Book excerpt: Excerpt from Industrial Chemistry: A Manual for Use in Technical Colleges or Schools and for Manufacturers, Etc.; Based Upon a Translation (Partly by Dr. T. D. Barry) Of Stohmann and Engler's German Edition of Payen's "Precis De Chime Industrielle" One of the most noteworthy characteristics of the present time is the growing recognition of science as the highest form of practical knowledge, and of the fact that, since the processes of industrial art are but particular instances of the general habitudes of nature, the successful conduct of technical operations, no less than the improvement of particular branches of industry, involves acquaintance with natural facts and principles, which it is the special business of abstract science to deal with altogether apart from considerations of utility; In this respect no branch of science is more important than Chemistry, because there is scarcely any great industry in which the materials operated upon are not, at some stage or other, made to undergo chemical alteration. In the extraction of the useful metals from their ores, in the making of glass and pottery ware, in dyeing and calico-printing, as well as in the preparation of various articles of food, such as bread, beer, etc., the desired results are obtained by producing suitable chemical alterations. Book an introduction to Industrial Chemistry

Download or read book an introduction to Industrial Chemistry written by C A Heaton and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 430 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The importance of industrial chemistry Chemistry is a challenging and interesting subject for academic study. Its principles and ideas are used to produce the chemicals from which all manner of materials and eventually consumer products are manufactured. The diversity of examples is enormous, ranging from cement to iron and steel, and on to modern plastics which are so widely used in the packaging of consumer goods and in the manufacture of household items. Indeed life as we know it today could not exist without the chemical industry. Its contribution to the saving of lives and relief of suffering is immeasurable; synthetic drugs such as those which lower blood pressure (e. g. /3-blockers), attack bacterial and viral infections (e. g. antibiotics such as the penicillins and cephalosporins) and replace vital natural chemicals which the body is not producing due to some malfunction (e. g. insulin, some vitamins), are particularly noteworthy in this respect. Effect chemicals also clearly make an impact on our everyday lives. Two examples are the use of polytetrafluoroethylene (polytetrafluoroethene Teflon or Fluon) to provide a non-stick surface coating for cooking utensils, and silicones which are used to ease the discharge of bread from baking tins. It should also be noted that the chemical industry's activities have an influence on all other industries, either in terms of providing raw materials or chemicals for quality control analyses and to improve operation, and to treat boiler water, cooling water and effiuents.

Book excerpt: For more than eighty years, the name Ullmann's Encyclopedia of Industrial Chemistry has been synonymous with information of the highest quality. Chemists and engineers in industry and academia know that they can rely on the knowledge and expertise of around 3,000 first-class authors. The Fifth Edition, now available in print as a complete set, is a monumental reference work containing about 1,000 major articles, more than 16 million words, 30,000 figures, 10,000 tables, and innumerable references to further sources of information. Ullmann's users worldwide testify that this superb encyclopedia contains the most complete and up-to-date coverage of chemical technology currently available, including economic aspects, production, transportation, and toxicology. Ullmann's is unsurpassed in terms of organization and presentation. The encyclopedia consists of 37 volumes: 28 "A" volumes, 8 "B" volumes, and one cumulative Index volume. Volumes A1 - A28 contain alphabetically ordered articles on industrial chemicals, product groups, and production processes. Volumes B1 - B8 describe in detail the principles of chemical engineering, new and proven analytical methods, and the essentials of environmental protection technology. "This is a major work, which will prove immensely valuable to institutions and authorities related to the chemical industry." - Chemistry & Industry "...no science or engineering library should be without it." - Angewandte Chemie "Ullmann's might well be preferred...because of its many convenience features and excellent organisation." - Chemical Engineering
