Book excerpt: Pesticide use is altering our environment and consequently the environment of innumerable other species. Pesticides can affect the development and survival of a species through two general pathways. Pesticides can affect a species directly by altering that species' behavior and physiology (direct effects) or indirectly by altering the community of which it is a part (indirect effects). My research focused on two major objectives. First, I attempted to determine the relative importance of direct and indirect effects in a simple aquatic community. Second, I attempted to use knowledge about amphibian ecology to generate a qualitative model explaining observed indirect effects of a pesticide that are mediated by a tadpole's aquatic community. Based on this study's results, indirect effects of a pesticide are very important and may even be the primary pathway by which a species is affected if other species in the community are relatively more sensitive to the direct effects of a pesticide. Furthermore, pesticides can interact with predators and competitors to cause indirect effects that would not necessarily be predicted based on laboratory studies. Determination of whether a pesticide will cause overall benefit or harm to given species is dependent on (1) the relative sensitivity of that species to the pesticide compared to other species in the community and on (2) the relationship between that species and other species in the community. It was possible to generate a qualitative model that was consistent with the results of this study and that would allow ecotoxicologists to generate testable hypotheses about the effects of a pesticide on organisms within a community. However, the usefulness of such a model is dependent on a comprehensive knowledge of how species interact with each other within the community. This study illustrates the importance of collaboration between toxicologists and ecologists if we are to make major advances in our knowledge of how pesticides are changing biotic communities. We will not have an adequate understanding of the effects of pesticides within communities until ecological theory about the regulation of populations and communities is integrated with knowledge of the toxicological effects of pesticides on component members of the community.

I am well aware of the risk involved nowadays in attempting, on one's own, to integrate results from a wide variety of scientific disciplines into a meaningful whole, and for this reason I am always grateful for corrections and for additional information.
