Book Indianland and Wonderland Classic Reprint

Download or read book Indianland and Wonderland Classic Reprint written by Olin Dunbar Wheeler and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-07-16 with total page 98 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Indianland and Wonderland What then is the preventive, in great measure, to future difficulty? Travel, interstate and intersectional travel, based on ardent patriotism. Sink first State selfishness, and recognize the fact that what benefits the whole benefits a part. Then let the people of the South travel in the North. Let those of the Pacific Coast go and view the sea coast resorts of the Atlantic, and the nooks and corners of historic New England. The sturdy Northmen of the region of the Great Lakes, the Dakotas, and Montana make acquaintance with the genial clime of Florida, of New Mexico, of California. And above all let the thousands who throng over Europe, spend their ducats in viewing the wonders of the unrivaled Yellowstone Park, gazing upon the snow-crowned head of Mount Tacoma, cruising along the glacial shores of scenic Alaska; while those of the East, leave the valleys and glens of New York and New Eng land, and hie themselves to the life-giving air of the Minnesota Lake Park region, ride over the Montana cattle-plains, or steam o'er the Kootenai Lakes, the gorge-like Lake Chelan, or the lovely Lake Pend d'oreille. In a general way the country tributary to the Northern Pacific Rail road may be segregated into three grand divisions. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Sketches of Wonderland: A Land of Rolling Plains, Boundless Grain Fields, Sculptured Lands, Alpine Lakes, Mining Camps, Indian Life, Dancing Rivers, Thriving Villages, Trackless Forests, Growing Cities, Lofty Mountains, Penetrated by the Northern Pacific Railroad Mounds and hills abound in various parts of the city, affording a landscape unrivaled. The Mississippi River winds through the city, and forms, with its white sandstone bluffs and tree-clad hills, a very important feature of this landscape. Minneapolis stands upon ground more level and regular than does its sister city. It is much better laid out, with broader streets, and has many fine parks. The Mississippi also cuts it in twain, but being utilized for its great flour and saw mills, loses most of its scenic attraction. This is atoned for by Lakes Harriet and Calhoun, which form a resort frequented by large numbers of people, and as beautiful as popular. The railroad follows the east bank of the Mississippi, after leaving these cities, to Little Falls, a manufacturing place of good size. En route, St. Cloud is passed. Beyond Little Falls the road winds through a pine and tamarac region quite diverse from the open country along the river. Download or read book Providing for the People written by Robert J. Bigart and published by University of Oklahoma Press. This book was released on 2020-08-13 with total page 379 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The years between 1875 and 1910 saw a revolution in the economy of the Flathead Reservation, home to the Salish and Kootenai Indians. In 1875 the tribes had supported themselves through hunting—especially buffalo—and gathering. Thirty-five years later, cattle herds and farming were the foundation of their economy. Providing for the People tells the story of this transformation. Author Robert J. Bigart describes how the Salish and Kootenai tribes overcame daunting odds to maintain their independence and integrity through this dramatic transition—how, relying on their own initiatives and labor, they managed to adjust and adapt to a new political and economic order. Major changes in the Flathead Reservation economy were accompanied by the growing power of the Flathead Indian Agent. Tribal members neither sought nor desired the new order of things, but as Bigart makes clear, they never stopped fighting to maintain their economic independence and self-support. The tribes did not receive general rations and did not allow the government to take control of their food supply. Instead, most government aid was bartered in exchange for products used in running the agency. Providing for the People presents a deeply researched, finely detailed account of the economic and diplomatic strategies that distinguished the Flathead Reservation Indians at a time of overwhelming and complex challenges to Native American tribes and traditions.
