Book Indian Education for All

Download or read book Indian Education for All written by John P. Hopkins and published by Teachers College Press. This book was released on 2020 with total page 217 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: John P. Hopkins critiques recent efforts to reform Indigenous education in public schools. He centers his critique on Montana State’s innovative and bold multicultural education policy called Indian Education for All (IEFA), and demonstrates why Indigenous education reforms must decolonize the curriculum and pedagogy to address the academic inequalities facing Native students. Using tribal critical race theory and culturally sustaining and revitalizing pedagogy, Indian Education for All proposes a shift in the ways teacher candidates learn about Indigenous education and instruct Native students. It explains why teachers and schools need to privilege Indigenous knowledge and explicitly integrate decolonization concepts into teaching and learning to address the academic gaps in Native education. This book will also help non-Native educators to engage in productive and authentic conversations with tribal communities about what Indigenous education reform should entail. “A must-read for educational justice across Indian Country.” —K. Tsianina Lomawaima, School of Social Transformation, Arizona State University “This important, highly accessible book provides a needed shift in stance whereby anti-colonialism becomes a vital education project for all.” —Teresa L. McCarty, GF Kneller Chair in Education and Anthropology, University of California, Los Angeles “Hopkins offers important insights into the problems of paradigms of inclusion as an approach to educational policy change.” —Megan Bang, Northwestern University

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: What might we learn from Native American experiences with schools to help us forge a new vision of the democratic ideal—one that respects, protects, and promotes diversity and human rights? In this fascinating portrait of American Indian education over the past century, the authors critically evaluate U.S. education policies and practices, from early 20th-century federal incarnations of colonial education through the contemporary standards movement. In the process, they refute the notion of “dangerous cultural difference” and point to the promise of diversity as a source of national strength. Featuring the voices and experiences of Native individuals that official history has silenced and pushed aside, this book: Proposes the theoretical framework of the “safety zone” to explain shifts in federal educational policies and practices over the past century.Offers lessons learned from Indigenous America’s fight to protect and assert educational self-determination.Rebuts stereotypes of American Indians as one-dimensional learners.Argues that the maintenance of Indigenous languages is a fundamental human right.Examines the standards movement as the most recent attempt to control the “dangerous difference” allegedly posed by students of color, poor and working-class students, and English language learners in U.S. schools. “To Remain an Indian chronicles the resistance, resilience, and imagination of generations of Native American educators. It is a profoundly moving book that highlights the opportunities, and ethical responsibility, that educators have to expand student identities and challenge coercive relations of power in the wider society.” —Jim Cummins, University of Toronto “A must read for both seasoned and young scholars, practitioners, and others interested in culturally based education, including the importance of Indigenous languages.” —John Tippeconnic III, Director, American Indian Leadership Program, Pennsylvania State University “The development of young children’s logico-mathematical knowledge is at the heart of this text. Similar to the first edition, this revision provides a rich theoretical foundation as well as child-centered activities and principles of teaching that support problem solving, communicating, reasoning, making connections, and representing mathematical ideas. In this great resource for preservice and in-service elementary teachers, Professor Kamii continues to help us understand the implications of Piagetian theory.” —Frances R. Curcio, New York University

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: It is estimated that between 90 and 95 percent of all Indian students in the United States are in the public school system. That is approximately 400,000 Indian students. Yet, when we talk about Indian education, it often seems that we tend to overlook the programs affecting Indian and Alaska Native students in our public schools. Many leaders and advocates for Indian education know that a quality education system can help lift communities out of poverty and many of the symptoms associated with poverty. In the face of suicide clusters, increasing domestic violence and growing instances of self-harm and drug addition, students show up at school every day and it is our job to do the best we can for them. Improving educational opportunities can be a starting point for addressing many of the issues that are so prevalent throughout much of Indian Country. We need better approaches to realize stronger, healthier, more stable and better-educated families and communities. This means that HUD housing, USDA, Head Start and the Department of Justice must be at the table with the Indian Health Service, tribal governments and tribal colleges.

Book Native Presence and Sovereignty in College

Download or read book Native Presence and Sovereignty in College written by Amanda R. Tachine and published by Teachers College Press. This book was released on 2022 with total page 225 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: What is at stake when our young people attempt to belong to a college environment that reflects a world that does not want them for who they are? In this compelling book, Navajo scholar Amanda Tachine takes a personal look at 10 Navajo teenagers, following their experiences during their last year in high school and into their first year in college. It is common to think of this life transition as a time for creating new connections to a campus community, but what if there are systemic mechanisms lurking in that community that hurt Native students' chances of earning a degree? Tachine describes these mechanisms as systemic monsters and shows how campus environments can be sites of harm for Indigenous students due to factors that she terms monsters' sense of belonging, namely assimilating, diminishing, harming the worldviews of those not rooted in White supremacy, heteropatriarchy, capitalism, racism, and Indigenous erasure. This book addresses the nature of those monsters and details the Indigenous weapons that students use to defeat them. Rooted in love, life, sacredness, and sovereignty, these weapons reawaken students' presence and power. Book Features: Introduces an Indigenous methodological approach called story rug that demonstrates how research can be expanded to encompass all our senses. Weaves together Navajo youths' stories of struggle and hope in educational settings, making visible systemic monsters and Indigenous weaponry. Draws from Navajo knowledge systems as an analytic tool to connect history to present and future realities. Speaks to the contemporary situation of Native peoples, illuminating the challenges that Native students face in making the transition to college. Examines historical and contemporary realities of Navajo systemic monsters, such as the financial hardship monster, deficit (not enough) monster, failure monster, and (in)visibility monster. Offers insights for higher education institutions that are seeking ways to create belonging for diverse students.

Book excerpt: About 41,000 students are educated in Bureau of Indian Education (BIE) schools each year. The Department of Defense Education Activity (DoDEA) and the BIE are the only two federally-operated school systems operating in the United States. While they have no schools in Indian Country, the Department of Defense has approximately the same number of schools as the BIE. Yet their proposed replacement school construction budget for next year is $315 million, compared to the BIE's request of $2 million. Many Indian children excel at school, grow up to become teachers, business owners, doctors, lawyers, and government leaders. The Federal Government has important responsibilities in educating Indian children. But what we do not see is consistent, successful academic achievement at the BIE schools. It is critical that we make sure BIE students are getting the support they need to succeed in the classroom.
