Book excerpt: Seminar paper from the year 2011 in the subject Leadership and Human Resources - Miscellaneous, grade: B, Prifysgol Cymru University of Wales, language: English, abstract: In the following case study we would be looking at a manufacturing company, “Flambo Plast GmbH” (FPG) specializing in the fields of plastic packaging, catering largely to the food industry. It is a family run business, involved in manufacturing three types of products viz., beverage packaging, food packaging and cutlery. It has an enlisted record of 500 employees. It was enjoying a good stand since its inception, but the growing competition in the field in the recent years, have pushed the management to rethink newer possibilities. The general threat is mostly experienced from the cheap product options flooding the German market. The management is run single-handedly by one owner. Lack of specialization amidst the employees is baffling and disappointing the management. Key Concern Areas The condition in the manufacturing unit is not proving to contribute to organizational growth. · Large number of temporary workers, leading to higher churn, lack of skills. · High rate of sick leave application, burdening productivity of the firm. · Lack of employee motivation, owing to mismatched skills, low managerial control. · Employees are supervised by three administrative managers dealing with three individual product lines. This causes conflict in direction and reduced clarity on product line, requiring different set of focus and skills. Lack of customer feedback has reduced the customer connect. · With global markets garnering momentum, it is imperative to understand cost competitiveness, product competitiveness, differentiating products to market. Thus it is quite apparent that the management will have to consider a total organizational restructuring along with a thorough redesigning of the functioning of the human resource segment (read more).

Book Responsible Restructuring

Download or read book Responsible Restructuring written by Wayne F Cascio and published by Berrett-Koehler Publishers. This book was released on 2002-10-02 with total page 146 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Firms that restructure through downsizing are not more profitable than those that don't, and often end up hurting themselves in the long run. Responsible Restructuring draws on the results of an eighteen-year study of S&P 500 firms to prove that it makes good business sense to restructure responsibly-to avoid downsizing and instead regard employees as assets to be developed rather than costs to be cut. Wayne Cascio explodes thirteen common myths about downsizing, detailing its negative impact on profitability, productivity, quality, and on the morale, commitment, and even health of survivors. He uses real-life examples to illustrate successful approaches to responsible restructuring used by companies such as Charles Schwab, Compaq, Cisco, Motorola, Reflexite, and Southwest Airlines. And he offers specific, step-by-step advice on what to do-and what not to do-when developing and implementing a restructuring strategy that, unlike layoffs, leaves the organization stronger and better able to face the challenges ahead.

Book New Wave Manufacturing Strategies

Download or read book New Wave Manufacturing Strategies written by John Storey and published by SAGE. This book was released on 1994-02-28 with total page 270 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Over the past decade, many companies have adopted new strategies for manufacturing, which have taken their competitiveness on to new planes. A whole array of initiatives, such as FMS, JIT, TQM, CIM, and MRP II, have been introduced. This book deals with the far-reaching significance of these new approaches - collectively labelled "new wave manufacturing". Considerable research evidence as well as practitioners′ own experiences make one crucial point time and time again. The organizational as well as the human resource management aspects of these new strategies are critical to their success or failure. The underlying theme which is tackled in this book, therefore, is to what extent do these new operational strategies require a matching set of organizational and HR strategies? By looking at the issues through the joint eyes of production and behavioural analysts, this book provides an unique introduction to the new developments in manufacturing as well as providing an up-to-date assessment of the organizational and H R dimensions to these methods. New Wave Manufacturing Strategies has a vision which goes beyond the "new technology"/advanced manufacturing technology discussions. The chapters have been written in a clear, accessible manner by leading experts from Europe, the USA and Australia as well as from the UK.

Book excerpt: Bill Dunn considers and contests accounts of globalization and post-Fordism that see structural economic change in the late Twentieth-century as having fundamentally worsened the conditions and weakened the potential of labour.
