Book Emerson and Self reliance

Download or read book Emerson and Self reliance written by George Kateb and published by Rowman & Littlefield. This book was released on 2002 with total page 278 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This reprint is distinguished by a new preface reconsidering Emerson's Nature, a work that goes undiscussed in the text proper (Kateb moves toward the notion that Emerson's divinization of humanity renders the balance with nature lost, "its mute appeal denied"). Nonetheless, Kateb (politics, Princeton U.) views Emerson as a radical for his commitment to individualism as an ideal suitable for democracy. Emerson calls it "self-reliance" and Kateb distinguishes between the mental and active kinds, suggesting Emerson elevates intellectual independence above independence of character and practical achievement. Nietzsche is held up as Emerson's best reader, Kateb aspiring to a reading of Emerson friendly to Nietzsche's interests. Annotation copyrighted by Book News, Inc., Portland, OR

Book Inexhaustibility and Human Being

Download or read book Inexhaustibility and Human Being written by Stephen David Ross and published by Fordham Univ Press. This book was released on 1989 with total page 358 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: At a time when the metaphysical tradition is being called profoundly into question by proponents of pragmatism and continental philosophy, Inexhaustibility and Human Being examines a specific aspect of metaphysics: the nature of being human, acknowledging the force of these critiques and discussing their ramifications. Exploring the possibility of a systematic metaphysics that acknowledges the limits of every thought, the book offers a metaphysics of human being based on locality and inexhaustibility. Its major focus is on a corresponding "anthropology" in which human being is both local and exhaustive - that is, based on limitation and on the limitation of limitation. Among the book's major topics are: being as locality and inexhaustibility; human being as judgment and perspective; knowing and reason as query; language and meaning as semasis; emotion; sociality; politics; life and death. Clearly written, and wide-ranging in scope, Inexhaustibility and Human Being covers a multitude of subjects - history, love, sexuality, consciousness, suffering, the body, instrumentality, government, and law - in the development of its thesis. The book will appeal not only to philosophers - but also to those involved in studying the various arenas of human activity Professor Ross examines.

Book Why Knowing What To Do Is Not Enough

Download or read book Why Knowing What To Do Is Not Enough written by Anne-Greet Keizer and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2019-01-01 with total page 157 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This open access book sets out to explain the reasons for the gap between "knowing" and "doing" in view of self-reliance, which is more and more often expected of citizens. In todays society, people are expected to take responsibility for their own lives and be self-reliant. This is no easy feat. They must be on constant high alert in areas of life such as health, work and personal finances and, if things threaten to go awry, take appropriate action without further ado. What does this mean for public policy? Policymakers tend to assume that the government only needs to provide people with clear information and that, once properly informed, they will automatically do the right thing. However, it is becoming increasingly obvious that things do not work like that. Even though people know perfectly well what they ought to do, they often behave differently. Why is this? This book sets out to explain the reasons for the gap between 'knowing and 'doing. It focuses on the role of non-cognitive capacities, such as setting goals, taking action, persevering and coping with setbacks, and shows how these capacities are undermined by adverse circumstances. By taking the latest psychological insights fully into account, this book presents a more realist perspective on self-reliance, and shows government officials how to design rules and institutions that allow for the natural limitations in peoples 'capacity to act.

Book Self Reliance and National Resilience

Download or read book Self Reliance and National Resilience written by K. Subramanyam and published by Abhinav Publications. This book was released on 2003-06 with total page 220 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: “Till recently dialogues and exchanges on strategic questions had unfortunately been an exclusive Western monopoly. The perceptions of our scholars, journalists and others tended to be influenced largely by the vast quantities of literature produced by Western strategic sources. Academicians from the non-aligned world very often met each other in conferences organized under Western auspices. There are very few fields in which our academic dependence has been as great as in the field of strategic studies. “This Seminar represents a significant departure from this pattern. It affords an opportunity for the two non-aligned friendly neighbours to get together to discuss our respective strategic perceptions, to establish direct contacts and communications between our institutions and scholars and to improve and reinforce our mutual understanding free from the distorting influence of foreign scholars. “Viewed in this perspective the significance of this seminar goes far beyond this immediate occasion. Indonesia has developed the concept of national resilience. In India we have a philosophy of self-reliance. Both these approaches require that on strategic and international security issues we should develop our own independent perceptions unfettered by the biased strategic doctrines of Western scholars. This was in fact to some extent the position in the first decade of non-alignment when both our countries rejected the concept of a rigid bipolar world though our perceptions at that stage were derived more from certain philosophical formulations rather than from a detailed analysis of strategic factors which affected our security. “Today it is obvious that such an approach is grossly inadequate. It is necessary for us to independently compile relevant factual data, analyse them critically and derive our own conclusions. It is on the basis of these independent conclusions that our own national strategies have to be formulated. Institutions like the Centre for Strategic and International Studies and the Institute for Defence Studies and Analyses play a very useful role in developing such national perceptions. Interactions between such institutions are bound to reflect in due course at national levels.”

Book Thinking the Inexhaustible

Download or read book Thinking the Inexhaustible written by Silvia Benso and published by State University of New York Press. This book was released on 2018-08-20 with total page 232 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Essays address the major themes of Pareyson’s hermeneutic philosophy in the context of his existentialist approach to personhood. What if the inexhaustible were the only mode of self-revelation of truth? The question of the inexhaustibility of truth, and its relation to being and interpretation, is the challenge posed by the philosophy of the prominent Italian thinker Luigi Pareyson (1918–1991). Art, the interpretation of truth, and the theory of being as the ontology of both inexhaustibility and freedom constitute the main themes of Pareyson’s distinctive form of philosophical hermeneutics, which develops also on the basis of another fundamental concept, that of personhood understood in the radically existentialist sense of the human being. In Thinking the Inexhaustible, Silvia Benso and Brian Schroeder bring together essays devoted to Pareyson’s hermeneutic philosophy by important international scholars, including well-known Italian thinkers Umberto Eco and Gianni Vattimo, who were both students of Pareyson. Pareyson’s philosophy of inexhaustibility unfolds in conversation with major figures in Western intellectual history—from Croce to Valéry, Dostoevsky, and Berdyaev; from Kant to Fichte, Hegel, and German romanticism; and from Pascal to Schelling, Kierkegaard, Marcel, Jaspers, and Heidegger. Silvia Benso is Professor of Philosophy at the Rochester Institute of Technology. Brian Schroeder is Professor of Philosophy at the Rochester Institute of Technology.
