Book excerpt: William Z. Foster, one of the earliest speakers and organizers with I.W.W. He was a leader of the Communist Party in America and writes from a first-hand knowledge of the role Industrial Unionism plays in our lives for workers rights. All forces of labor throughout the trade union movement should be united to reject the suspension order and preserve the unity and progress of the trade union movement. No man living today can speak with more authority on the industrial union question than Foster. He was a pioneer in the fight for the industrial form of organization since 1900. In the CarmenÕs Union in Chicago, among the packing-house workers and as leader of the Great 1919 Steel Strike and hundreds of labor struggles throughout the country during his years of courageous and militant organizing, Foster was always the leader in the industrial union fight. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Studies in American Trade Unionism But much more than the lessening interest of other prob lems, it has, Of course, been the increasing intrinsic im portance of the labor question that really explains the present. Popular absorption in the subject. The marvellous indus trial expansion of the United States in the past decade has been accompanied by a notable change in the quality Of the productive factors. Labor, as an industrial agent, no. Less than capital, has become almost a new thing under an Old name. The familiar problems of the labor world have taken on a more intense phase, and a whole array of new questions challenge attention. Of these labor problems, trade unionism is far and away the most important. Broadly understood, American trade unionism is the Merican labor problem; and, in a narrow acceptation, trade-union policy and practice impinge at some point or other upon such specific social problems as immigration, child-labor, employers' liability, and methods Of industrial remuneration. Book The Amalgamated Wood Workers International Union of America

Download or read book The Amalgamated Wood Workers International Union of America written by Frederick Shipp Deibler and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-10-17 with total page 216 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Amalgamated Wood Workers' International Union of America: A Historical Study of Trade Unionism in Its Relation to the Development of an Industry This thesis proceeds upon the idea that an intensive study of the origin and development of an individual union will reveal to the best advantage the principles of unionism, and the work ings of organized labor. Unionism is regarded as a social phe nomenon which requires for a clear understanding of its social importance, the same sort of treatment that has been given to other social institutions. The economist, in his study of'society, should lay bare the institutions of society and show their social significance in much the same way in which the surgeon lays bare the organs of the human body in order to understand their functions. By applying this method of investigation to this sub jcet, there appear two points of View from which to consider the union. In the first place, the union may be regarded as a social institution, having very definite relations to other institutions of society, as for example, the relation of the union to the state, or, in a mere restricted sense, the relation of one union to an other. Secondly, the structure of the organization may be stud ied, that is, its legislative, financial, and judicial systems, - also its industrial policy and the relation of this policy to the indus try itself. These are questions with which an analytical study of a union will concern itself, and which, it is believed, will throw light upon the larger problems of organized labor. Book Workers in Industrial America

Download or read book Workers in Industrial America written by David Brody and published by Oxford University Press, USA. This book was released on 1993 with total page 298 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This famous book, representing some of the finest thinking and writing about the history of American labor in the twentieth century, is now revised to incorporate two important recent essays, one surveying the historical study of the CIO from its founding to its fiftieth anniversary in 1985, another placing in historical and comparative perspective the declining fortunes of the labor movement from 1980 to the present. As always, Brody confronts central questions, both substantive and historiographical, focusing primarily on the efforts of laboring people to assert some control overtheir working lives, and on the equal determination of American business to conserve the prerogatives of management. Long a classic in the field of American labor history, valued by general readers and specialists alike for its brilliance of argument and clarity of style, Workers in IndustrialAmerica is now more timely than ever.

Book The Closed Shop in American Trade Unions Classic Reprint

Download or read book The Closed Shop in American Trade Unions Classic Reprint written by Frank T. Stockton and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-02-15 with total page 192 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Closed Shop in American Trade Unions The primary aim of the present study is to set forth the facts concerning the closed shop. It is proposed, first, to trace the manner in which the closed-shop rule developed among the early trade societies in America, and to disclose the motives which led to its incorporation into trade-union policy. Secondly, the history of the closed-shop movement will be set forth. The relative importance attached to the enforcement of the closed shop at various stages in our industrial development and the efforts which employers have made to check its operation will be shown. Next, the forms of the closed shop as they exist in various unions will be described. This analysis will make clear what the closed shop is and how far exclusion from employment is involved in its working. The manner in which the closed shop is established and the methods by which it is enforced will then engage our attention. When the closed shop has thus been described in detail, it will be possible in succeeding chapters to study its value as a trade-union device and its economic import.
