Book Indian Stories Classic Reprint

Download or read book Indian Stories Classic Reprint written by Cicero Newell and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-06-11 with total page 208 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Indian Stories Many years ago I lived among the Indians and knew them well. They were very different from the Indians of to-day. It would be hard now to find any Indians who are as close to the original traditions as were those old friends of mine. I want to give the boys and girls of to-day a chance to see the Indian as I saw him, and to know how he lived and what he thought. It is a pleasure to tell this story; for I came to love the Indian, and I had great respect for him and for his manner of life. When I first lived among the Dakotas, they were still strongly prejudiced in favor of the old ways, tradi tions and customs. They looked back-with regret upon earlier times, when they lived, unmolested, the wild, free life of the forests. They said that their ancestors were better men than they, because their ancestors lived closer to the Great Spirit, by whom the actions of all Indians were guided. I give the stories as they were told to me by old men who knew and loved the old-time ways, and who wanted to give me the real facts because they saw that I respected their customs and believed in them. In these stories I share with the boys and girls of to-day, who can never know the old-fashioned Indians, my recollections of a busy and happy life among them, at a time when they had not unlearned all the old customs. Book The Indian Classic Reprint

Download or read book The Indian Classic Reprint written by George Bird Grinnell and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-12-30 with total page 172 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Indian This volume might be called one of recollections, for in it have been set down many memories of Indian life. The scenes described I have witnessed with my own eyes; the stories related are those which have been told me by the Indians themselves. These stories are introduced freely because the con crete example conveys a clearer idea of an event than an abstract statement, and because the story of the Indian should not be told wholly from the point of view of a race alien in thought, feeling, and culture. No narrative about any people can do them justice if written by one who is not in some degree in sympathy with them, and acquainted with their ways of thought and with the motives which govern them. Before an intelligent account of it can be given, the stranger race must be comprehended. Long association with Indi ans enables a white man ultimately to share their thought and feelings; and he who has reached this point understands the Indian. He understands that the red man is a savage and has savage qualities, yet he sees also that the most impressive characteristic of the Indian is his humanity. For in his Simplicity, his vanity, his sensitiveness to ridicule, his desire for re venge, and his fear of the supernatural, he is a child and acts like one. Book American Indian Stories Legends and Other Writings

Download or read book American Indian Stories Legends and Other Writings written by Zitkala-Sa and published by Penguin. This book was released on 2003-02-25 with total page 330 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A thought-provoking collection of searing prose from a Sioux woman that covers race, identity, assimilation, and perceptions of Native American culture Zitkala-Sa wrestled with the conflicting influences of American Indian and white culture throughout her life. Raised on a Sioux reservation, she was educated at boarding schools that enforced assimilation and was witness to major events in white-Indian relations in the late 1800s and early 1900s. Tapping her troubled personal history, Zitkala-Sa created stories that illuminate the tragedy and complexity of the American Indian experience. In evocative prose laced with political savvy, she forces new thinking about the perceptions, assumptions, and customs of both Sioux and white cultures and raises issues of assimilation, identity, and race relations that remain compelling today.

"My friends, I must not spoil your dance. Oh, you would not care to see if you only knew what is in my blanket. Sing on! dance on! I must not show you what I carry on my back," answered Iktomi, nudging his own sides with his elbows. This reply broke up the ring entirely. Now all the ducks crowded about Iktomi. "We must see what you carry! We must know what is in your blanket!" they shouted in both his ears. Some even brushed their wings against the mysterious bundle. Nudging himself again, wily Iktomi said, "My friends, 't is only a pack of songs I carry in my blanket." "Oh, then let us hear your songs!" cried the curious ducks. At length Iktomi consented to sing his songs. With delight all the ducks flapped their wings and cried together, "Hoye! hoye!" Iktomi, with great care, laid down his bundle on the ground. "I will build first a round straw house, for I never sing my songs in the open air," said he. Quickly he bent green willow sticks, planting both ends of each pole into[...]".

Download or read book Indian Tales Classic Reprint written by Rudyard Kipling and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-09-16 with total page 758 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Indian Tales by Rudyard Kipling is a collection of short stories that revolve around the Indian subcontinent. India had a special place in Kipling's heart as is evident from his writings since he spent many of his formative years in the country. This work is a reflection of his deep rooted understanding of the many different facets of the country. Indian Tales is a mammoth collection running into many pages with a little less than forty stories to choose from. It showcases some of Kipling's best known work. The essence of the stories found in this volume is that the central character of Kipling's stories is not just the main protagonist but India itself. His views on the socio-cultural ethos of the country and its people as well as the complex relationship between the British empire and native Indians is beautifully captured within the many pages of this book. It would be difficult to single out specific stories but some are worth mentioning to discerning readers. In this collection Kipling showcases different styles of writing including stories like the Phantom Rickshaw and the Man Who Would Be King which are eerie and other-worldly. The stories revolving around the three characters of Mulvaney, Ortheris, and Learoyd are also highly entertaining as found in The Three Musketeers and Private Learoyd's Story. Indian Tales is the perfect starting point for readers as yet deprived of the genius of Rudyard Kipling while it continues to be a treasure trove of moving narratives ensconced within the enigmatic world of India by of one of literature's evergreen legends.
