Book The German Tradition of Organized Capitalism

Download or read book The German Tradition of Organized Capitalism written by Martin F. Parnell and published by . This book was released on 1994 with total page 288 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Dr Parnell provides a two-level analysis of the politics of government-industry relations in Germany. On the one hand, he presents an in-depth examination of the politics of the German coal industry. On the other, he offers a more general account of the characteristic relationship between state and industry in one of the most successful post-war economies. He argues that the crucial concept in understanding those relations is Selbstverwaltung (self-government). This notion, despite evolving over time, displays a continuity in its key features that serves to elucidate the unique position of the state in government-industry relations in Germany. The author argues that by shedding further light on existing theories of organized capitalism and corporatism, the notion of self-government can provide a basis for the analysis of broader socio-economic relations within the German-speaking world, and, in particular, the German economy's continued success.

Book The Impact of UNESCO on States Cultural Policies

Download or read book The Impact of UNESCO on States Cultural Policies written by Alexandre Couture Gagnon and published by Taylor & Francis. This book was released on 2024-08-01 with total page 147 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Impact of UNESCO on States' Cultural Policies focuses on the impact of the 2005 Convention on Diversity of Cultural Expressions on the cultural policies of eight states and substates, examining how they have integrated it into their own cultural policy. Cultural diversity presents a challenge for all governments. As migration increases and technology makes access to worldwide cultural products easier, governments seek to maintain a vibrant culture within their states or substates so that their populations can keep a strong sense of identity. Cultural policies become key to balance cultural diversity and national identity, or to promote them in parallel. The book addresses three main themes: how governments deal with cultural diversity, especially in their cultural policies; what the impact of an international convention on individual states’ policies is; and how different states’ status (i.e. size) on the international scene affects their implementation of an international convention. Providing a systematic comparative analysis, this book will be of great interest to students and scholars of public policy, cultural policy and international organizations. It will also be useful to policymakers involved in cultural policy.

Book National Innovation Systems

Download or read book National Innovation Systems written by Richard R. Nelson and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 1993-06-03 with total page 560 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The slowdown of growth in Western industrialized nations in the last twenty years, along with the rise of Japan as a major economic and technological power (and enhanced technical sophistication of Taiwan, Korea, and other NICs) has led to what the authors believe to be a "techno-nationalism." This combines a strong belief that technological capabilities of a nation;s firms are a key source of their competitive process, with a belief that these capabilities are in a sense national, and can be built by national action. This book is about these national systems of technical innovation. The heart of the work contains studies of seventeen countries--from large market-oriented industrialized ones to several smaller high income ones, including a number of newly industrialized states as well. Clearly written, this work highlights institutions and mechanisms which support technical innovation, showing similarities, differences, and their sources across nations, making this work accessible to students as well as the scholars of innovation.
