Book Review of Best Practices Knowledge and Data Gaps and Research Opportunities for the U S Department of Navy Vapor Intrusion Focus Areas

Download or read book Review of Best Practices Knowledge and Data Gaps and Research Opportunities for the U S Department of Navy Vapor Intrusion Focus Areas written by and published by . This book was released on 2009 with total page 83 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Vapor intrusion (VI) refers to the movement of chemical vapors from contaminated soils or groundwater through the subsurface and into buildings (indoor air). This exposure pathway has attracted significant attention from regulatory agencies over the past decade in response to several well-publicized cases. Virtually all of the current regulatory documents generated are guidance and have not been promulgated as law, allowing for negotiation on the approach to follow in accordance to site-specific conditions. Nevertheless, experience indicates that this guidance also leads to higher costs in mitigation, public relations, and potential litigation. In response to the need for future research and development on reducing high costs and uncertainties of VI assessment strategies (Department of the Navy, DON, 2008), the objective of this report is to identify existing best practices, knowledge and data gaps, and future research into new strategies and techniques. This study was supported by the Navy Environmental Sustainability Development to Integration Program (NESDI) Program, as part of the study on Improved Strategies for Assessment of Vapor Intrusion, under direction by the Space and Naval Warfare (SPAWAR) Systems Center Pacific.

Book Managing Indoor Air Quality

Download or read book Managing Indoor Air Quality written by H. E. Burroughs and published by The Fairmont Press, Inc.. This book was released on 2004 with total page 378 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "This practical desk reference is structured to serve as a guide and information resource - both on treating existing indoor air problems effectively - and on prevention costly IAQ problems from occurring in the first place. Finding solutions to indoor air quality problems is often a complex, multifaceted, multidisciplined endeavor. A single discipline approach from the environmental engineer, the industrial hygienist, or the medical doctor, unfortunately tends to narrow both the control and the treatment options. This book cuts across these professions without being limited by the specificity and bias of any one discipline, to offer those concerned with the total facility a broader, more comprehensive approach to managing indoor air quality and mitigating indoor air quality problems. The third edition has undergone extensive updates and editing in response to the rapid pace of changes end advances in the IAQ industry - most notably the new chapter on building security and the increased emphasis on mold-related issues."--Jacket.

Book Pollution Control Handbook for Oil and Gas Engineering

Download or read book Pollution Control Handbook for Oil and Gas Engineering written by Nicholas P. Cheremisinoff and published by John Wiley & Sons. This book was released on 2016-04-26 with total page 1408 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is a major new handbook that covers hundreds of subjects that cross numerous industry sectors; however, the handbook is heavily slanted to oil and gas environmental management, control and pollution prevention and energy efficient practices. Multi-media pollution technologies are covered : air, water, solid waste, energy. Students, technicians, practicing engineers, environmental engineers, environmental managers, chemical engineers, petroleum engineers, and environmental attorneys are all professionals who will benefit from this major new reference source. The handbook is organized in three parts. Part A provides an extensive compilation of abbreviations and concise glossary of pollution control and engineering terminology. More than 400 terms are defined. The section is intended to provide a simple look-up guide to confusing terminology used in the regulatory field, as well as industry jargon. Cross referencing between related definitions and acronyms are provided to assist the user. Part B provides physical properties and chemical safety information. This part is not intended to be exhaustive; however it does provide supplemental information that is useful to a number of the subject entries covered in the main body of the handbook. Part C is the Macropedia of Subjects. The part is organized as alphabetical subject entries for a wide range of pollution controls, technologies, pollution prevention practices and tools, computational methods for preparing emission estimates and emission inventories and much more. More than 100 articles have been prepared by the author, providing a concise overview of each subject, supplemented by sample calculation methods and examples where appropriate, and references. Subjects included are organized and presented in a macropedia format to assist a user in gaining an overview of the subject, guidance on performing certain calculations or estimates as in cases pertinent to preliminary sizing and selection of pollution controls or in preparing emissions inventories for reporting purposes, and recommended references materials and web sites for more in-depth information, data or computational tools. Each subject entry provides a working overview of the technology, practice, piece of equipment, regulation, or other relevant issue as it pertains to pollution control and management. Cross referencing between related subjects is included to assist the reader to gain as much of a practical level of knowledge.

Book Toxic Town

Download or read book Toxic Town written by Peter C. Little and published by NYU Press. This book was released on 2014-03-14 with total page 265 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Shows the risks of high-tech pollution through a study of an IBM plant's effects on a New York town In 1924, IBM built its first plant in Endicott, New York. Now, Endicott is a contested toxic waste site. With its landscape thoroughly contaminated by carcinogens, Endicott is the subject of one of the nation’s largest corporate-state mitigation efforts. Yet despite the efforts of IBM and the U.S. government, Endicott residents remain skeptical that the mitigation systems employed were designed with their best interests at heart. In Toxic Town, Peter C. Little tracks and critically diagnoses the experiences of Endicott residents as they learn to live with high-tech pollution, community transformation, scientific expertise, corporate-state power, and risk mitigation technologies. By weaving together the insights of anthropology, political ecology, disaster studies, and science and technology studies, the book explores questions of theoretical and practical import for understanding the politics of risk and the ironies of technological disaster response in a time when IBM’s stated mission is to build a “Smarter Planet.” Little critically reflects on IBM’s new corporate tagline, arguing for a political ecology of corporate social and environmental responsibility and accountability that places the social and environmental politics of risk mitigation front and center. Ultimately, Little argues that we will need much more than hollow corporate taglines, claims of corporate responsibility, and attempts to mitigate high-tech disasters to truly build a smarter planet.

Book Management of Legionella in Water Systems

Download or read book Management of Legionella in Water Systems written by National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine and published by National Academies Press. This book was released on 2020-02-20 with total page 291 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Legionnaires' disease, a pneumonia caused by the Legionella bacterium, is the leading cause of reported waterborne disease outbreaks in the United States. Legionella occur naturally in water from many different environmental sources, but grow rapidly in the warm, stagnant conditions that can be found in engineered water systems such as cooling towers, building plumbing, and hot tubs. Humans are primarily exposed to Legionella through inhalation of contaminated aerosols into the respiratory system. Legionnaires' disease can be fatal, with between 3 and 33 percent of Legionella infections leading to death, and studies show the incidence of Legionnaires' disease in the United States increased five-fold from 2000 to 2017. Management of Legionella in Water Systems reviews the state of science on Legionella contamination of water systems, specifically the ecology and diagnosis. This report explores the process of transmission via water systems, quantification, prevention and control, and policy and training issues that affect the incidence of Legionnaires' disease. It also analyzes existing knowledge gaps and recommends research priorities moving forward.
