To have entered upon an ambitious field involving such important elements in the evolution of industry would have led to a work much more extensive than that contemplated. The results have been given, however, in such concise form as to present the general story of our industrial growth and the logical effects of such growth as shown in the various phases of the labor movement. Modern industry brought this movement as it is now understood into existence, and its influence upon future development will be important. As invention has been the vitalizing principle of the factory system, it has been deemed wise to incorporate chapters on the influence of machinery.
