Book excerpt: Excerpt from Indians of the Eastern Shore of Maryland Where did they come from if, like a number of other tribes in the eastern United States, the Nanticoke and their relatives were not of ancient descent in the region where they were found by the first white people who came to the shores of the Chesapeake? Even the Pow batans of Virginia told the Jamestown authorities that their ancestors had been in Virginia only about 300 years before the coming of the English. The traditions of the Nanticoke claim that they had their earlier situations somewhere in the central regions of the United States, where they dwelt as members of a great tribal group before its subdi vision into the branches Which later became known to the first white explorers. Without actually knowing when or how the first movement toward the east began among these people, our imagination is left to picture to itself the causes and circumstances of its inception. We are told in the national migration legend of the Delawares which has come down to us in the form of a text, accompanied by a pictorial record, published by Dr. Brinton, and called the fl/a/am O/um, that warfare began the movement across the central prairies in Indiana and Ohio, and that subsequently the Alleghanies were crossed, at which point the Shawnee and Nanticoke went south. The main migration kept on eastward ultimately reaching the Atlantic ocean and settling down on the rivers of eastern Pennsylvania and in New Jersey. This accounts well enough for the Delawares, the neighbors of the Chesapeake bay tribes on the north, but it tells us little about the further movements and whereabouts of the Nanticoke in whom we are now interested. That they occupied the country about the upper Chesapeake region weknow by the fact that at the time of European contact these bands became known under the name of Nanticoke and appear to have formed a confederacy with the Nanticoke chief or emperor, as he was called by the Marylanders, at its head. A branch of this division separating from the main stream passed to the western shore of the bayand occupied the region between it and the Potomac, acqumng the name of Conoy, but nevertheless retaining its political affiliations with the Nanticoke. The dialect of the Conoy was not recorded in those days so we have no means of knowing accurately in how far it differed from that of the Nanticoke proper. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Indians of Manhattan Island and Vicinity There is no subject which makes a more forceful appeal to the student, the historian, or even the general reader, than that of the native inhabitants of what is now Greater New York; yet there is no subject upon which it is more difficult to obtain information, for our Colonial ancestors have left us but few accounts of their observations, and these are in tomes that are rare and difficult of access. The aborigines themselves have so nearly passed into oblivion, that no help can be obtained from their scattered and degenerate remnants in exile in the west, so that we must turn to two sources for our knowledge; the writings of the first white settlers, already mentioned, and the archaeological remains, the imperishable objects of stone, clay, bone and antler, which the vanished red men have left behind them on their ancient dwelling places. The writings of the Colonists tell us that in appearance the Manhattans and their neighbors were tall and well-built, with black hair and eyes and not unpleasing faces. Their disposition is noted as mild, except when aroused, when they are said to have been very greedy of vengeance. The men shaved their heads, or rather burned off their hair with hot stones, leaving often a standing roach of stiff black hair two or three inches high and as many broad, running from the forehead to the nape of the neck, and the lock which hung from the crown was generally allowed to grow much longer. This was the famous scalplock, which the warrior cultivated in defiance of the enemy, who might take it if he could. Sometimes they wore a roach of red dyed deer hair, exactly similar to those worn by the Sauk, Fox, Menomini, and other tribes of the Central West today. Our Indians did not wear the feather war-bonnet so characteristic of the Sioux and other tribes of the Great Plains, and which is now always placed upon the Indians in the conventional drawings picturing the sale of Manhattan Island. The Manhattans and their neighbors, unlike the Indians west and north of them, wore no shirts or coats. Instead, they covered the upper parts of their bodies with robes made of dressed deer leather, of wolf, wildcat, or bear fur, or of the shimmering feathers of the wild turkey, neatly attached to a netted fabric. So closely and carefully were these feathers applied that they are said to have shed the rain. The men also wore loin cloths or breechelouts of dressed leather, and leggings and moccasins of the same material. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Nipmuck Indians The territory originally comprising the old town of Worcester included, besides that of the present City of Worcester, the whole town of Holden which was set off in 1740, and the northeast quarter of Auburn which was set off in 1778, the latter section including the old Common where the Auburn Church and Town Hall now stand. To this original territory the first inhabitants, the Indians, gave the name of Quinsigamond, from the name of the lake bounding it on the east, with its numerous aliases, Quansigamaug, Quonsicamug, Quansigamog, etc., etc., meaning in the Indian dialect, "fishing place for pickerel." This is one of the earliest places in the interior of New England to which the attention of the first settlers from the seaboard or coast was directed, towards the west. Plymouth, the oldest New England town, was settled on the arrival of the Pilgrims in the Mayflower, in the bleak month of December, 1620. Within ten years from that date a large number of new towns, including Weymouth, Braintree, Salem, Charlestown, Lynn, Boston, Roxbury, Watertown, Dorchester, Cambridge, Medford, along the eastern coast, had been settled or incorporated, and then movements began toward the interior. Settlements began at Concord in 1635, Sudbury in 1638, Lancaster in 1643, and Marlboro in 1654. Lancaster, the oldest town in Worcester County, was incorporated in 1654, Mendon in 1667, and Brookfield in 1673, Worcester ranking the fourth in age or time of first settlement of the towns in this county.
