Book Inelastic Axisymmetric Buckling of Ring Stiffened Cylindrical Shells Under External Pressure

Download or read book Inelastic Axisymmetric Buckling of Ring Stiffened Cylindrical Shells Under External Pressure written by Lawrence H. N. Lee and published by . This book was released on 1969 with total page 99 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The effects of prebuckling deformation caused by the ring constraints on the inelastic stability of ring stiffened cylindrical shells under external-pressure and deformed axi-symmetrically are studied. By Drucker's postulate of positive work in plastic deformation, a modified incremental theory of plasticity on the stress-strain relationships expressed in terms of Kirchhoff stress and Green strain rates is developed. Furthermore, a variational principle in Lagrangian descriptions and for quasi-static problems of finite plasticity is developed and employed to solve the problem. (Author).

Book Plastic Axisymmetric Buckling of Ring stiffened Cylindrical Shells Fabricated from Strain hardening Materials and Subjected to External Hydrostatic Pressure

Download or read book Plastic Axisymmetric Buckling of Ring stiffened Cylindrical Shells Fabricated from Strain hardening Materials and Subjected to External Hydrostatic Pressure written by Myron Edwin Lunchick and published by . This book was released on 1961 with total page 64 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A cylindrical shell stiffened by uniformly spaced transverse rings and subjected to external hydrostatic pressure is analyzed for plastic buckling in the axisymmetric mode. In this analysis strain-hardening of the material is accounted for and Poisson's ratio is treated asA VARIABLE WHICH VARIES FROM ITS VALUE IN THE ELASTIC STATE TO AN UPPER LIMIT OF 1/2 FOR INCOMPRESSIBLE MATERIAL. The differential equation for the plastic range is derived for axisymmetric buckling. Expressions for the plastic axisymmetric buckling pressures are obtained. A criterion of length of shell for long and short cylinders is presented, below which the shell can buckle in only one half wave. As a special case of the problem considered, a solution for the plastic buckling of a long cylinder under end compression is obtained. This solution degenerates to that previously obtained by Gerard for a Poisson's ratio of 1/2 but represents a more rigorous solution in terms of variable Poisson's ratios. Limited experimental evidence is presented in support of the theory. (Author).

Book Elastic lobar buckling of ring supported cylindrical shells under hydrostatic pressure

Download or read book Elastic lobar buckling of ring supported cylindrical shells under hydrostatic pressure written by Thomas E. Reynolds and published by . This book was released on 1962 with total page 120 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A small-deflection analysis is developed for the elastic interbay buckling of ring-stiffened cylindrical shells in which the influence of the rings on deformations before an during budkling is considered. Tests were carried out with a machined, ring-stiffened cylinder (BR-4B) subjected to external hydrostatic pressure Collapse was initiated by elastic asymmetric buckling of the shell. Strain easurements taken during the test demonstrated that the South ell method of determining buckling strength nondestructively is applicable in the case of interbay buckling. The results of this and three other tests of machined cylinders are in good agreement with the theory. While the Von Mises theory is inaccurate for closely spaced rings, its continued application for estimating elastic buckling strength is probably justified since it is always conservative and can be represented in a simple form.

Book General Elastic Plastic Instability of Ring Stiffened Cylindrical Shells Under External Pressure

Download or read book General Elastic Plastic Instability of Ring Stiffened Cylindrical Shells Under External Pressure written by Lawrence H. N. Lee and published by . This book was released on 1973 with total page 74 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A variational principle and associated criteria on bifurcation and stability of elastic-plastic solids, which are expressed in terms of Lagrangian variables, are described. The principle is employed to study the effects of prebuckling deformation and yield surface corners on the inelastic asymmetric buckling of a ring-stiffened cylindrical shell under external pressure. The shell is made of a work hardening material having incremental type constitutive relationships associated with either Mises's yield surface or a yield surface with corners. An incremental Rayleigh-Ritz numerical method is employed to determine the non-linear deformation process and asymmetric bifurcation pressure. Numerical results are obtained and compared with available experimental results. (Author).

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The object of this book is to clarify the whole aspect of the basic problems concerning the elastic stability of of circular cylindrical shells under typical loading conditions. The book deals with buckling, postbuckling and initial postbuckling problems under one of the three fundamental loads, that is, torsion, pressure and compression. The emphases are placed on the accurate analysis and comprehensive numeral results for the buckling problem, experimental verification of the theoretical analysis for the postbuckling problem and clarification of the range of applicability of the perturbation method for the analysis of initial postbuckling behaviors and imperfection sensitivity. The problems under typical combined loads as well as the influence of the contained liquid are also clarified.

Book Buckling of Structures

Book excerpt: This collection of papers, written by friends and colleagues of Josef Singer, presents a comprehensive and timely review of the theoretical mechanics of thin shell-structures. Topics of great current interest such as the buckling of composite plates and shells, the plastic buckling of thin-walled structures and the optimum design of buckling sensitive curved composite panels are examined by experts, using a great diversity of approaches, whereby theoretical predictions are compared with experimental results whenever possible.Other topics reviewed include the buckling and post-buckling behaviour of imperfect shells under different external static or dynamic loads and a variety of boundary conditions. Papers dealing with the vibration and the dynamic response of thin elastic bodies are also presented.A strong emphasis is made on the practical applications aspect in the theories presented. Thus engineers, research workers and students who are involved with the design and analysis of shell structures made of different materials, and subjected to various static and dynamic loads will find this volume an invaluable source of reference.

This book is comprised of 11 chapters that explore the main problems of structural analysis related to the design of metal pressure vessels and components. After introducing the reader to the basic principles of stress analysis, it turns to nozzles in pressure vessels. The shakedown analysis of radial nozzles in spheres is described for pressure, thrust, moment, shear, and combined loading. The problem of pressure vessel ends is treated next, along with local loads applied to pressure vessel shells at nozzles and local attachments such as support points. An analysis of pressure vessels using a computer is also presented. The final chapter describes the analysis of ligament stresses in pressure vessels and includes a discussion on arrays of holes with reinforcement. This volume will be of value to nuclear and structural engineers as well as designers and research workers in the nuclear industry.

Book Inelastic Buckling Tests of Ring stiffened Cylinders Under Hydrostatic Pressure

Download or read book Inelastic Buckling Tests of Ring stiffened Cylinders Under Hydrostatic Pressure written by Lance Boichot and published by . This book was released on 1965 with total page 33 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A series of small machined aluminum models were collapsed under external hydrostatic pressure to study the inelastic buckling of near-perfect ring-stiffened cylinders made of strain-hardening materials. The predominant modes of failure were general instability and axisymmetric shell buckling. Comparisons of test results with the analyses of Lunchick, Krenzke, and Kiernan show promising correlation but additional data would be needed for a complete evaluation. High bending stresses near frames did not noticeably affect axisymmetric shell buckling strength. The presence of frame fillets, however, caused a significant increase in general instability strength although bending stresses in the absence of fillets were relatively low.
