Book An Examination of Turbulent Dissipation in the Marine Boundary Layer

Download or read book An Examination of Turbulent Dissipation in the Marine Boundary Layer written by George William Karch and published by . This book was released on 1976 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Shipboard measurements of temperature and velocity fluctuations were performed to determine optical propagation properties of the marine boundary layer. Empirical expressions describing the temperature structure parameter, C sub T2, in terms of the Richardson number, Ri, overland were used to evaluate data obtained for open ocean conditions. Profiles of the dissipation of turbulent kinetic energy, epsilon, with respect to height, Z, and with respect to a stability parameter, Z/L, were examined for open ocean conditions. In general, there was little correlation between the measured C sub T 2 and the stability parameter. However, the distribution of epsilon with height for both the stable and unstable cases showed little deviation from that expected for near neutral conditions.

Book Atmospheric Turbulence Measurements in Marine Fog During CEWCOM 76

Download or read book Atmospheric Turbulence Measurements in Marine Fog During CEWCOM 76 written by C. W. Fairall and published by . This book was released on 1977 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Atmospheric turbulence parameters epsilon (turbulent energy dissipation rate), and C sub T squared (temperature structure function) were measured in the marine boundary layer during the Cooperative Experiment for West Coast Oceanography and Meteorology (CEWCOM-76). The atmospheric stability was characterized by measurements of profiles of mean wind velocity, temperature and relative humidity. This paper will focus on turbulence properties and turbulent heat flux measured during four marine fog events. The fogs were characterized by a slightly unstable boundary layer with moderate increases of heat flux during the fog. An ensemble average of the fog events showed that C sub T squared and epsilon reached peak values immediately before and after the fog was encountered. An analysis of the dimensionless temperature structure function C sub T squared normalized by the square of the temperature gradient) gave lower values of temperature fluctuations in fog than in clear air.

Book Basics of Engineering Turbulence

Download or read book Basics of Engineering Turbulence written by David Ting and published by Academic Press. This book was released on 2016-02-23 with total page 258 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Basics of Engineering Turbulence introduces flow turbulence to engineers and engineering students who have a fluid dynamics background, but do not have advanced knowledge on the subject. It covers the basic characteristics of flow turbulence in terms of its many scales. The author uses a pedagogical approach to help readers better understand the fundamentals of turbulence scales, especially how they are derived through the order of magnitude analysis. This book is intended for those who have an interest in flowing fluids. It provides some background, though of limited scope, on everyday flow turbulence, especially in engineering applications. The book begins with the ‘basics’ of turbulence which is necessary for any reader being introduced to the subject, followed by several examples of turbulence in engineering applications. This overall approach gives readers all they need to grasp both the fundamentals of turbulence and its applications in practical instances. Focuses on the basics of turbulence for applications in engineering and industrial settings Provides an understanding of concepts that are often challenging, such as energy distribution among the turbulent structures, the effective diffusivity, and the theory behind turbulence scales Offers a user-friendly approach with clear-and-concise explanations and illustrations, as well as end-of-chapter problems

Book Spectral Estimates of Marine Turbulence Data

Download or read book Spectral Estimates of Marine Turbulence Data written by Allan Bruce Lund and published by . This book was released on 1975 with total page 62 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Velocity and temperature fluctuations from multi-level measurements in the marine boundary layer were examined to determine the validity of present formulations and prediction techniques. Spectral distributions were analyzed using an analog analyzer. In general, the height variations of the dissipation rate of turbulent kinetic energy, momentum flux, and the temperature structure parameter observed in this study agree with the overland expressions developed by Wyngaard. Most deviations from expected results were attributed to apparent anomalies in spectral results.

Book Aeroacoustics of Low Mach Number Flows

Download or read book Aeroacoustics of Low Mach Number Flows written by Stewart Glegg and published by Academic Press. This book was released on 2017-02-15 with total page 554 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Aeroacoustics of Low Mach Number Flows: Fundamentals, Analysis, and Measurement provides a comprehensive treatment of sound radiation from subsonic flow over moving surfaces, which is the most widespread cause of flow noise in engineering systems. This includes fan noise, rotor noise, wind turbine noise, boundary layer noise, and aircraft noise. Beginning with fluid dynamics, the fundamental equations of aeroacoustics are derived and the key methods of solution are explained, focusing both on the necessary mathematics and physics. Fundamentals of turbulence and turbulent flows, experimental methods and numerous applications are also covered. The book is an ideal source of information on aeroacoustics for researchers and graduate students in engineering, physics, or applied math, as well as for engineers working in this field. Supplementary material for this book is provided by the authors on the website www.aeroacoustics.net. The website provides educational content designed to help students and researchers in understanding some of the principles and applications of aeroacoustics, and includes example problems, data, sample codes, course plans and errata. The website is continuously being reviewed and added to. Explains the key theoretical tools of aeroacoustics, from Lighthill’s analogy to the Ffowcs Williams and Hawkings equation Provides detailed coverage of sound from lifting surfaces, boundary layers, rotating blades, ducted fans and more Presents the fundamentals of sound measurement and aeroacoustic wind tunnel testing

Book Turbulence in the Atmosphere

Download or read book Turbulence in the Atmosphere written by John C. Wyngaard and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2010-01-28 with total page 407 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Based on his over forty years of research and teaching, John C. Wyngaard's textbook is an excellent up-to-date introduction to turbulence in the atmosphere and in engineering flows for advanced students, and a reference work for researchers in the atmospheric sciences. Part I introduces the concepts and equations of turbulence. It includes a rigorous introduction to the principal types of numerical modeling of turbulent flows. Part II describes turbulence in the atmospheric boundary layer. Part III covers the foundations of the statistical representation of turbulence and includes illustrative examples of stochastic problems that can be solved analytically. The book treats atmospheric and engineering turbulence in a unified way, gives clear explanation of the fundamental concepts of modeling turbulence, and has an up-to-date treatment of turbulence in the atmospheric boundary layer. Student exercises are included at the ends of chapters, and worked solutions are available online for use by course instructors.

Book A Three Platform Experiment on Optical Turbulence in the Marine Boundary Layer

Download or read book A Three Platform Experiment on Optical Turbulence in the Marine Boundary Layer written by Richard Henry Paine and published by . This book was released on 1977 with total page 65 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An observational experiment was conducted in the marine boundary layer off the California coast involving optical turbulence measurements. The measurements were made from a ship, a tethered kite and two C-135 aircraft. Measured values of C(n) squared from the surface to levels above the marine inversion were related to the synoptic weather situation. C(n) squared values were observed to be maximum in the inversion. Near surface C(n) squared values, measured from two levels on the ship, exhibited expected diurnal changes. Overall, C(n) squared values measured optically (scintillation) and meteorologically (from C(T) squared measurements) compared satisfactorily. C(n) squared profiles estimated from surface observed values using a z to the -413 power assumed distribution appeared to define the mean measured profile.
