Book excerpt: The first complete account of the rise and fall of the rubber economy in Brazil provides a dramatic example of one of the boom and bust cycles traditionally associated with Brazilian economic history. The Amazon rubber trade was one of the most important export booms in the history of Latin America, dominating the economic life of the Amazon for 70 years until the successful cultivation of rubber trees by the British in Southeast Asia. Yet this long period of vigorous economic activity left the basic structure of Amazonian society relatively unchanged. One of the author's main concerns is to explore why rubber exports did not generate substantial growth in either the industrial or the agricultural sector, and she finds the answers primarily in the relations of production and exchange that characterized the Amazon's extractive economy. The study also considers the impact of political decentralization and regionalism on the Amazonian economy, draws comparisons with the coffee boom in Sao Paulo that induced sustained industrial growth in that area, and traces the consequences of the rubber economy's collapse on the social, political, and economic life in the Amazon.

From a slowly evolving base of extraction in the estuary areas, the industry has expanded along an extensive road network straddling upland forests. This research examines the changes in the economic profile of timber extraction and processing in an old frontier area of Brazil, the county of Paragominas in the Eastern Amazonian state of Para. As one of the earliest centres of upland logging in the Amazon, its experience after twenty years offers insights to the development of the industry as it spreads to other regions of the basin. This paper presents a theoretical model of industry evolution in frontier areas and analyzes industry response in Paragominas to local shortages in raw material, rising international wood prices and increasingly stable property rights.

Book excerpt: Over the past decade, the Brazilian government has actively promoted oil palm in the Amazon biome as an alternative biodiesel feedstock to soy. Because of oil palms comparatively high productivity, it places less demand on land than soy and could thereby contribute to reducing pressure on the Amazonian forest. Although oil palm has long been a leading driver of deforestation and social conflict in major producer countries in Southeast Asia, the Brazilian government has put in place a number of mechanisms to ensure oil palm is cultivated sustainably and the sector is inclusive of the rural poor. Through research conducted in Brazils leading palm oil producing state of Pará, this paper analyzes the evolution and dynamics of the Brazilian palm oil value chain and the economic, environmental and social challenges faced by the sector. In so doing, it shows that under the right institutional and regulatory conditions, the palm oil sector can expand sustainably and inclusively within forested ecosystems. This though translates into considerably higher production costs for producers, thus undermining the international competitiveness of the Brazilian palm oil sector.

One of two books Woodroffe wrote on the Amazon, "The Rubber Industry of the Amazon" is an in-depth exploration of the culture, commerce, and capitalization of the resources and people along the mighty Amazon river. The second longest river in the world at 4,345 miles, the Amazon has long been a paragon of mystery, housing some of the world's most valuable resources and the most reclusive native people. An international rubber 'boom' in the 1800s exposed this region to the undue influence of European and Asian investors, culture, and disease, resulting in major changes within the region.
