Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Indian Corn As I_ treat him different from many, what I shall say may be an innovation upon the practice of the general farmer. In raising corn it is very essential to me that the crow accompany me; he is my friend, and I form a copartnership with him, nature and myself find the capital and he puts in work in offset. I say the farmers' friend, a friend to the agriculturist. I never disturb him to injure. Though he has his faults, yet his virtues far exceed his vices. His music does not strike the musical ear pleasantly, yet remember he is a scavenger, a glutton; don' t forget his consumption of the grasshop per, the grub, the cut-worm, the potato bug. The decaying animals; please give him credit for all this. Now, says the crow-hater. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Download or read book Some Notes on the History Varieties and Statistics of Indian Corn written by Samuel Lane Boardman and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-04 with total page 28 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Some Notes on the History, Varieties and Statistics of Indian Corn: Read as an Introduction to a Discussion on Indian Corn and Its Culture, Before the Farmer's Convention at Newport, February 21st, 1877 It was decided by the Committee on Topics, at the last session of the Board of Agriculture, that Indian Corn should furnish the leading subject of thought and discussion at this meeting. It was subdivided into four sections, which were given out for treatment to members of our Board - the first division, that relating to the history, varieties, chemical composition and statistics, having been assigned to myself. It is, I assure you, a broad and intricate theme, demanding for its satisfactory presentation greater ability than I have ever laid claim to; and in the time I am to occupy, I can only glance at the points involved. The gentlemen who are to follow me to-day and to-morrow, each have most important divisions of this subject to present to you; and they have indicated to me in the correspondence we have found it necessary to have upon the matter, that they each had the most difficult part of this great subject assigned to them - an evidence of the vastness of any one of the branches of our agriculture, which only presents itself in its magnitude and importance, whenever we sit down to thoughtfully and persistently study it. As for myself, I need to ask your indulgence beforehand, and if I make mistakes, you will be so good as to acknowledge I go astray in good company, and belong to a large and quite respectable portion of the community. And first, a few words concerning the name; which, as some writer has said, is called "Indian" because it did not come from India, - which may be reasonably doubted, however - and "corn" because it is not corn at all, but something else. Book The Story of Corn and the Westward Migration Classic Reprint

Download or read book The Story of Corn and the Westward Migration Classic Reprint written by Eugene Clyde Brooks and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-02-03 with total page 322 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Story of Corn and the Westward Migration The struggle of the human race for food has been and still is one of the great factors in the growth of civilization. Histories tell us of the progress of social institutions. Geographies analyze the world's food supply and describe in detail the areas that are most productive. Books on agriculture give us a study of the food plants and the best methods of securing the greatest returns from the land. But none of these texts makes it sufficiently clear to the youth of the country that the improvement in food plants and the productivity of the land are among the greatest factors in the building of a civilization. The purpose of The Story of Corn is to combine certain fundamental principles of geography and agriculture and treat them historically in order that the youth may appreciate the tremendous importance of agriculture in the history of the race. A complete history of agriculture would make a volume too large and too technical for grammar-grade or high-school pupils. Therefore the cereals, with special emphasis on Indian corn, have been chosen as the theme for this book. Book Report on the Use of Maize Indian Corn In Europe and on the Possibilities of Its Extension 1891 Classic Reprint

Download or read book Report on the Use of Maize Indian Corn In Europe and on the Possibilities of Its Extension 1891 Classic Reprint written by United States; Dept; Of Agriculture and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-06 with total page 44 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Report on the Use of Maize (Indian Corn) In Europe and on the Possibilities of Its Extension, 1891 In publishing for general information the following report of Special Agent C. J. Murphy, to whom I intrusted the duty of introducing American corn to the attention of the people of Europe as a human food, I have thought well, for the information of those interested, to supplement it with an article prepared by Dr. H. W. Wiley, Chief Chemist of this Department, on the food value and chemical composition of corn. I have also caused to be prepared in the Statistical Division an article upon the extension of foreign trade in Indian corn, of a general character, for which the records of that division afford special facilities, to which are appended various statistical tables which will enable the reader to form a just estimate of the extent and availability of our resources in the production of this important cereal. I desire to call special attention to two or three points in the matter which follows. In the first place, I wish to emphasize the necessity, indicated by Special Agent Murphy, for vigorously following up the efforts of this Department by the individual or combined efforts of parties interested in the trade in this product. The thought is also suggested by the chapter on "The Food Value of Maize" that this great American cereal is specially adapted, from its constituents, for use as a part of the dietary of the inhabitants of northern climates, who are unable to produce it on their own soil. Hence, if properly introduced and adopted by these people, we may reasonably look to them for a permanent market for a portion of our corn crop. Thirdly, in his observations on the extension of the foreign use of corn, the Statistician presents some features of special interest with reference to the availability of Indian corn as a part of the army rations - a matter of extraordinary importance for countries whoso conditions necessitate the maintenance of a large standing army. Peculiar interest attaches to these considerations from the fact that our special agent in Europe has already succeeded in interesting responsible officers of a foreign government in the matter from this point of view. This book was released on 2017-10-28 with total page 52 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Effects of Kerosene on the Germination and Growth of Indian Corn Grains immersed in kerosene for varying lengths of time were soaked in water for from one to twenty-four hours and then placed under appropriate conditions for germination. The results showed that soaking in running water for periods of from four to six hours was not injurious and in some instances seemed to be slightly benefi ciel. When soaked for longer periods injury, manifested dy a redue tion in the per cent of germination, became apparent. Irregularities in later growth seemed to appear more frequently among the kernels soaked even for the shorter periods than among the unsoaked kernels. Book Corn and Corn Growing Classic Reprint

Download or read book Corn and Corn Growing Classic Reprint written by Henry Agard Wallace and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-11-02 with total page 264 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Corn and Corn-Growing The Atlantic Coast farmers, from 1800 to 1840, made a real effort to get high yielding strains of corn. The farm papers of 1819 to 1822 tell of several instances of getting Maha (undoubtedly Omaha Indian) corn from Council Bluffs - now a part of Iowa. This corn was an eight-row soft corn type, and several of the eastern farmers claimed yields of more than 100 bushels to the acre. The Sioux yellow, ten to twelve-row flint corn was introduced from the west by several grow ers, and there were several introductions of a Canadian flint corn. These introductions, together with the local varieties, are probably found to some extent in all of our present-day varieties, and help to explain the heterogeneous nature of our present-day types. The Iowa State Agricultural Society report of 1858 says: A great. Many varieties of corn are cultivated, and it would be hard to tell which is the best, as farmers entertain different Opinions. Most of the varieties were dents, according to the report. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
