Book Dynamics of Gas Surface Interaction

Download or read book Dynamics of Gas Surface Interaction written by Giorgio Benedek and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 295 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In recent decades surface science has experienced a large growth in connection with the development of various experimental techniques which are able to characterize solid surfaces through the observation of the scattering of ions, electrons, photons or atoms. These methods of investigation, known under different labels such as LEED, AES, XPS, UPS, etc. have been extensively applied in describing the structure, morphology, and chemical and physical properties of crystal surfaces and interfaces of a large variety of materials of interest in solid-state physics, electronics, metallurgy, biophysics, and heterogeneous catalysis. Among these methods we wish to emphasize molecular beam scattering from solid surfaces. ~lolecular beam scattering has gone through a large development in the last ten years. In this decade a large number of laboratories have used this method to study various clean and adsorbate-covered surfaces. The technique is nonetheless quite old. It dates back to the beginning of the thirties, when Estermann and Stern performed the first atom diffraction experiment proving the wave nature of atoms. In the following years the entire subject of gas-surface interaction was considered a branch of rarefied gas dynamics and developed in connection with aerospace research. Attention was then given to the integral properties of gas-solid interactions (sticking and energy accomodation, mean momentum transfer) rather than to atom-surface scatter ing from well-characterized surfaces.

Book Many Body Phenomena At Surfaces

Download or read book Many Body Phenomena At Surfaces written by David Lengreth and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 2012-12-02 with total page 593 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Many-Body Phenomena at Surfaces contains the proceedings of a two-week 1983 Workshop on Many-Body Phenomena at Surfaces sponsored by the Institute for Theoretical Physics, University of California, Santa Barbara. This workshop covers the many-body phenomena and the many-particle aspects of structural phenomena. This text is organized into six parts encompassing 29 chapters, and begins with a description of the method generally used to calculate ground state properties, densities, equilibrium positions, adiabatic potential curves, and energies of surfaces with and without an adsorbate atom or molecule. It goes on to apply these methods to binding and the calculation of potential surfaces, followed by a more diffuse section on various spectroscopies. Topics here include the experiments that elucidate the dynamic phenomena and the theoretical description, which is of relevance to dynamics. The next section discusses the dynamic phenomena of the inelastic mechanisms important when atomic and molecular species impinge on a surface. The remaining sections describe some elementary reactions, catalysis, and magneto-catalytic phenomena. This book is directed toward all surface scientists, specifically physicists, chemists, theorists, and experimentalists.

Book Atomic Scale Dynamics at Surfaces

Download or read book Atomic Scale Dynamics at Surfaces written by Giorgio Benedek and published by Springer. This book was released on 2018-12-28 with total page 647 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Experimental advances in helium atom scattering spectroscopy over the last forty years have allowed the measurement of surface phonon dispersion curves of more than 200 different crystal surfaces and overlayers of insulators, semiconductors and metals. The first part of the book presents, at a tutorial level, the fundamental concepts and methods in surface lattice dynamics, and the theory of atom-surface interaction and inelastic scattering in their various approximations, up to the recent electron-phonon theory of helium atom scattering from conducting surfaces. The second part of the book, after introducing the experimentalist to He-atom spectrometers and the rich phenomenology of helium atom scattering from corrugated surfaces, illustrates the most significant experimental results on the surface phonon dispersion curves of various classes of insulators, semiconductors, metals, layered crystals, topological insulators, complex surfaces, adsorbates, ultra-thin films and clusters. The great potential of helium atom scattering for the study of atomic scale diffusion, THz surface collective excitations, including acoustic surface plasmons, and the future prospects of helium atom scattering are presented in the concluding chapters. The book will be valuable reading for all researchers and graduate students interested in dynamical processes at surfaces.

Book Interaction of Charged Particles with Solids and Surfaces

Download or read book Interaction of Charged Particles with Solids and Surfaces written by Alberto Gras-Martí and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 699 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Early in 1989, while most of us were gathered in the Mediterranean five-centuries-old city of Alacant, the idea of a school on stopping and particle penetration phenomena came to our minds. Later that year when discussing this plan with some of the participants in the 13th International Conference on Atomic Collisions in Solids in Aarhus, we were pleased to note that the proposal was warmly welcomed indeed by the community. An Advanced Study Institute on this or a related subject had not been organized in the last decade. Because of the progress made particularly in the interaction of high energy beams with matter, and the many applications which the general subject of the stopping of charged particles (ions and electrons) in matter enjoys, a Study Institute appeared a worthy enterprise. Even though several international conference series cover developments in these areas, they miss tutorial introductions to the field. The title chosen was Interaction of Charged Particles with Solids and Surfaces, and the objectives were stated as follows: "to cover theory and experiments, including selected applications and hot topics, of the stopping of charged particles (ions and electrons) in matter. The emphasis will be on outlining the areas where further effort is needed, and on specifying the basic needs in applications. Fundamental concepts will prevail over applications, and the character of the Institute as a school will be stressed. " The school was directed by Fernando Flores (Spain), Herbert M. Urbassek (Germany), Nestor R.

