Book The White Book on the 1992 General Election in Indonesia

Download or read book The White Book on the 1992 General Election in Indonesia written by and published by Equinox Publishing. This book was released on 2010-02 with total page 114 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: On November 18, 1992, a delegation representing Badan Perlindungan Hak-Hak Politik Rakyat dalam Menghadapi Pemilihan Umum 1992 (BPHPR) [Body for the Protection of the People's Political Rights Facing the 1992 General Election], presented a "White Book" on the election to the People's Representative Assembly (MPR). The delegation members were received by Prof. Dr. Achmad Amiruddin, the Deputy Chairman of the MPR, who was quoted as "valuing their opinion," but who refused to be engaged in dialogue on the issues raised in the White Book. As far as is known, nothing more became of that document until now. Most of it is presented here in translation. The White Book contains not only a detailed accounting of infractions and fraud that occurred during the campaign and election process, but also a fundamental critique of the system of popular representation under the New Order, of which general elections are only a part. This critique arises, in the first instance, from the discrepancy between New Order laws, regulations, and rhetoric on the one hand, and actual practices on the other. But it also arises from a deeper -- some would say idealistic -- vision of popular democracy in Indonesia, including the role of political parties, elections, and the rule of law. In this vision, some basic human rights, including the political right to abstain in elections, are inviolate. The White Book, while presenting a fundamental critique of general elections in the New Order political system, also documents numerous infractions that occurred in the conduct or actual practice of the 1992 election. This in itself must have been a difficult task. Still remaining is a comparison of 1992 against the conduct of previous elections. The question intrigues serious students of Indonesian politics: overall, how did the conduct of the 1992 election measure up against previous New Order elections? It seems fair to conclude that in 1992 there was less overt intervention by the Armed Forces in favor of Golkar than in previous elections, and that the 1992 election was implemented in a more neutral fashion at both the upper or central and the provincial levels. But there was little change at the lower levels, where numerous violations and manipulations occurred in such aspects as the distribution of summonses needed to vote, the presence of party witnesses at polling places, attention paid to witnesses' complaints, meaningful participation of party representatives in committees (PPS and KPPS), and the initial compilation of the votes.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book places Indonesia at the forefront of the global debate about the impact of 'disruptive' digital technologies. Digital technology is fast becoming the core of life, work, culture and identity. Yet, while the number of Indonesians using the Internet has followed the upward global trend, some groups "e;the poor, the elderly, women, the less well-educated, people living in remote communities"e; are disadvantaged. This interdisciplinary collection of essays by leading researchers and scholars, as well as e-governance and e-commerce insiders, examines the impact of digitalisation on the media industry, governance, commerce, informal sector employment, education, cybercrime, terrorism, religion, artistic and cultural expression, and much more. It presents groundbreaking analysis of the impact of digitalisation in one of the world's most diverse, geographically vast nations. In weighing arguments about the opportunities and challenges presented by digitalisation, it puts the very idea of a technological 'revolution' into critical perspective.

Download or read book Education in Indonesia written by Daniel Suryadarma and published by Institute of Southeast Asian Studies. This book was released on 2013 with total page 306 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In Indonesia, as elsewhere in Asia, education will inevitably play a key role in the national development experience as the twenty-first century unfolds. Not much international attention is paid to how the education sector is faring in Indonesia, but that is not because nothing is happening. The past decade has seen major changes in the structure of the education system and in the schooling trajectories of Indonesian children and adolescents. The administration of primary and secondary education has been decentralized to the regions. A new paradigm of school-based management has been introduced. Public spending on education has finally reached one-fifth of total government spending, as required by law. But although enrolment rates at all levels continue to increase, the quality of education remains low and has not improved, and the tertiary sector continues to experience problems of autonomy and unsatisfactory performance.

