Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Phoenix dactylifera (date or date palm) is a flowering plant species in the palm family Arecaceae, cultivated for its edible sweet fruit. Although its place of origin is unknown because of long cultivation, according to Wilson, it is probably originated from lands around Iraq and south west of Iran. Half of the Fresh dates production belong to Khoozestan and Bein Al-Nahrain, Karoon and Arvand river basins in Iran. Fresh dates areas production dates back to 300 years B.C. Since its great resistance against salty water, Wilson called it the " Life Tree." In this book which is divided to five chapters, different dates varieties and the areas under cultivation of Palm trees are discussed in details. Systematic features, its classifications, cultivation, pollination, its nutrition values, pharmacological features, needed manure and pesticides and the possible fight ways against them are clearly elaborated.

Cultivated for millennia in the arid regions of the world, from the Atlantic Ocean across North Africa, through the deserts of Arabia and into the Indus Valley, the importance of the date palm is being rediscovered. Its value as the sustaining pillar of market gardens in marginal agricultural communities cannot be overemphasized. Modern science and technology is also investigating the undisputed usefulness of the date palm in changing arid microclimates, increasing the potential for crop diversity and arresting desertification. Research is additionally directed at countering threats to the date palm emanating from disease and uninformed agricultural practices. As a tree that has emerged from ancient history into the modern world, the date palm is eliciting a great deal of interest in fields as diverse as biotechnology and international marketing. New markets for the date fruit are encouraging production, with the concomitant increase in technological innovation and economic investment. To explore the potential of the date palm and all aspects of its industry, The Emirates Center for Strategic Studies and Research hosted the International Date Palm Forum in Abu Dhabi, on September 15–17, 2002. This book represents a collection of expert papers on the full range of topics pertaining to the date palm, from its archaeology, cultivation and traditional uses, to international marketing and biotech applications in modern propagation methods and disease control. It provides a thorough overview for any reader wanting to gain insight into this industry, from its ancient roots to its modern day practices.

Book Morphological Characteristics of Date Palm

Download or read book Morphological Characteristics of Date Palm written by Ghayoor Fatima and published by LAP Lambert Academic Publishing. This book was released on 2014 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Family Palmae (Arecaceae) is a family of monocotyledons comprising of about 200 genera and 1,500 species. Phoenix L. is one of the genera which contain a dozen species, all native to the tropical or subtropical regions of Africa or Southern Asia. Date palm is diploid (2n=36), perennial tree. Being dioecious in nature, date palm has separate female and male individuals. Female palm trees are cultivated for their nutritive fruits while male trees produce pollens. The present research was conducted at Date Palm Research Station, Jhang, Pakistan, where 32 cultivars of date palm (Phoenix dactylifera L.) were studied for the evaluation of qualitative and quantitative morphological characteristics in order to obtain accurate knowledge and description of the genetic resources. The identification of the most relevant characteristics of date palm was done by descriptors in field surveys during vegetative and reproductive periods. Fruits were taken to Anatomy lab, University of Agriculture, Faisalabad, Pakistan where measurements regarding qualitative and quantitative characteristics were recorded.

Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Date Palm: And Its Utilization in the Southwestern States The date palm has the unusual power of resisting large amounts of alkali, the most dangerous foe to agriculture in the arid regions, both in the soil and in the irrigating water. This will permit it to be grown profitably on lands so salty as to prevent the culture of any other pay ing crop, and thereby render feasible the reclamation of hundreds of square miles of the most fertile lands in the Southwest which, at great expense, have been put under irrigation. Book Genetic Diversity and Erosion in Plants

Download or read book Genetic Diversity and Erosion in Plants written by M.R. Ahuja and published by Springer. This book was released on 2015-12-16 with total page 439 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Genetic erosion is the loss of genetic diversity within a species. It can happen very quickly, due to catastrophic events, or changes in land use leading to habitat loss. But it can also occur more gradually and remain unnoticed for a long time. One of the main causes of genetic erosion is the replacement of local varieties by modern varieties. Other causes include environmental degradation, urbanization, and land clearing through deforestation and brush fires. In order to conserve biodiversity in plants, it is important to targets three independent levels that include ecosystems, species and genes. Genetic diversity is important to a species’ fitness, long-term viability, and ability to adapt to changing environmental conditions. Chapters in this book are written by leading geneticists, molecular biologists and other specialists on relevant topics on genetic erosion and conservation genetic diversity in plants. This divisible set of two volumes deals with a broad spectrum of topics on genetic erosion, and approaches to biodiversity conservation in crop plants and trees. Volume 1 deals with indicators and prevention of genetic erosion, while volume 2 covers genetic diversity and erosion in a number of plants species. These two volumes will also be useful to botanists, biotechnologists, environmentalists, policy makers, conservationists, and NGOs working to manage genetic erosion and biodiversity.

Download or read book Date Palm written by Jameel M Al-Khayri and published by CABI. This book was released on 2023-06-14 with total page 658 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Date palm (Phoenix dactylifera L.) is a tree belonging to the palm family (Arecaceae) and is cultivated for its sweet edible fruits. Over the past century, it has become a major commercial fruit crop and a key component of agricultural production in the world's subtropical arid and semiarid regions. A crop suited both to the low-input small-farmer and the modern high-input commercial plantation, the date palm provides a livelihood for millions of people living in marginal land areas where farming options are restricted. Date palm is mainly grown for its fruits, but the whole tree is utilized. Research into date palm improvement for fruit production in recent decades has brought about improved elite cultivars, stress and pathogen resistance, and enhanced postharvest technologies. These developments have led to revised recommendations for date palm producers, and increased opportunity to promote novel fruit products. With contributions from leading international experts, this is a valuable resource for researchers and students in horticulture, as well as date palm growers and processors.