Book Desorption Induced by Electronic Transitions DIET I

Download or read book Desorption Induced by Electronic Transitions DIET I written by N. H. Tolk and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2013-03-08 with total page 278 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Workshop on Desorption Induced by Electronic Transitions (DIET) took place May 12-14, 1982, in Williamsburg, Virginia. The meeting brought together, for the first time, most of the leading workers in the fields of electron and photon stimulated desorption from surfaces, as well as many workers in related fields, including sputtering, gas-phase photodissociation and solid-state theory. The emphasis of the workshop was on the microscopic mechanism of stimu lated desorption. Many possible mechanisms have been proposed, and a few new ones emerged at the meeting. Though no consensus was reached, many views were espoused and criticized, frequently with considerable enthusiasm. The result was an appraisal of our current understanding of DIET, and a focus on the experimental and theoretical efforts most likely to lead to new insights. This volume is an attempt to record the information exchanged in this very successful workshop and, perhaps, convey some of the excitement of the field of DIET. The book is a collection of papers written by participants in the DIET workshop, including in addition a contribution from Dietrich Menzel, who was unable to attend. Thus, this book represents a complete statement of the state of the art of experimental and theoretical studies of DIET and related phenomena. More importantly, it addresses the interesting unsolved problems, and suggests strategies for unraveling them. We acknowledge the assistance given by the other members of the organizing committee, A. E. de Vries, R. Gomer, M. L. Knotek, D. Menzel and D. P.

Book Dynamical Processes and Ordering on Solid Surfaces

Download or read book Dynamical Processes and Ordering on Solid Surfaces written by A. Yoshimori and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 205 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume is the proceedings of the Seventh Taniguchi International Sympo sium on the Theory of Condensed Matter. The symposium was held for five days from September 10 to 14, 1984 at Kashikojima, Mie, Japan. Dynamical proces ses and ordering on solid surfaces are the subjects of the symposium. About twenty participants stayed together at Shima Kanko Hotel, the symposium site, during the period. The intense and productive discussion in the bright sea s ide atmosphere of Kashi koj ima is bel i eved to have been impress i ve to all the participants. Dynamical processes on solid surfaces are the target of recent theoreti cal efforts in surface physics. Even if some of them are still in their in fant stage, important aspects begin to appear and vital concepts start to shape themselves. Some topics in the symposium were the energy transfer re lated with internal degrees of freedom of molecules, attempts to go beyond the trajectory approximati on, charge transfer and energy transfer between particles and solid surfaces, and related fundamental problems like adiaba tic potentials and electronic structures. In particular, really actively di scussed was the time-dependent Newns-Anderson model wi thout and wi th the intraatomic Coulomb interaction and sometimes with the interaction to the surface plasmons or phonons. Surface effects on the optical processes were discussed with great interest, such as the ABC-related problems of exciton polaritons and rare gas adsorbates on metal surfaces.

Book Dynamics at Surfaces Understanding Energy Dissipation and Physicochemical Processes at the Atomic and Molecular Level

Download or read book Dynamics at Surfaces Understanding Energy Dissipation and Physicochemical Processes at the Atomic and Molecular Level written by Marco Sacchi and published by Frontiers Media SA. This book was released on 2024-04-26 with total page 120 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Energy release to solid interfaces following chemical reactions is ubiquitous in a vast range of phenomena. Energy dissipation and dynamical disorder (surface entropy), surface friction and molecular diffusion control the rates of heterogeneous catalytic reactions, the efficiency of novel technology, lubrication as well as materials growth including self-assembly and nano-structures. Yet we understand little about the underlying nature of these mechanisms. Fundamentally, energy dissipation including interactions with phonons and electron-hole pairs determines the lifetime of molecular vibrations and rotations as well as the decoherence rate of quantum states. These processes form a central point for many aspects in physical chemistry, are embedded in the mechanisms that control surface dynamical processes and are critical factors in catalysis. They are equally relevant for physicochemical processes in the Earth's atmosphere and astrochemistry occurring on cosmic dust grains.

Download or read book Scattering Two Volume Set written by E. R. Pike and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 2001-10-09 with total page 1831 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Scattering is the collision of two objects that results in a change of trajectory and energy. For example, in particle physics, such as electrons, photons, or neutrons are "scattered off" of a target specimen, resulting in a different energy and direction. In the field of electromagnetism, scattering is the random diffusion of electromagnetic radiation from air masses is an aid in the long-range sending of radio signals over geographic obstacles such as mountains. This type of scattering, applied to the field of acoustics, is the spreading of sound in many directions due to irregularities in the transmission medium. Volume I of Scattering will be devoted to basic theoretical ideas, approximation methods, numerical techniques and mathematical modeling. Volume II will be concerned with basic experimental techniques, technological practices, and comparisons with relevant theoretical work including seismology, medical applications, meteorological phenomena and astronomy. This reference will be used by researchers and graduate students in physics, applied physics, biophysics, chemical physics, medical physics, acoustics, geosciences, optics, mathematics, and engineering. This is the first encyclopedic-range work on the topic of scattering theory in quantum mechanics, elastodynamics, acoustics, and electromagnetics. It serves as a comprehensive interdisciplinary presentation of scattering and inverse scattering theory and applications in a wide range of scientific fields, with an emphasis, and details, up-to-date developments.
