Book Documentation of Indigenous Knowledge in Coastal Farming System

This book was released on 2015-04-08 with total page 196 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The success of green revolution of 1960's had resulted in India achieving self- sufficiency in food production system. Use of high yielding varieties, high analysis fertilizers, soil and water management practices had resulted in achievement of improved production and productivity. However, recent years had sow "plateauing of yield" in the agricultural production scenario. So with a raising population and fastly depleting natural resources, policy planners think of alternative production system which are eco-friendly, cheap, sustainable with improved productivity gains. Indigenous knowledge being evolved as age old treasures with a rich traditional wisdom remains as a best alternative. Keeping this in view a study was conducted to document the indigenous technical knowledge in coastal farming system of Tamil Nadu. The research was conducted in 12 coastal districts of Tamil Nadu. About 240 coastal farmers was selected using random sampling method. Pre-tested interview schedule was used for the data collection process. About 149 indigenous items of coastal areas were collected and rationalised.

Book Women s Indigenous Knowledge in Household Food Security

Download or read book Women s Indigenous Knowledge in Household Food Security written by Agatha Daniel and published by LAP Lambert Academic Publishing. This book was released on 2012-03 with total page 100 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: There is need to change our approach of community intervention and focus our attention on people's capabilities rather that their deficiences. In the context of food security, women are key players in ensuring that their households are food secure. They not only assume significant roles in food production but also hold crucial indigenous knowledge that is neatly knitted in their farming practices. However, despite the recognization that local level knowledge provides foundation for participatory approaches to agricultural development, the infliction of science and increasingly competitive global economy have continued to trivialize and neglect indigenous knowledge in food production. This dismal state of recognition had made it difficult to establish the extent to which local farmers use their indigenous knowledge in farming activities. This case study explores the local knowledge practiced by women farmers in Mulilii sub-location, Eastern Kenya. This book will interest holistic readers keen in participatory collaboration in knowledge generation, technology development and innovation in food production.
