Book Is The Holocaust Unique Perspectives On Comparative Genocide

Download or read book Is The Holocaust Unique Perspectives On Comparative Genocide written by Alan S. Rosenbaum and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2019-03-06 with total page 303 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Evaluating the Jewish Holocaust is by no means a simple matter, and one of the most controversial questions for academics is whether there have been any historical parallels for it. Have Armenians, Gypsies, American Indians, or others undergone a comparable genocide? In this fiercely controversial volume, distinguished scholars offer new discussions of this question. Presenting a wide range of strongly held views, they provide no easy consensus. Some critics contend that if the Holocaust is seen as fundamentally different in kind from other genocides or mass deaths, the suffering of other persecuted groups will be diminished. Others argue that denying the uniqueness of the Holocaust will trivialize it. Alan S. Rosenbaum's introductions provide a much-needed context for readers to come to terms with this multi-dimensional dispute, to help them understand why it has recently intensified, and to enable them to appreciate what universal lessons might be gleaned from studying the Holocaust. This volume makes an important contribution to our comprehension of one of the defining events of modern history. It should be essential reading for scholars, students, and general readers interested in the Holocaust and its relationship to other instances of politically inspired mass murder.

Book Feminist Perspectives on Law and Theory

Download or read book Feminist Perspectives on Law and Theory written by Janice Richardson and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2013-03-04 with total page 459 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: What is the link between the way in which women are viewed as an aberration within law - such that pregnant women initially had to be compared with sick men to claim unfair dismissal - and the view of women as monstrous within philosophy? This book uses the failure of women to fit within male models of both law and theory as a way to rethink legal questions, including the meaning of equality, freedom, justice and citizenship. This includes concern about the way in which queer theory and critical race theory - as well as issues of class - intersect with feminist theory today. It also raises issues about the relationship between political theory and practice and the productive intersection between debates within law, philosophy and feminism. This collection of essays on feminist legal theory therefore provides an interdisciplinary approach, drawn not only from law and philosophy, but also from cultural and womens studies. Feminism may still be on the margins of both law and philosophy, yet it has the ability to disrupt both. This book moves beyond a feminist critique of existing frameworks to the constructive project of reworking theory from within. It goes beyond debates of traditional jurisprudence to draw its tools from the growing body of work on feminist philosophy - including the writings of Luce Irigaray, Drucilla Cornell and Christine Battersby - which intersect both contemporary continental philosophy and critical legal theory.

Book Philosophical Perspectives on Fashion

Download or read book Philosophical Perspectives on Fashion written by Giovanni Matteucci and published by Bloomsbury Publishing. This book was released on 2016-12-01 with total page 300 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Philosophical Perspectives on Fashion places philosophical approaches at the heart of contemporary fashion studies. Considering the mutual relationships between aesthetics, modern society and culture, fashion and the fine arts, and the way these relationships have influenced and shaped our views on identity and taste, this ground-breaking book also explores the various intellectual and cultural movements that inform how people dress. In the context of the most recent debates, the leading fashion and philosophy scholars contributing to this volume refer to and apply theories posed by key thinkers of the modern and contemporary age, from Darwin and Wittgenstein to Husserl and Goodman, in order to answer questions such as: What is the essence of fashion and the reasons behind its fascination? What is 'anti-fashion'? What or who do we imitate when we 'follow' fashion? What is fashion criticism and what should it be? Anyone studying or interested in fashion, philosophy or art will find this book a rich source of ideas, insight and information. Philosophical Perspectives on Fashion is a valuable contribution to contemporary fashion theory and aesthetics, one that revitalizes the way we look at the form, purpose and meaning of fashion and aesthetic experience.

A comprehensive exposition of the law relating to birth control, abortion, pregnancy, childbirth, surrogacy and assisted conception is accompanied by an exploration of some of the complex ethical dilemmas that emerge when one of the most intimate areas of human life is subjected to regulatory control. Throughout the book, two principal themes recur. First, particular emphasis is placed upon the special difficulties that arise in regulating new technological intervention in all aspects of the reproductive process. Second, the concept of reproductive autonomy is both interrogated and defended. This book offers a readable and engaging account of the complex relationships between law, technology and reproduction. It will be useful for lecturers and students taking medical law or ethics courses. It should also be of interest to anyone with a more general interest in women's bodies and the law, or with the profound regulatory consequences of new technologies.
