Le praticien se trouve alors confronté à une multitude de matériaux pour un seul objectif, l'obturation étanche du système canalaire. Dans notre travail de thèse, nous allons donc dans une première partie, énoncer les indications et les objectifs de la chirurgie endodontique ainsi que la technique opératoire. Puis, dans une deuxième partie, les matériaux d'obturation seront décrits. Par choix, nous n'étudierons que l'amalgame, les ciments verre-ionomères, les eugénolates modifiés (IRM® et SuperEBA®) et les ciments à base de silicate de calcium comme le MTA et la Biodentine®. Ces matériaux feront ensuite l'objet d'une comparaison de leur étanchéité grâce aux études in vitro. La dernière partie nous permettra d'aborder les matériaux d'obturation vus auparavant, sur un plan clinique et de comprendre la difficulté que le praticien peut rencontrer lors du choix du matériau et les échecs de cette chirurgie.
