of creation, the genesis of the text, the interrelation between the numerous manuscripts, especially between the two main recensions RA and RB, the present volume does address these issues in a detailed commentary, word by word and line by line. The many links with the Greek Novel, which today stands in the centre of scholarly interest, are striking. In this commentary the author attempts to show that the novel originated in Greece, or more precisely Asia Minor, possibly Tarsus. The two recensions (RA and RB) are closely compared, preference generally being given to RA. The volume discusses in detail the most recent publications on the subject. All these aspects make the present commentary attractive to scholars of many different disciplines.

Download or read book The Shadow of an Ass written by Jeffrey P. Ulrich and published by University of Michigan Press. This book was released on 2024-11-06 with total page 381 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Jeffrey Ulrich’s The Shadow of an Ass addresses fundamental questions about the reception and aesthetic experience of Apuleius’ Metamorphoses, popularly known as The Golden Ass, by situating the novel in a contemporaneous literary and philosophical discourse emerging in the Second Sophistic. This unique Latin novel follows a man who is accidentally turned into a donkey because of his curiosity, viewing the world through a donkey’s eyes until he is returned to human form by the Egyptian goddess Isis. In the end, he chooses to become a cult initiate and priest instead of a debased and overindulgent ass. On the one hand, the novel encourages readers to take pleasure in the narrator’s experiences, as he relishes food, sex, and forbidden forms of knowledge. Simultaneously, it challenges readers to reconsider their participation in the story by exposing its donkey-narrator as a failed model of heroism and philosophical investigation. Ulrich interprets the Metamorphoses as a locus of philosophical inquiry, positioning the act of reading as a choice of how much to invest in this tale of pleasurable transformation and unanticipated conversion. The Shadow of an Ass further explores how Apuleius, as a North African philosopher translating an originally Greek novel into a Latin idiolect, transforms himself into an intermediary of Platonic philosophy for his Carthaginian audience. Situating the novel in a long history of philosophical and literary conversations, Ulrich suggests that the Metamorphoses anticipates much of the philosophical burlesque we tend to associate with early modern fiction, from Don Quixote to Lewis Carroll.
Download or read book Old English Glossed Psalters Psalms 1 50 written by University of Toronto. Centre for Medieval Studies and published by University of Toronto Press. This book was released on 2001-01-01 with total page 810 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The first of three volumes, this book is an edition of forty psalters written or owned in Anglo-Saxon England, half of which are glossed in Old English. The work is an invaluable tool for comparative gloss scholarship, for the study of the influence of vocabulary, the interpretation of glosses, the study of relations among psalters, and the study of the Latin text of the psalms in Anglo-Saxon England. It also presents new insights on the development of centres of learning and the impact of the psalter on literary tradition. Each volume addresses a group of fifty psalms. This landmark in Old English studies is the first attempt at a completely comprehensive edition. As an original and much-needed contribution to early medieval scholarship, it not only provides a standard edition of texts based on all known Anglo-Saxon psalters but also synthesizes many studies of psalter scholarship from the earliest times.

Book excerpt: Being a hero would be a lot easier with an instruction manual. A hero’s work is never done! I’m the guild’s only reaper witch and it’s my job to save humanity. After a few hiccups, I rose to the challenge and expelled the demon king from Earth, however, Moloch’s time in exile allowed another demon prince to rise in ranks. Not good since this self-proclaimed Emperor of Inferis is planning an invasion. While I’ve managed to finally hone my magic and no longer suck at physical combat, there’s still much to do. Seducing two sexy reapers is at the top of that list, but I also need to pay a debt to a mysterious voice. Finding a body for the portal entity to inhabit might have to take a backburner, though, given everything else going on. The new demonic Emperor isn’t just looking to rule Earth, it’s got an interest in me, I just can’t figure out why. Perhaps it’s time to put down the training scythe, hit the books, and learn the origin of my power. The truth ends up being even worse than expected and I might have to do the unthinkable to save everyone I love. I only hope I don’t lose my soul in the process. *A dark urban fantasy featuring an older heroine, a love triangle and a destiny long in the making.
