Book excerpt: After ninety years of research on Indus Script, which still remains undeciphered, there now seems to be a consensus amongst the scholars on the direction of writing as from right-to-left. Almost all scholars agree that combination of signs in Indus inscriptions follow certain patterns; any particular sign is followed only by another sign belonging to a pre-defined set. I have recently developed a software program to analyze the Indus inscriptions and to generate concordance tables satisfying pre-formulated criteria. After generating concordance tables relating to the juxtapositions of two or more Indus signs, I drew up a short list of inscriptions with unusual sign patterns. Those are mostly inscriptions found on seals excavated in near eastern sites. One of them is the famous Mesopotamian circular seal with Indus signs. I have since discovered a possible interpretation to this inscription using Dravidian based phonetic syllables. It invokes the Sumerian Mother Goddess and Protector of Ur, Inanna.

Many people are nowadays of the opinion that the Indus script is altogether indecipherable, if not a bilingual of considerable size turns up. The approach to a decipherment presented in this volume makes avail of a bilingual, too, but its masterkey is the discovering of the symbolic connection of the Indus signs with the metaphoric language of the Rg-Veda. Nearly 200 inscriptions, among them the longest and those with the most interesting motifs, have been decoded here by setting them syllable for syllable in relation to Rg-Vedic verses. The results that were gained by this method for the pictographic values of the Indus signs are surprising and far beyond the possibilities of the most daring phantasy. At the same time many problems of the Rg-Veda could be solved or new insights be won.

The Material for this work was provided by some 750 inscribed objects unearthed at the sites in Mohenjodaro and Harappa. These copper coins were also found, and some slabs of clay impressed. The work was first in the study of these scripts, so it was its methodology. The method adopted was to tabulate every occurrence of each sign together with those signs whose morphography suggested the possibility of their being variants. In this way certain sign sequences showed themselves to be of common occurrence. Thus it was possible to recognize variants and also words. The author has also compared these scripts with other scripts, viz. Proto-Elamite and Sumerian scripts, bringing out resemblance between them and suggested that the connection could be due to community of descent or borrowing, which was still to be determined then.
