Book Industrial Heritage in Denmark

Download or read book Industrial Heritage in Denmark written by Caspar Jorgensen and published by Aarhus Universitetsforlag. This book was released on 2013-12-28 with total page 285 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Since the middle of the 1800s, Denmark has increasingly taken the form of an industrial society, also in the sense that the industry's physical environments have been a growing part of the cultural landscape - and the development is still going on. Especially the massive building developments, which can be observed alongside the motorways, are a clear manifestation that industry - although having moved out of the old neighborhoods in the major cities from the 1950s, if not before - still dominates the landscape. The focal point of this book is the industrial environment, as understood through the objects, buildings and landscapes that came with industrial production, as well as its relationship to the natural conditions and the associated methods of production and lifestyles, organizations, assessments and knowledge. Emphasis will be placed on the physical environment, although research has also been carried out on work culture and business history.

Book excerpt: In presenting 25 industrial sites of national significance in the context of changing techno-economic paradigms, this book considers the development of Danish industrial landscapes and built-up environments in the period 1840-1970. Three case studies of ports, sugar mills, and cement plants are also presented. The book concludes with two chapters that discuss perceptions and strategies for the conversion of industrial sites, and an overview is given covering the preservation of industrial heritage in Denmark, historically. "Although Denmark is often perceived as an agricultural country, industry is a very important sector in the Danish economy, employing a large number of people and having considerable influence on Danish society and culture in general. The appreciation of industrial history, as well as the tangible and intangible remains of industry, is an important heritage." Anne Mette Rahbæk General Director of the Danish Agency of Culture

Book Routledge Research Companion to Landscape Architecture

Download or read book Routledge Research Companion to Landscape Architecture written by Ellen Braae and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2018-11-09 with total page 322 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Routledge Research Companion to Landscape Architecture considers landscape architecture’s increasingly important cultural, aesthetic, and ecological role. The volume reflects topical concerns in theoretical, historical, philosophical, and practice-related research in landscape architecture – research that reflects our relationship with what has traditionally been called ‘nature’. It does so at a time when questions about the use of global resources and understanding the links between human and non-human worlds are more crucial than ever. The twenty-five chapters of this edited collection bring together significant positions in current landscape architecture research under five broad themes – History, Sites and Heritage, City and Nature, Ethics and Sustainability, Knowledge and Practice – supplemented with a discussion of landscape architecture education. Prominent as well as up-and-coming contributors from landscape architecture and adjacent fields including Tom Avermaete, Peter Carl, Gareth Doherty, Ottmar Ette, Matthew Gandy, Christophe Girot, Anne Whiston Spirn, Ian H. Thompson and Jane Wolff seek to widen, fuel, and frame critical discussion in this growing area. A significant contribution to landscape architecture research, this book will be beneficial not only to students and academics in landscape architecture, but also to scholars in related fields such as history, architecture, and social studies.
