Book Infants in Institutions Classic Reprint

Download or read book Infants in Institutions Classic Reprint written by Sally Provence and published by . This book was released on 2015-08-05 with total page 214 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Infants in Institutions One of the most definitive concepts of child development specifies that prolonged deprivation of maternal care affects adversely the personality development of children. Many studies in Britain and the United States during the past fifty years have produced evidence of various kinds to demonstrate the particular harm that may come to infants who are institutionalized, or whose care in other settings has similarly been defective in mothering, especially when this has been distinguished by discontinuity, insufficiency, or distortion. Bowlby's monograph on maternal care and mental health published by the World Health Organization in 1951 was not only an exhaustive review of world literature and a summary of his own studies, but included theories about the influence of maternal deprivation on the child's personality. Bowlby's indictment of nurseries and other institutions, particularly hospitals, had a widespread and dramatic influence on improving the care of children in institutions. Moreover, his work has stimulated in the past ten years much research aimed at clarifying the issues and providing new evidence in support of Bowlby's thesis or in contradiction of it. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The System of Infants Schools Such considerations seldom present them selves to the mind of the. Parent of a poor family. The great and almost the sole aim of the mother, to whom the, infancy of life is ne cessarily entrusted, is to keep the child out of the way of bodily injury, and to secure, by every means, immediate submission to her com mands. The authority which is thus preserved, is principally that of 'the passions. It oscillates between anger and indulgence: or, when neither the one nor the other of these may be employed, it leaves the infant uncontrolled, to adopt any mode of feeling or action, which the natural disposition may give life to, or circumstances suggest. When the parent is weary of the trouble which thus devolves upon her. She seeks relief, by sending her infant children to the re sidence of a dame, who is contented, for a small remuneration, to hold a contest with the passions of the young, and, by whatever means. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Infant Schools Their History and Theory Though the Infant School was established only recently, Since after all Time's dial-plate Marks cent'ries with the minute finger, its importance as an institution is now universally admitted. The history of its evolution ought, therefore, to interest all teachers, and the theory underlying its methods ought to interest all teachers of the young. For any one who undertakes the work of education, professional skill is essential, but this may happen to exist along with entire ignorance of both history and theory. Still, the art is most likely to be correct which is taught by history to avoid the mistakes of the past and by theory to conform to the laws of Nature. Book Baby Incubators

Download or read book Baby Incubators written by John Zahorsky and published by . This book was released on 2015-08-04 with total page 144 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Baby Incubators: A Clinical Study of the Premature Infant, With Especial Reference to Incubator Institutions Conducted for Show Purposes This little book grew out of a series of articles on my experience with premature infants reared in an institution which was conducted for show purposes at the Louisiana Purchase Exposition. The articles appeared in the St. Louis Courier of Medicine, 1905. While the study is based on institutional work the several questions discussed apply to premature infants anywhere. Whether some of the conclusions reached are perfectly sound only future experience can verify. As to the final outcome of the infants kept in the incubators on the "Pike," it need only be said that as far as I could learn only one infant died after leaving the institution. All others are doing well. Mildred, the smallest one of all, is a happy girl. (See frontispiece). Quite a number of errata occur through this book, all of which are so obvious that they need not be pointed out here. I take pleasure in thanking my friend, Dr. E. W. Saunders, for many practical suggestions in regard to the care of premature infants. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book Infant Mortality in New York City

Download or read book Infant Mortality in New York City written by Ernst Christopher Meyer and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-21 with total page 156 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Infant Mortality in New York City: A Study of the Results Accomplished by Infant-Life Saving Agencies, 1885-1920 The details upon which this report is based were collected in 1915 and 1916 for the immediate purposes of the International Health Board. Typewritten copies of the study were, however, made available to interested persons on request. Since then there has been a growing demand that the report be published. It was finally decided to do this after the Department of Health of New York City had given its ready consent. All important tables and graphs have been brought up to date. The text, however, as will be noted, deals with the material which was in hand when the study was closed in 1916. There have been no developments since that time in the field of infant care in New York City of such importance as to call for modification of the general conclusions arrived at in 1916. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Prisoners and Juvenile Delinquents in Institutions, 1904 Infants under 10 years of age were not counted among prisoners, because when they are found in penal institutions they are either neglected children awaiting transfer to other institutions or infants accompanying sentenced mothers. In short, while preceding censuses included as pris oners all persons kept behind prison bars, the present one was restricted to sane prisoners at least 10 years of age confined on a term or indefinite sentence in civil prisons and the juvenile delinquents committed to special institutions. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Infant School: Its Principles and Methods That there is need for a book dealing with the special problems of the Infant School, the writer is strongly convinced. There are two reasons which seem to require that an attempt should be made to deal with these problems at present. In the first place, the Infant School is dealt with in too summary a fashion in most books on School Method, and the importance of its work is by no means adequately represented. In the second place, the general plan on which most School Management text-books are based, that of the Curriculum or subjects of study, is not a plan suited to a discussion of Infant School Management. In the Infant School the central fact for the teacher is not the Curriculum but the Pupil. This, of course, is true of all schools, but its truth is most evident at the initial stages of education. Hence in this book an attempt has been made to discuss education from the central standpoint - the child to be educated. The writer is convinced that this is the only scientific basis for education, and that from this basis must be deduced alike the curriculum and the method. Apart from this basis, education becomes merely an empirical system of rules and traditions. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book Object Lessons for Infants Vol 1 Classic Reprint