Book Indonesia in the New World

Download or read book Indonesia in the New World written by Arianto A. Patunru and published by ISEAS-Yusof Ishak Institute. This book was released on 2018-05-30 with total page 356 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Globalisation is more complex than ever. The effects of the global financial crisis and increased inequality have spurred anti-globalisation sentiment in many countries and encouraged the adoption of populist and inward-looking policies. This has led to some surprising results: Duterte, Brexit and Trump, to name a few. In Indonesia, the disappointment with globalisation has led to rising protectionism, a rejection of foreign interference in the name of nationalism, and economic policies dominated by calls for self-sufficiency. Meanwhile, human trafficking and the abuse of migrant workers show the dark side of globalisation. In this volume, leading experts explore key issues around globalisation, nationalism and sovereignty in Indonesia. Topics include the history of Indonesia’s engagement with the world, Indonesia’s stance on the South China Sea and the re-emergence of nationalism. The book also examines the impact of globalisation on poverty and inequality, labour markets and people, especially women.

Book Land and Development in Indonesia

Download or read book Land and Development in Indonesia written by John F McCarthy and published by Flipside Digital Content Company Inc.. This book was released on 2017-03-09 with total page 430 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Indonesia was founded on the ideal of the "e;Sovereignty of the People"e;, which suggests the pre-eminence of people's rights to access, use and control land to support their livelihoods. Yet, many questions remain unresolved. How can the state ensure access to land for agriculture and housing while also supporting land acquisition for investment in industry and infrastructure? What is to be done about indigenous rights? Do registration and titling provide solutions? Is the land reform agenda "e;legislated but never implemented"e; still relevant? How should the land questions affecting Indonesia's disappearing forests be resolved? The contributors to this volume assess progress on these issues through case studies from across the archipelago: from large-scale land acquisitions in Papua, to asset ownership in the villages of Sulawesi and Java, to tenure conflicts associated with the oil palm and mining booms in Kalimantan, Sulawesi and Sumatra. What are the prospects for the "e;people's sovereignty"e; in regard to land?

Download or read book Indonesia written by and published by World Bank Publications. This book was released on 1994-01-01 with total page 340 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Indonesia has been remarkably successful in achieving its development objectives over the past 25 years. Although it is still a low-income country, its tradition of sound economic management has laid the foundations for continued progress in the decades ahead. As the Indonesian government formulates its second long-term development plan, issues of environmental quality and sustainability raise new concerns. This report examines environmental issues, assesses their implications for the achievement of development goals, and suggests an action plan that would help to ensure that those goals will be met. The analysis of current environmental conditions and trends and of the likely impact of future growth leads to three main conclusions: - Future growth will depend increasingly on Indonesia's stock of key natural resources and the sustainability of critical ecosystems. -The industrial sector will continue to expand in urban areas, where growing congestion and industrial pollution pose an immediate threat to health and human welfare. This will eventually lead to negative effects on the economy. -As a result of rapid growth, environment- related issues of equity among the population will become increasingly important.

Book The Politics and Economics of Indonesia s Natural Resources

Download or read book The Politics and Economics of Indonesia s Natural Resources written by Budy P Resosudarmo and published by Institute of Southeast Asian Studies. This book was released on 2005 with total page 321 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The challenges in using and managing natural resources in Indonesia are immense. They include ensuring that resource utilisation benefits most Indonesians; optimising the rate of exploitation of mineral reserves, bearing in mind the interests of future generations; and achieving sustainable forest and maritime exploitation. Recent rapid political change under reformasi and decentralisation may seem to have provided opportunities for a long-term development path that embraces both resource sustainability and equity issues. However, they have also generated an environment of political uncertainty, weak law enforcement, increased insecurity of property rights and local conflicts. This situation, together with the post-crisis imperative of restoring socio-economic progress, has created a pressing need to address the challenges of proper utilisation and management of natural resources. This book examines these and related issues from a political, socio-economic, and environmental standpoint. 1st Reprint 2006

Book Local Power Politics in Indonesia

Download or read book Local Power Politics in Indonesia written by Edward Aspinall and published by Flipside Digital Content Company Inc.. This book was released on 2003-08-01 with total page 245 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Indonesia is experiencing an historic and dramatic shift in political and economic power from the centre to the local level. The collapse of the highly centralised Soeharto regime allowed long-repressed local aspirations to come to the fore. The new Indonesian Government then began one of the world's most radical decentralisation programmes, under which extensive powers are being devolved to the district level. In every region and province, diverse popular movements and local claimants to state power are challenging the central authorities. This book is the first comprehensive coverage on decentralisation in Indonesia. It contains contributions from leading academics and policy-makers on a wide range of topics relating to democratisation, devolution and the blossoming of local-level politics.
