Book Deepening Economic Cooperation between India and Sri Lanka

Download or read book Deepening Economic Cooperation between India and Sri Lanka written by Indra Nath Mukherji and published by Asian Development Bank. This book was released on 2013-09-01 with total page 244 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book analyzes the performance and impact of the India–Sri Lanka free trade agreement over the past decade and suggests the way forward. India became an important source of imports for Sri Lanka immediately after the implementation of the free trade agreement. Bilateral trade between the countries increased steadily thereafter, with Sri Lankan commodities finding a large market in India. The composition of trade also changed with an increased number of new goods being traded. The book computes indices and suggests scope for deepening economic cooperation between the two countries by pruning the negative lists for trade in goods, identifying potential investment, and suggesting policies for expanding cooperation in services.

Two days before Christmas in 1987, at the age of 17, Niromi de Soyza found herself in an ambush as part of a small platoon of militant Tamil Tigers fighting government forces in the bloody civil war that was to engulf Sri Lanka for decades. With her was her lifelong friend, Ajanthi, also aged 17. Leaving behind them their shocked middle-class families, the teenagers had become part of the Tamil Tigers' first female contingent. Equipped with little more than a rifle and a cyanide capsule, Niromi's group managed to survive on their wits in the jungle, facing not only the perils of war but starvation, illness and growing internal tensions among the militant Tigers. And then events erupted in ways that she could no longer bear. How was it that this well-educated, mixed-race, middle-class girl from a respectable family came to be fighting with the Tamil Tigers?

Book India s Search for Power

Download or read book India s Search for Power written by Surjit Mansingh and published by SAGE Publications Pvt. Limited. This book was released on 1984-04-07 with total page 430 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: India's Search for Power is a scholarly and analytic assessment of Indira Gandhi's foreign policy during her two tenures in power (1966-77 and 1980 to date). Dr Mansingh has provided a well balanced and comprehensive account of the structure and effects of her foreign policy which goes a long way to becoming the definitive study of the subject. In his foreword Selig Harrison described the book as 'a significant contribution to the literature on South Asia, one that will be of enduring interest to students of India's foreign policy as well as to those interested in the larger problems of relations between developed and developing countries.' Surjit Mansingh first examines Indira Gandhi's foreign policy legacy, and the way in which she modified it. Major foreign policy objectives, and the instruments at Mrs Gandhi's disposal in achieving those ends are also outlined. In the final chapter the book examines Mrs Gandhi's economic diplomacy and India's relationship with institutions such as the World Bank, the IMF, and the EEC.

Book The Assassination of Rajiv Gandhi

Download or read book The Assassination of Rajiv Gandhi written by Neena Gopal and published by Penguin UK. This book was released on 2016-08-16 with total page 174 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: On 21 May 1991, journalist Neena Gopal had finished just one part of an interview with Rajiv Gandhi—the last of his life—when his car reached the election rally at Sriperumbudur. Moments later, Rajiv Gandhi was dead, blown up by suicide bomber Dhanu, irrevocably changing the course of Indian politics, as Neena Gopal, just yards behind him, watched in horror. In this gripping, definitive book, Gopal reconstructs the chain of events in India and at the LTTE’s headquarters in Sri Lanka where the assassination plot was hatched, and follows the trail of investigation that led to the assassins being brought to justice. Drawing on extensive interviews, research and her own vast experience as a journalist, she deftly establishes the background—the shortsightedness of India’s Sri Lanka policy; the friction between the intelligence agencies and between the agencies and the external affairs ministry; the many warnings that went unheeded; and the implacable hatred that LTTE supremo Prabhakaran felt for Rajiv Gandhi. Bringing all these complex threads together, Gopal takes us step by step to Sriperumbudur as Rajiv Gandhi walked inexorably to his death on that tragic May evening twenty-five years ago.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In mid-March 1992, a group of forty scholars, journalists, strategists, and government officials met in Kathmandu, Nepal, to assess the post-Cold War world. The meeting marked both a summing up and a beginning. Many of the conference participants had been associated at one time or another with the Program in Arms Control, Disarmament, and International Security (A CD IS) at the University of lllinois at Urbana-Champaign. Founded in 1978, ACDIS had from its very first year recruited scholars from South Asia (and scholars working on South Asia). Much of this work was supported by a continuing grant from the Ford Foundation (which also contributed major support for the Kathmandu meeting), but lllinois was also "home" for a number of Fulbright and Asia Foundation grantees.1 The meeting in Kathmandu provided an opportunity for these individuals to again meet with each other and with faculty and staff associated with ACDIS.