Download or read book Object Lessons for Infants Vol 1 Classic Reprint written by Vincent T. Murché and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-02 with total page 198 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Object Lessons for Infants, Vol. 1 This course of Object Lessons for use in Infant Schools is designed as an easy stepping-stone to the author's more advanced course for use in the Senior departments; and is the natural outcome of the widely extended favour with which the two preceding series of books have been received in the educational world. In view of the recent changes in the Code, which have set up new relations between the school, h.m. Inspector, and the Education Department, and affect the everyday life of both teachers and scholars, it has been deemed advisable, after consultation with several Infant Teachers, to arrange the course in four stages. Under the old regime the Infant School seemed to naturally resolve itself into three divisions. It is now thought that, under the new conditions, a course of lessons laid down in four stages will be welcomed by most teachers, as giving them a stage at their discretion, to provide for the more rapid class promotions which will henceforth take place. Book Practical Infant Feeding Classic Reprint

Download or read book Practical Infant Feeding Classic Reprint written by Lewis Webb Hill and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-10-21 with total page 486 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Practical Infant Feeding Iibut rather to amalgamate the best points taught in this country and abroad into what I hope IS a homogeneous whole. It 1s desirable, of course, to make any subject as simple and as easily understandable as possible, and infant feeding need not be made complicated, but, on the other hand, any presenta tion which does not explain underlying processes and the basis of symptoms is not enough for the thinking practitioner of today. As I heard an eminent Philadelphia pediatrist say not long ago, there is at present a tendency to try to make infant feeding so easy for the physician that there is a chance of for getting whether or not the methods used may be suitable for the baby. The general standard of infant feeding in America has, however, improved greatly in the last ten years owing to the increased interest that general practitioners have taken in it, which is shown by the continually increasing numbers coming for instruction to the large post-graduate schools, such as the Harvard Graduate School of Medicine and the New York post-graduate School. To such men as this I respectfully offer this book, and sincerely hope that they may find it of value and interest. I wish especially to thank Dr. W. W. Howell for so kindly consenting to write the chapter on Premature Infants; Dr. R W. Lovett and other members of the staff for permitting me to use several pictures and Roentgen-ray plates taken from their cases in the Children's Hospital; Mr. J. V. Footman for kindly making the prints and taking many pictures, and the publishers for their many courtesies. Download or read book A Manual of Instruction for Infants Schools written by William Wilson and published by . This book was released on 2016-06-25 with total page 236 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Manual of Instruction for Infants' Schools: With an Engraved Sketch of the Area of an Infants' School Room and Play Ground, of the Abacus, of a Scheme of Instruction, and the Tables of Numbers The following Treatise is, as it professes to be, a Manual of Instruction for Infants' Schools. The reader, however, is requested to bear in mind, that a treatise of this character must involve many of the peculiarities which necessarily belong to an establishment, proposing to itself the instruction of infants, from the first dawn of reason, ' and that it does not contain a course of instruc tion, which the teacher may adopt without further anxiety of mind. Concerning the lessons which are placed before the reader in the following Manual, it is necessary to remark, that they are not to be regarded as forming distinct sub jects of instruction, but as, severally, integral parts of a system. The Manual contains, in separate systems, the mode of arranging an Infants' School; the mode of teach. Ing the Art of Reading; the mode of Teaching the Art of Arithmetic; the mode of Teaching the Art of Writing; and, in the last place, a course of Oral Instruction. The lessons may, perhaps, appear unimportant, when indivi dually considered; but if any one is omitted in its place and order, the omission will be found to have destroyed the unity of the system to which it belonged.
