Book Industry History Of Forest Of Dean

Download or read book Industry History Of Forest Of Dean written by Alta Oines and published by . This book was released on 2021-07-02 with total page 82 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A stranger to Dean could hardly suspect that less than a century ago the Forest was a center of industry. Mining, quarrying, smelting, iron, tinplate, engineering, and other works thrived, but within boundaries so quartered by hill and woodland, that solitude was never far away. Of this, but little remains. Business of a different kind has grown, and the old sites have in great measure been swept clear, regardless of anything noble or worthy of remark that might stand amid the general ruin. Perhaps, in answer to the worst of the Industrial Revolution, such a reaction was inevitable.

Book The Forest of Dean An Historical and Descriptive Account

Download or read book The Forest of Dean An Historical and Descriptive Account written by H. G. Nicholls and published by DigiCat. This book was released on 2022-09-15 with total page 177 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: As one can guess from the title, this book revolves around the region called Forest of Dean, which is a geographical, historical and cultural region in the western part of the county of Gloucestershire, England. It forms a roughly triangular plateau bounded by the River Wye to the west and northwest, Herefordshire to the north, the River Severn to the south, and the City of Gloucester to the east. The area is characterized by more than 110 square kilometers (42 sq mi) of mixed woodland, one of the surviving ancient woodlands in England. A large area was reserved for royal hunting before 1066, and remained as the second largest crown forest in England, after the New Forest. Although the name is used loosely to refer to the part of Gloucestershire between the Severn and Wye, the Forest of Dean proper has covered a much smaller area since the Middle Ages. In 1327, it was defined to cover only the royal demesne and parts of parishes within the hundred of St Briavels, and after 1668 comprised the royal demesne only. The Forest proper is within the civil parishes of West Dean, Lydbrook, Cinderford, Ruspidge, and Drybrook, together with a strip of land in the parish of English Bicknor.

Download or read book The Iron Industry written by Richard Hayman and published by Bloomsbury Publishing. This book was released on 2016-02-25 with total page 66 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The iron industry was the catalyst for the Industrial Revolution, producing a vital source of iron without which none of the great engineering achievements of the Victorian age would have been possible. This book charts the growth of iron making from the Middle Ages, covering the importation of blast-furnace methods in the fifteenth century, the adoption of coke as a fuel in the eighteenth century, and the invention of mass-produced steel in the nineteenth century. The developing techniques of iron making, all explained in a non-technical style, make a story in their own right, but combined with the experiences of the masters and workmen who laboured at the furnaces and forges, this volume offers a truly comprehensive account of one of the most important industries of recent centuries.

Download or read book Parish and Belonging written by K. D. M. Snell and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2006-11-16 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: What role did the parish play in people's lives in England and Wales between 1700 and the mid-twentieth century? By comparison with globalisation and its dislocating effects, the book stresses how important parochial belonging once was. Professor Snell discusses themes such as settlement law and practice, marriage patterns, cultures of local xenophobia, the continuance of out-door relief in people's own parishes under the new poor law, the many new parishes of the period and their effects upon people's local attachments. The book highlights the continuing vitality of the parish as a unit in people's lives, and the administration associated with it. It employs a variety of historical methods, and makes important contributions to the history of welfare, community identity and belonging. It is highly relevant to the modern themes of globalisation, de-localisation, and the decline of community, helping to set such changes and their consequences into local historical perspective.
