This book was released on 2012-01-05 with total page 291 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: South Korea has attained spectacular economic success in recent decades. It has reached the status of a Newly Advanced Economy, with challenges increasingly mirroring those faced by other advanced economies. These include the necessary upgrading of the labor force, the frictions of switching to a national system of innovation adapted to leadership in R&D, market-based economic policies that reflect the government’s difficulties in foreseeing future technological developments, and the consequences of social change for the innovation system and policy-making. In the forthcoming book the parallel challenges for innovation and technology for the Republic of Korea and other advanced economies will be analyzed more thoroughly with an international perspective in mind. This comparison and international benchmarking will allow policy makers and scholars to better appreciate how much the country has already moved into the circle of globally leading economies and what can be done to consolidate and strengthen its position.

Book Industrial Development in Singapore Taiwan and South Korea

Download or read book Industrial Development in Singapore Taiwan and South Korea written by Kai-Sun Kwong and published by World Scientific. This book was released on 2001 with total page 287 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Economic analysis of the industrial experiences of the newly industrialized economies in Asia is generally lacking in the literature. This study attempts to fill that void by providing an in-depth discussion on the economic impact of the industrial policies of Singapore, Taiwan, and South Korea in the three-and-a-half decades after 1960. Throughout the study, a broad perspective of macroeconomic development is maintained. It is highly critical of the narrow-minded objective of certain governments in maximizing the pace of industrialization at the expense of general economic well-being. A comparative analysis of the industrial experiences of the three economies also shows a diversity of constraints and processes. Singapore relied on multinational corporations, Taiwan on returned engineers, and South Korea on chaebols. There appears to be no Asian formula for industrialization. In Hong Kong, there is an ongoing debate on whether some form of industrial policy should be introduced, in view of the perception that Hong Kong is lagging behind the other economies in terms of technology. Drawing on the experiences of the other economies, the concluding chapter of the book provides an informed and balanced answer to this question. Contents: Singapore: Dominance of Multinational Corporations; Taiwan: Thriving High-Technology Industries and SME; South Korea: Government-Led Development and the Dominance of Giant Corporations; Comparison Among Singapore, Taiwan, and South Korea; Strategic Considerations in the Hong Kong Context. Readership: Researchers, policy-makers and undergraduates in economics and East Asian Studies.

Book Digital Development in Korea

Download or read book Digital Development in Korea written by Myung Oh and published by Taylor & Francis. This book was released on 2011-03-14 with total page 273 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book explores the role of digital information and communications technology in South Korea’s development, starting with and building upon the crucial developments of the 1980s. Its perspective draws on the information society concept and on a conceptual model of strategic restructuring of telecommunications. It also draws on firsthand experience in formulating and implementing policies. The analysis identifies aspects of the Korean experience from which developing countries around the world might benefit. Oh and Larson describe the revolutionary developments of the 1980s including the TDX electronic switching system, a major surge forward in semiconductors, the start of privatization and color television and the thoroughgoing restructuring of Korea’s telecommunications sector. They further explore government leadership, the growing private sector and international trade pressures in the diffusion of broadband, mobile communication, and convergence toward a ubiquitous network society. The role of education in these developments is explored in detail, along with both the positive and negative aspects of Korea’s vibrant new digital media. The book also looks at Korea’s growing international involvement, its role in efforts to build a world information society, and finally, its future place in cyberspace. This book will be of interest to students, scholars and policy makers interested in communications technologies, Asian/Korean Studies and development studies.
