The literature review covered cognitive development theorists, instructional methods and the theories behind them, and current trends in mathematics education. Six teachers were interviewed and four classrooms were observed. Interviews were conducted to discover how first grade teahcers are currently teaching math and the methodology behind their instruction. The results of this study showed that the most important aspects of classroom experiences that promote a child's learning of mathematics are understanding the individual child's developmental level; communication between teachers, parents and students; hands-on learning experiences for the children; and an environment that encourages critical thinking.
