Download or read book Induction Theorems for Groups of Homotopy Manifold Structures written by Andrew J. Nicas and published by American Mathematical Soc.. This book was released on 1982 with total page 117 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Classifying spaces in surgery theory were first used by Sullivan and Casson in their (independent) unpublished work on the Hauptvermutung for PL manifolds. In his 1968 Ph.D. thesis, F. Quinn developed a general theory of surgery classifying spaces, realizing the Wall surgery groups as the homotopy groups [italic]L[subscript]*([italic]G) = [lowercase Greek]Pi[subscript]*([italic]L([italic]G)) of a spectrum of manifold n-ad surgery problems with fundamental group G. This work presents a detailed account of Quinn's theory. Geometric methods are used to view the Sullivan-Wall manifold structure sequence as an exact sequence of abelian groups (as suggested by Quinn). The intersection of the known induction theorems for generalized cohomology groups and [italic]L-groups then gives an induction theorem for the structure sequence with finite [italic]G.
Download or read book Nilpotence and Periodicity in Stable Homotopy Theory written by Douglas C. Ravenel and published by Princeton University Press. This book was released on 1992-11-08 with total page 228 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Nilpotence and Periodicity in Stable Homotopy Theory describes some major advances made in algebraic topology in recent years, centering on the nilpotence and periodicity theorems, which were conjectured by the author in 1977 and proved by Devinatz, Hopkins, and Smith in 1985. During the last ten years a number of significant advances have been made in homotopy theory, and this book fills a real need for an up-to-date text on that topic. Ravenel's first few chapters are written with a general mathematical audience in mind. They survey both the ideas that lead up to the theorems and their applications to homotopy theory. The book begins with some elementary concepts of homotopy theory that are needed to state the problem. This includes such notions as homotopy, homotopy equivalence, CW-complex, and suspension. Next the machinery of complex cobordism, Morava K-theory, and formal group laws in characteristic p are introduced. The latter portion of the book provides specialists with a coherent and rigorous account of the proofs. It includes hitherto unpublished material on the smash product and chromatic convergence theorems and on modular representations of the symmetric group.
Download or read book Lie Groups Structure Actions and Representations written by Alan Huckleberry and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2013-08-04 with total page 422 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Lie Groups: Structures, Actions, and Representations, In Honor of Joseph A. Wolf on the Occasion of his 75th Birthday consists of invited expository and research articles on new developments arising from Wolf's profound contributions to mathematics. Due to Professor Wolf’s broad interests, outstanding mathematicians and scholars in a wide spectrum of mathematical fields contributed to the volume. Algebraic, geometric, and analytic methods are employed. More precisely, finite groups and classical finite dimensional, as well as infinite-dimensional Lie groups, and algebras play a role. Actions on classical symmetric spaces, and on abstract homogeneous and representation spaces are discussed. Contributions in the area of representation theory involve numerous viewpoints, including that of algebraic groups and various analytic aspects of harmonic analysis. Contributors D. Akhiezer T. Download or read book A Course on Surgery Theory written by Stanley Chang and published by Princeton University Press. This book was released on 2021-01-26 with total page 472 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An advanced treatment of surgery theory for graduate students and researchers Surgery theory, a subfield of geometric topology, is the study of the classifications of manifolds. A Course on Surgery Theory offers a modern look at this important mathematical discipline and some of its applications. In this book, Stanley Chang and Shmuel Weinberger explain some of the triumphs of surgery theory during the past three decades, from both an algebraic and geometric point of view. They also provide an extensive treatment of basic ideas, main theorems, active applications, and recent literature. The authors methodically cover all aspects of surgery theory, connecting it to other relevant areas of mathematics, including geometry, homotopy theory, analysis, and algebra. Later chapters are self-contained, so readers can study them directly based on topic interest. Of significant use to high-dimensional topologists and researchers in noncommutative geometry and algebraic K-theory, A Course on Surgery Theory serves as an important resource for the mathematics community.

This book was released on 1994-02-03 with total page 184 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book describes work on the characterization of closed 4-manifolds in terms of familiar invariants such as Euler characteristic, fundamental group, and Stiefel-Whitney classes. Using techniques from homological group theory, the theory of 3-manifolds and topological surgery, infrasolvmanifolds are characterized up to homeomorphism, and surface bundles are characterized up to simple homotopy equivalence. Non-orientable cases are also considered wherever possible, and in the final chapter the results obtained earlier are applied to 2-knots and complex analytic surfaces.

Download or read book The Topological Classification of Stratified Spaces written by Shmuel Weinberger and published by University of Chicago Press. This book was released on 1994 with total page 308 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book provides the theory for stratified spaces, along with important examples and applications, that is analogous to the surgery theory for manifolds. In the first expository account of this field, Weinberger provides topologists with a new way of looking at the classification theory of singular spaces with his original results. Divided into three parts, the book begins with an overview of modern high-dimensional manifold theory. Rather than including complete proofs of all theorems, Weinberger demonstrates key constructions, gives convenient formulations, and shows the usefulness of the technology. Part II offers the parallel theory for stratified spaces. Here, the topological category is most completely developed using the methods of "controlled topology." Many examples illustrating the topological invariance and noninvariance of obstructions and characteristic classes are provided. Applications for embeddings and immersions of manifolds, for the geometry of group actions, for algebraic varieties, and for rigidity theorems are found in Part III. This volume will be of interest to topologists, as well as mathematicians in other fields such as differential geometry, operator theory, and algebraic geometry.
