Book excerpt: "Indonesia has employed secondary-trained EFL teachers to teach English to children since the EFL program was introduced in primary schools in 1994 (Suyanto, 2004). Many EFL teacher educators in Indonesia have debated the employment of these teachers in primary schools because they were prepared to teach English to secondary school students; it has been assumed that their educational background is not relevant to undertake the teaching task at the primary level. The research investigated motivational factors that have brought secondary-trained EFL teachers in Indonesia to choose the EFL teaching profession and to teach English to children in primary schools, and analysed the EFL teaching knowledge these teachers used to work with children in primary classrooms. The overarching questions of the study are: “What motivational factors have led secondary-trained EFL teachers to teach English in primary classrooms?†and “How do these teachers approach the work of EFL teaching in primary classrooms in Indonesia?†The study used a qualitative research approach underpinned by interpretive phenomenology (Heidegger, 1962; van Manen, 1997) to understand the motivational factors and the EFL teaching knowledge of the participants. Interpretive phenomenology supported the researcher’s interest in the experience of secondary-trained EFL teachers working in primary contexts in Indonesia. Thirteen participants from nine primary schools in Jambi City, Indonesia were chosen to participate in the study. The participants were interviewed and their practice was observed." -- Abstract.

The first one is the inner circle, then the outer circle, and the last one is the expanding circle. The last one, the expanding circle refers to the countries where English is a foreign language, including Indonesia. People living in the expanding circle may not get as much exposure as the ones living in the inner or outer circles. They are not exposed to both the spoken and written language as much as those living in the previously mentioned circles. Language learners have to struggle in learning English. This paper describes the challenges and difficulties encountered by six EFL teachers in Indonesia. Two research questions guided this study: What challenges are faced by six Indonesian teachers in teaching English? And what solutions do the teachers implement to solve the problems? The six teachers were selected as respondents because they faced special challenges and difficulties in teaching their high school students. Data were collected through questionnaires distributed to the teachers and interviews done via Google Meet. The findings revealed that the problems the teachers faced varied from social, personal, psychological, as well as financial problems, which the language learners encountered.

Current Indonesian policies in education encourage teachers to integrate technology into teaching and learning activities to bolster the effectiveness and efficiency of their teaching practice (Ministry of National Education Indonesia, 2013). Previous studies found that various technology-based pedagogies yielded rewarding results for learners' language skills in Indonesia, yet teachers report a lack of skills and knowledge necessary for CALL (Computer Assisted Language Learning) integration (Cahyani & Cahyono, 2012; Ridwan, 2017). There are, however, limited studies examining teachers' readiness and skills to implement technology use in their classroom instructions. Therefore, the present study investigates teachers' technological skills to implement CALL-based English as Foreign Language (EFL) instructions, particularly in Maluku, Indonesia using the TPACK (Technology, Pedagogy, and Content Knowledge) Framework (Koehler & Mishra, 2006). EFL high school teachers (N=43) from Maluku, Indonesia participated in the study. The data were collected using an online TPACK survey (Schmidt et al, 2009; Sahin, 2011) and follow-up interviews (Nila, 2013). The teachers showed interest and awareness of the use of technology to facilitate efficient and effective EFL instruction. The majority of participants demonstrated their perceived understanding of utilizing and combining technology with their pedagogical practices. Further, the interviews uncovered the fact that a handful of technology tools were already employed to improve students' practice of English inside and beyond classrooms. These findings shed light on the reality that Indonesian EFL teachers are prepared to enact CALL. Nevertheless, participants encountered challenges for effective enactment of CALL-based EFL instruction such as a lack of CALL training and accessible technology to facilitate learning. The findings then suggest a need for training modules for technology incorporation in ELT, quality school facilities, and assistance in developing technology based EFL teaching.

Book excerpt: Indonesia has an extreme diversity of linguistic wealth, with 707 languages by one count, or 731 languages and more than 1,100 dialects in another estimate, spoken by more than 600 ethnicities spread across 17,504 islands in the archipelago. Smaller, locally used indigenous languages jostle for survival alongside Indonesian, which is the national language, regional lingua francas, major indigenous languages, heritage languages, sign languages and world languages such as English, Arabic and Mandarin, not to mention emerging linguistic varieties and practices of language mixing. How does the government manage these languages in different domains such as education, the media, the workplace and the public while balancing concerns over language endangerment and the need for participation in the global community? Subhan Zein asserts that superdiversity is the key to understanding and assessing these intricate issues and their complicated, contested and innovative responses in the complex, dynamic and polycentric sociolinguistic situation in Indonesia that he conceptualises as superglossia. This offers an opportunity for us to delve more deeply into such a context through the language and superdiversity perspective that is in ascendancy. Zein examines emerging themes that have been dominating language policy discourse including status, prestige, corpus, acquisition, cultivation, language shift and endangerment, revitalisation, linguistic genocide and imperialism, multilingual education, personnel policy, translanguaging, family language policy and global English. These topical areas are critically discussed in an integrated manner against Indonesia’s elaborate socio-cultural, political and religious backdrop as well as the implementation of regional autonomy. In doing so, Zein identifies strategies for language policy to help inform scholarship and policymaking while providing a frame of reference for the adoption of the superdiversity perspective on polity-specific language policy in other parts of the world.
