Book Environment Natural Resources and the Indian Economy

Download or read book Environment Natural Resources and the Indian Economy written by Amarendra Das and published by . This book was released on 2014 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Natural and environmental resources are productive assets in a nation's economy and the basis of a country's economic activity. Economic activity, in turn, affects the quantity and quality of a country's natural and environmental resources. Mining, lumbering, manufacturing, fishing, and a host of other economic activities change the stock of natural resources, which calls for appropriate trade-off between the needs of the present and future generations. However, environmental pollution is one of the major problems faced by the world community, especially in cities of the developing countries which have experienced an unbridled growth of population, urbanization, and industrialization. In India - the second most populous and seventh largest country in the world - environmental problems can be classified into two broad categories: (a) those arising from conditions of poverty and under-development, and (b) those arising as negative effects of the very process of development. This volume of research papers - authored by experts in the field of environmental economics - provides deep insights into the linkages between development and the environment in India. The book suggests remedial measures for environmentally sustainable economic policies in the country. [Subject: India Studies, Economics, Environmental Studies, Development Studies]Ã?Â?Ã?Â?

Book The Economics of Sustainable Development

Download or read book The Economics of Sustainable Development written by Surender Kumar and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2009-06-10 with total page 297 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book highlights methodological approaches for the economics of sustainable development and brings together recent empirical work done in India, especially by Dr. Surender Kumar and Dr. Shunsuke Managi. Various chapters in this book use Indian data to show the very wide applicability of methodologies in the theory of production for dealing with many empirical issues of environmentally sustainable development in a developing country. I congratulate the authors for the time and effort devoted to compiling this very useful reference on the subject and the publishers for publishing this volume. The methodologies of cost functions, distance functions, and production fu- tions have been used in many recent studies and in the studies reported in this book for environmental valuation. Environmental valuation is required for designing policy instruments like pollution taxes for sustainable development and for meas- ing green GDP. The UN methodology of integrated environmental and economic accounting provides ways of measuring the cost of maintaining environmental resources at sustainable levels or the maintenance cost for estimating green GDP. Some of the chapters in this book show that the methodology of distance functions could be used for estimating the cost of environmentally sustainable development.

Book The Impact of Business Environment and Economic Geography on Plant level Productivity

Download or read book The Impact of Business Environment and Economic Geography on Plant level Productivity written by Somik V. Lall and published by World Bank Publications. This book was released on 2005 with total page 53 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "The authors' analysis of manufacturing plants sampled from India's major industrial centers shows large productivity gaps across cities. The gaps partly reflect differences in agglomeration economies and in market access. However, they are also explained to a greater extent by differences in the degree of labor regulation and in the severity of power shortages. This is an indication that governments can help narrow regional disparities in industrial growth by fostering the "right business environment" in locations where industry might otherwise be held back by powerful forces of economic geography. There is indeed a pattern in the data whereby geographically disadvantaged cities seem to compensate partially for their natural disadvantage by having a better business environment than more geographically advantaged locations. Download or read book Monsoon Economies written by Tirthankar Roy and published by MIT Press. This book was released on 2022-04-12 with total page 231 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: How interventions to mitigate climate-caused poverty and inequality in India came at a cost to environmental sustainability. In the monsoon regions of South Asia, the rainy season sustains life but brings with it the threat of floods, followed by a long stretch of the year when little gainful work is possible and the threat of famine looms. Beginning in the late nineteenth century, a series of interventions by Indian governments and other actors mitigated these conditions, enabling agricultural growth, encouraging urbanization, and bringing about a permanent decrease in death rates. But these actions—largely efforts to ensure wider access to water—came at a cost to environmental sustainability. In Monsoon Economies, Tirthankar Roy explores the interaction between the environment and the economy in the emergence of modern India. Roy argues that the tropical monsoon climate makes economic and population growth contingent on water security. But in a water-scarce world, the means used to increase water security not only created environmental stresses but also made political conflict more likely. Roy investigates famine relief, the framing of a seasonal “water famine,” and the concept of public trust in water; the political movements that challenged socially sanctioned forms of deprivation; water as a public good; water quality in cities; the shift from impounding river water in dams and reservoirs to exploring groundwater; the seasonality of a monsoon economy; and economic lessons from India for a world facing environmental degradation.
