Download or read book Infantry Training 4 Company Organization 1914 written by War Office and published by . This book was released on 2003-08 with total page 320 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The situation in Europe in 1914 was electric, and war was inevitable. In the UK the British Army went through its training in the safe knowledge that it had never suffered defeat in Europe. This manual contains all that was taught to infantrymen, section commanders and many junior officers before they were sent to France When it arrived in France the British Army was a well trained and quite well equipped force, capable with the support of its Allies of fighting the Germans to a standstill, which it did in the autumn of 1914. The reason the British Army was so good is shown in this manual, for an army trained to the standards given in this manualt had to be effective. The manual covers both the drill square movements, intended to create the camaraderie and esprit de corps for which the army was famous, and a detailed section on field operations, both attack and defence. Trenches are covered (in a small way), as are machine guns. Of particular interest are the sections covering machine guns in battle, and fighting in close country, woods and villages. The manual is well illustrated with 18 plates and there is a very helpful glossary of military terms.

Book excerpt: Excerpt from Organization, Training, and Mobilization of Volunteers Under the Act of April 25, 1914: Prepared by the War College Division, General Staff Corps as a Supplement to the Statement of a Proper Military Policy for the United States According to the recommendations of the War College Division of the General Staff, the first line should now consist Of half a million fully trained troops, composed of the Regular Army and the reserve, which has been trained by service in the Regular Army, supported by an additional force of fully half a million citizen sol diers, prepared to take the field immediately on the outbreak of war, who should have had sufficient previous military training to enable them to meet a trained enemy within three months. At the present time the Regular Army at home could perhaps be expanded to about men by the addition of a large proportion of recruits, and there would still be required for our first line about citizen soldiers. This combined force would be insufficiently trained. The existing Organized Militia, if expanded to war strength. This collection in no way represents an exhaustive record of the Army's months in France, but it is certainly worthy of serious consideration and thoughtful review by students of military history and strategy and will serve as a useful jumping off point for any earnest scholarship on the war. --from Foreword by William A Stofft.

Book MANUAL OF PHYSICAL TRAINING 1914 United States Army

This book was released on 2024-06-29 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This detailed guide from 1914 is dedicated to bringing the fighting forces of the US Army up to exacting physical fitness standards. The volume represents the major fitness themes of the early 20th century included guidance of barbells, pommel horse, Olympic bars and rings and much more. The manual is designed for use by training personnel and explains how to best create a training environment, deliver training and measure and monitor results. With the tensions and eventual war breaking out in 1914, the guide represents a trend for heightening of fitness standards for all western armies at the time. There are interesting and poignant prefaces from Major General, Chief of Staff Leonard Wood which set the scene for the Army's evolving demands. Watch out too for the unique sections on use of the rifle as a fitness tool for dexterity and calisthenics. Published just prior to the outbreak of World War 1, this beautifully illustrated guide was designed to revolutionise the combat fitness and readiness of the US Army covering a wide range of gymnastic and combat calisthenic exercises.
