I therefore carefully collected and preserved every thing pertaining to the history of the county, within my reach, with the intention of publishing such a work when I thought that the proper time had arrived. During the present almost universal depression of business would seem anything but the proper time for its publication, yet, from force of necessity, I was compelled to issue now, if ever. This I do at the risk of a severe loss to myself, and with a knowledge that imperfections may thereby mar its pages that might otherwise have been prevented, by taking longer time in its preparation. The present work has been pursued and carried through under many disadvantages, and in the face of many difficulties. I did not undertake the compilation of the book until the middle of January, 1877, and my pecuniary circumstances were such that I could not throw up my situa tion, and therefore evenings were the only time left for labor. But these were faithfully employed, and as a result, in less than three months time, evening work, the history or winneshiek county was completed. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Early Indian History on the Susquehanna: Based on Rare and Original Documents, and Accompanied A copy of the date of 1624 was produced during this trial It was claimed that in the Maryland charter the lands granted Lord Baltimore were so bounded by the help of Capt Smith's said book and map of Virginia, and no other, for that map only, and no other then extant, has all the names agreeable to those mentioned and used in said patent Hence, Smiths map helped to cradle Delaware, and played its part in determining the famous "Mason and Dixon's Line." It was certainly the first effort to map any part of our present State, Penria Arch. N, S, vol, vii 315, 322, and 340.) It is proper here also to mention the other publications of Smith and his contemporaries, which in any way bear upon the Susquehanna exploration. "The True Relation, etc., London, 1608, has nineteen unpaged leaves and gives an account of the colony covering the first thirteen months from April 26, 1607. This has been reprinted with notes by Charles Deane, Boston, 1864. The vessel that took the manuscript to England left the same day that Smith started on his first voyage up the bay, and hence it contains nothing about that discovery. As early as 1612, there was also published at Oxford a tract called "A Map of Virginia," etc., with a description of the country by Smith, 48 pages, and an appendix by other writers, 110 pages. The map and that part of this Oxford, tract which was written by Smith himself, was republished, with but few variations, in the "Generall Historie," pages 21 to 96; but the part written by the others was much changed and amplified. The "True Relation" is not thus used in making up the "General Historie," because, as some suppose, it could not be made to fit the story of Pocahontas saving his brains from the murderous club of Powhatan, which first appeared in that book. What Smith has told us of the Susquehannocks, was, therefore, substantially written and mapped in the Oxford tract. It appears that this map, and the "annexed relation of the countries and nations," was sent home by Smith soon after his re turn from the Susquehanna explorations in 1608, but was not printed until 1612, which was a couple of years after his return to England, and its publication must have passed under his eye. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Nipmuck Indians The territory originally comprising the old town of Worcester included, besides that of the present City of Worcester, the whole town of Holden which was set off in 1740, and the northeast quarter of Auburn which was set off in 1778, the latter section including the old Common where the Auburn Church and Town Hall now stand. To this original territory the first inhabitants, the Indians, gave the name of Quinsigamond, from the name of the lake bounding it on the east, with its numerous aliases, Quansigamaug, Quonsicamug, Quansigamog, etc., etc., meaning in the Indian dialect, "fishing place for pickerel." This is one of the earliest places in the interior of New England to which the attention of the first settlers from the seaboard or coast was directed, towards the west. Plymouth, the oldest New England town, was settled on the arrival of the Pilgrims in the Mayflower, in the bleak month of December, 1620. Within ten years from that date a large number of new towns, including Weymouth, Braintree, Salem, Charlestown, Lynn, Boston, Roxbury, Watertown, Dorchester, Cambridge, Medford, along the eastern coast, had been settled or incorporated, and then movements began toward the interior. Settlements began at Concord in 1635, Sudbury in 1638, Lancaster in 1643, and Marlboro in 1654. Lancaster, the oldest town in Worcester County, was incorporated in 1654, Mendon in 1667, and Brookfield in 1673, Worcester ranking the fourth in age or time of first settlement of the towns in this county. At a meeting held September 3d, 1850, the Committee presented the following report, and the recommendations therein contained were adopted by the Society. The Committee appointed February 5th, 1850, by the Connecticut Historical Society, to examine a manuscript history of the Indian tribes of Connecticut, prepared by Mr. John W. De Forest, and to give an opinion whether it should be published under the patronage of the Society, would respectfully report: That they have read the manuscript referred to, with as much attention as time and circumstances would allow, and find in it abundant evidence of labor and research, and a collection of facts which they think highly important for a full elucidation of the history of the State. They have not thought it necessary to look at the authorities on which Mr. De Forest relies for his statements, as it is understood that he wishes to be considered alone responsible for the facts and opinions detailed in his work. The Committee recommend that the Society should encourage Mr. De Forest's undertaking, and permit his work to be published under their patronage. This latter portion of the book is taken from Loskiel's His tory of the Moravian Missions in North America, in which it is intended to follow his orthography as well as to reprint his language largely, throughout that part of the work. A considerable part of the first six chap ters of this book had been put into print by the author, previously, but considerable additions and alterations were made to them, and since by retaining them, an account of the Indians of Western Connecticut, upon a general plan of tribal union, could be secured, as had not heretofore been obtained, it was thought to be desirable that the whole should be presented here as a monogram, or brief historical outline of the tribes who inhabited the territory mentioned.
