Book excerpt: English Abstract:South Korea (hereafter Korea) and Indonesia celebrate their 50th anniversary of diplomatic relations in 2023. Since establishing a strategic partnership in 2006, the two countries have developed close ties based on mutual trust and respect. In recognition of the growing common interests and strategic values perceived by each other, Korea and Indonesia elevated their bilateral relations to a “special strategic partnership” in 2017. Indeed, amid intensifying strategic competition between the U.S. and China, Indonesia has emerged as a major partner for Korea to diversify its economic and diplomatic relations. And with the Russia-Ukraine war adding to the woes in the global supply chain already disrupted by the Covid-19 pandemic, Indonesia has become a key partner for Korea to expand its supply chain cooperation. From Indonesia's perspective, Korea is considered a major economy that can contribute to the modernization of its manufacturing industry, relocation of the capital city and the growth of its defense industry. Among other things, as middle powers in the Indo-Pacific region, the two countries share the common goal of promoting inclusive regional order amid the increasing Sino-U.S. rivalry. Against this background, this study evaluates 50 years of Korea-Indonesia relations and analyzes what opportunities and challenges lie ahead for upgrading bilateral cooperation. Based on the above analysis, the study provides policy recommendations for further strengthening strategic partnership between Korea and Indonesia.

While such soft power diffusion contributes to Taiwan’s triple quests for legitimacy as a member of international community, status as a constructive actor in the region and long-term economic prosperity for the island-state, the emergence of China as an economic superpower in the 21st century has significantly challenged such quests from Taipei. The contributors to this volume examine both the intentions and the reception of Taiwan’s approach to the nations of ASEAN. Proponents highlight the potential for job creation and poverty alleviation, but scholars are more cautious, noting that social impacts of oil palm are not well understood. This report draws upon primary research in West Kalimantan to explore the gendered dynamics of oil palm among smallholders and plantation workers. It concludes that the social and economic benefits of oil palm are real, but restricted to particular social groups. Among smallholders in the research area, couples who were able to sustain diverse farming systems and add oil palm to their repertoire benefited more than transmigrants, who had to survive on limited incomes from a 2-ha plot.
