Book Inductive Measurement of Plasma Jet Electrical Conductivity

Download or read book Inductive Measurement of Plasma Jet Electrical Conductivity written by M. W. Turner and published by . This book was released on 2001 with total page 40 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Measurement of plasma jet electrical conductivity has utility in the development of explosively driven magnetohydrodynamic (MHD) energy converters as well as magnetic flux compression reaction chambers for nuclear/chemical pulse propulsion and power. Within these types of reactors, the physical parameter of critical importance to underlying MHD processes is the magnetic Reynolds number, the value of which depends upon the product of plasma electrical conductivity and velocity. Therefore, a thorough understanding of MHD phenomena at high magnetic Reynolds number is essential, and methods are needed for the accurate and reliable measurement of electrical conductivity in high-speed plasma jets. It is well known that direct measurements using electrodes suffer from large surface resistances, and an electrodeless technique is desired.

Book An Instrument to Measure the Electrical Conductivity of Arc Plasma Jets

Download or read book An Instrument to Measure the Electrical Conductivity of Arc Plasma Jets written by A. E. FUHS and published by . This book was released on 1962 with total page 1 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A transducer has been developed which measures the product of electrical conductivity and velocity (s, u) of conducting gases flowing along its axis. The instrument was calibrated by moving aluminum or graphite rods through the transducer. By using thin-wall, stainless steel tubing, the influence function for the transducer was also obtained. Tests were run on two different arc plasma jet facilities. Values of s, u ranged from 0.02 to 9 megamhos per second. (Author).

Book A Technique for Making Local Measurements of the Conductivity and Velocity of a Plasmajet

Download or read book A Technique for Making Local Measurements of the Conductivity and Velocity of a Plasmajet written by Meredith C. Gourdine and published by . This book was released on 1960 with total page 1 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: For many applications a technique for measuring the local electrical conductivity of a flowing plasma is necessary. One method which has proven itself useful for stationary plasmas is the Langmuir probe; however, this technique has not been successfully applied to flowing plasmas as yet. Anthoer method, developed by Blackman, is not entirely satisfactory because the r-f fields used as a probe do not penetrate the plasma sufficiently. A new method for measuring conductivity is desirable, especially if the method can simultaneously measure local velocity as well.

Book A Measurement of the Electrical Conductivity of Ionized Gases

Download or read book A Measurement of the Electrical Conductivity of Ionized Gases written by W. R. Grabowsky and published by . This book was released on 1960 with total page 30 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Two methods were used in attempts to measure the electrical conductivity of various substances, in particular that of a plasma jet. Transients flowing in a system of coupled circuits were subtracted in such a way that the difference signal is due only to the presence of the conducting material. The amplitude and time decay of the signal are calculable fuctions of the conductivity. This method worked well on graphite, but was too insensitive for aqueous salt (NaCl) solutions. Therefore, it cannot easily be applied to the case of an air arc jet exhaust. The steady-state AC measurement technique was tried next. Resonance properties of a coil coupled to the conducting material were measured and compared to the corresponding properties of the same coil in the absence of the conducting substance. This method was used on salt water in the frequency range of 1-10 mc. It was found to be sufficiently sensitive that the accuracy of the conductivity measurement was expected to be about 10%. Two problems were encountered, however, that were not solved.
