Book excerpt: This collection of studies, first published in 1985, describes some contemporary problems of selected pastoral and agro-pastoral communities of the West African Sahel. Several important features of the Sahel are illustrated: the significance of seasonal factors in causing periodic stress amongst people and animals, the economic uncertainty introduced by interannual climactic variations, as well as the role of traditional systems of social and economic organisation in providing some support during periods of need. The findings presented here are published in co-operation with the Sahel Institute, a regional research organisation set up in the early 1970s with representation from eight Sahelian countries - Cape Verde, Chad, Gambia, Mali, Mauritania, Niger, Senegal and Upper Volta.

Book West African Sources of Health and Mortality Information

Download or read book West African Sources of Health and Mortality Information written by Allan G. Hill and published by . This book was released on 1988 with total page 78 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Population, Health and Development project of The International Development Research Centre's Social Sciences Dvision was created in 1983 as a temporary mechanism to support and to strengthen the capacity of developing country researchers in carrying out interdisciplinary investigations of the persistent problems of high levels of infant and child mortality and poor health. This review illustrates the potential utility of existing health data in four West African countries (Mali, Senegal, the Gambia, and Sierra Leone), data other than population surveys and censuses that can be used to complement and evaluate more standard sources of demographic data. The larger purpose of the document is to make researchers rethink and improve their use of existent data collected in African health institutions.

Book Child Migration in Africa

Download or read book Child Migration in Africa written by Iman Hashim and published by Bloomsbury Publishing. This book was released on 2011-02-10 with total page 287 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Child Migration in Africa explores the mobility of children without their parents within West Africa. Drawing on the experiences of children from rural Burkina Faso and Ghana, the book provides rich material on the circumstances of children's voluntary migration and their experiences of it. Their accounts challenge the normative ideals of what a 'good' childhood is, which often underlie public debates about children's migration, education and work in developing countries. The comparative study of Burkina Faso and Ghana highlights that social networks operate in ways that can be both enabling and constraining for young migrants, as can cultural views on age- and gender-appropriate behaviour. The book questions easily made assumptions regarding children's experiences when migrating independently of their parents and contributes to analytical and cross-cultural understandings of childhood. Part of the groundbreaking Africa Now series, Child Migration in Africa is an important and timely contribution to an under-researched area.

Book Anthropology of Breast Feeding

Download or read book Anthropology of Breast Feeding written by Vanessa Maher and published by Taylor & Francis. This book was released on 2024-11-01 with total page 163 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: On the whole, the debates surrounding the issues of breast-feeding - often reflecting ethnographic and ill-informed medical and demographic approaches - have failed to treat the deeper issues. The significance of breast-feeding reaches far beyond its biological function; in fact, the authors of this volume argue, there is nothing `natural' about breast-feeding itself. On the contrary, attitudes and practices are socially determined, and breast-feeding has to be seen as an essential element in the cultural construction of sexuality. This volume offers an `ethnography' of breast-feeding by examining cultural norms and practices in a number of European and non-European societies, thus presenting valuable and often astonishing empirical material that is not otherwise readily available. The highly original focus of this volume therefore throws new light on gender and on social relationships in general.
