Book Nationalism and Global Solidarities

Download or read book Nationalism and Global Solidarities written by James Goodman and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2006-11-29 with total page 225 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Even in the face of neoliberal globalization, nationalism remains a significant political force. The leading contributors to this new volume explore the extent to which nationalism can be a foundation for alternative solidarities. Against the axiom that with globalization ‘all that is solid melts into air,’ this anthology debates the extent to which different forms of solidarity remain viable - from the solidarities of local political groups to the solidarities of nationalism, internationalism and alternative globalisms. Organized into three sections, the book addresses the relationship between the contemporary formations of nationalism, globalism and solidarity movements: Part 1 offers a framework for understanding globalization and discusses the effect of globality on nationalism Part 2 addresses the logics of nationalisms in globalizing contexts: respectively, liberal nationalism, left nationalism, post-colonial nationalism, and revivals of nationalism Part 3 addresses issues of solidarity and integration in a world of nationalism and globalism, asking how differing forms of connectivity may be emerging, disrupting prevailing oppositions and relations, focusing on social movements and solidarity. Offering the first detailed study of the relationship between globalization and nationalism, Nationalism and Global Solidarities will be of strong interest to students and scholars of politics, sociology and international political economy.

Book The Bhagavadgita in the Nationalist Discourse

Download or read book The Bhagavadgita in the Nationalist Discourse written by Nagappa Gowda K. and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2011-05-30 with total page 253 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Bhagavadgita has lent itself to several readings to defend or contest various views on life, morality, and metaphysics. This book explores the the role of the Bhagavadgita in the formation of nationalist discourse. It examines the ways in which the Gita became the central terrain of nationalist contestation, and the diverse ethico-moral mappings of the Indian nation. Focusing on Bankimchandra Chatterjee, Balgangadhar Tilak, Swami Vivekananda, Aurobindo Ghose, Mahatma Gandhi, Vinoba Bhave, and B.R. Ambedkar as the representatives of different strands of nationalist discourse, this volume probes their reflections on the Gita. The author also discusses with issues such as the relation between the nation and the masses, renunciation and engagement with the world, the ideas of equality, freedom, and common good, in the context of a nationalist discourse. He argues that the commentaries on this 'timeless' text opened up several possible understandings without necessarily eliminating one another.
