Download or read book The United States Subnational Relations with Divided China written by Czeslaw Tubilewicz and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2021-05-23 with total page 195 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book examines US subnational engagement in foreign relations, or paradiplomacy, with China and Taiwan from 1949 to 2020. As an alternative diplomatic history of the United States’ relations with divided China, it offers an in-depth chronological and thematic discussion of state and local communities’ responses to the China-Taiwan sovereignty conflict and their impact on US diplomacy. The book explains why paradiplomacy matters not only in the ‘low politics’ of economic and cultural cooperation, but also in the ‘high politics’ of diplomatic recognition. Presenting case studies of US states and cities developing policies towards divided China that paralleled, clashed or aligned with those pursued by federal agencies, it also identifies Chinese and Taiwanese objectives and strategies deployed when competing for US subnational ties. Conceptually, the book builds upon Constructivism, redefining paradiplomacy as an institutional fact, reflective of subnational identities and interests, rather than as a subnational pursuit of foreign markets, driven by objective economic forces. Featuring new empirical evidence and a novel conceptual framework for paradiplomacy, The United States’ Subnational Relations with Divided China will be a useful resource for students and scholars of US foreign policy, the politics of China and Taiwan, paradiplomacy and international relations.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: “A fine volume on the moral meaning and function of philanthropy…makes the case that philanthropy is essential to democratic society.”—Choice Philanthropy has existed in various forms in all cultures and civilizations throughout history, yet most people know little about it and its distinctive place in our lives. Why does philanthropy exist? Why do people so often turn to philanthropy when we want to make the world a better place? In essence, what is philanthropy? These fundamental questions are tackled in this engaging and original book. Written by one of the founding figures in the field of philanthropic studies, Robert L. Payton, and his former student sociologist Michael P. Moody, Understanding Philanthropy presents a new way of thinking about the meaning and mission of philanthropy. Weaving together accessible theoretical explanations with fascinating examples of philanthropic action, this book advances key scholarly debates about philanthropy and offers practitioners a way of explaining the rationale for their nonprofit efforts.

This book was released on 2019-07-01 with total page 222 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The beginning of a new era in Indiana University football starts with the arrival of head coach Tom Allen. After revolutionizing IU's defense, Allen has the opportunity to stage a Hoosier comeback. But can Allen make the most of this opportunity? And who are the compelling figures poised to make it happen? In The Quest for Indiana University Football Glory, veteran sports writer Pete DiPrimio showcases exclusive coverage of the meetings, practices, games, players, coaches, and gatherings that the public rarely sees. He also reveals the surprising story of how Allen, the son of a successful Indiana high school coach, became the head coach after delivering a quality defense—something no Hoosier defensive coordinator has done in a generation. He also shows Allen's connection to IU glory past, from Bill Mallory's record-setting run, to Lee Corso's Holiday Bowl surprise to the Rose Bowl opportunity no one expected. Focused on an in-depth look at the rookie season under Allen, The Quest for Indiana University Football Glory brings readers into the locker room during the rebirth of Hoosier football and highlights the struggles and successes as the coaches and players fight to rebuild the program and reinvent IU football.
