Book excerpt: This report evaluates the Observance of the Basel Core Principles for Effective Banking Supervision in India. It highlights that the supervision and regulation by the Reserve Bank of India remain strong and have improved in recent years. A key achievement is implementation of a risk-based supervisory approach that uses a complex supervisory assessment framework to guide the intensity of supervisory actions and the allocation of supervisory resources. Also, most of the Basel III framework has been implemented and cooperation arrangements, both domestically and cross-border, are now firmly in place. The system-wide asset quality review and the strengthening of prudential regulations in 2015 testify to the authorities’ commitment to transparency and a more accurate recognition of banking risks.

Book At Home Abroad

  • Author : Henry R. Nau
  • Publisher : Cornell University Press
  • Release : 2018-09-05
  • ISBN : 150172911X
  • Pages : 331 pages

Download or read book At Home Abroad written by Henry R. Nau and published by Cornell University Press. This book was released on 2018-09-05 with total page 331 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The United States has never felt at home abroad. The reason for this unease, even after the terrorist attacks of September 11, 2001, is not frequent threats to American security. It is America's identity. The United States, its citizens believe, is a different country, a New World of divided institutions and individualistic markets surviving in an Old World of nationalistic governments and statist economies. In this Old World, the United States finds no comfort and alternately tries to withdraw from it and reform it. America cycles between ambitious internationalist efforts to impose democracy and world order, and more nationalist appeals to trim multilateral commitments and demand that the European and Japanese allies do more. In At Home Abroad, Henry R. Nau explains that America is still unique but no longer so very different. All the industrial great powers in western Europe (and, arguably, also Japan) are now strong liberal democracies. A powerful and peaceful new world exists beyond America's borders and anchors America's identity, easing its discomfort and ending the cycle of withdrawal and reform. Nau draws on constructivist and realist perspectives to show how relative national identities interact with relative national power to define U.S. national interests. He provides fresh insights for U.S. grand strategy toward various countries. In Europe, the identity and power perspective advocates U.S. support for both NATO expansion to consolidate democratic identities in eastern Europe and concurrent, but separate, great-power cooperation with Russia in the United Nations. In Asia, this perspective recommends a shift of U.S. strategy from bilateralism to concentric multilateralism, starting with an emerging democratic security community among the United States, Japan, South Korea, Australia, New Zealand, India, and Taiwan, and progressively widening this community to include reforming ASEAN states and, if it democratizes, China. In the developing world, Nau's approach calls for balancing U.S. moral (identity) and material (power) commitments, avoiding military intervention for purely moral reasons, as in Somalia, but undertaking such intervention when material threats are immediate, as in Afghanistan, or material and moral stakes coincide, as in Kosovo.

Growing out of an international workshop organized by the Institute of Southeast Asian Studies in Singapore and the Centre of Asian Studies at the University of Hong Kong, this volume explores material, cultural and imaginative features of the immigrant communities and brings together these two important communities within a comparative framework.

Book At Home Abroad

Download or read book At Home Abroad written by John Bresnan and published by Equinox Publishing. This book was released on 2006 with total page 226 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In 1953, as part of the Eisenhower/Dulles response to Senator Joseph McCarthy's charges of security risks in its staff, John Bresnan was fired from the U.S. foreign service. This turned out to be a blessing is disguise as he was quickly hired by the Ford Foundation in its New York headquarters, and in 1961 was appointed Assistant Representative to Indonesia. Four years later, Bresnan was given another assignment: close the office. What follows is a personal recollection of the philanthropic work by the Ford Foundation during a critical period of development for the country. It details the Ford Foundation's successes and failures as well as his relationships with a wide array of characters: from John D. Rockefeller III to Soedjatmoko, from McGeorge Bundy to the Sultan of Yogyakarta. Based on extensive research in the archives of the Ford Foundation as well as personal files, At Home Abroad is an engaging insight into the inner workings of one of the largest philanthropic organizations and their mission in the developing world. This book should be required reading for anyone interested in the role of American philanthropy overseas. JOHN BRESNAN was Assistant Representative of the Ford Foundation in Indonesia from 1961 to 1965, Representative there from 1969 to 1973, and Head of the Office for Asia and the Pacific at Ford's headquarters in New York from 1973 to 1982. Since then, he has been a Senior Research Scholar at the Weatherhead East Asian Institute at Columbia University, where he has written and edited books on Indonesia, the Philippines, and Southeast Asia that were published by Columbia University Press, Princeton University Press, and the Council on Foreign Relations.

Book India s Middle Class

Download or read book India s Middle Class written by Christiane Brosius and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2012-06-12 with total page 391 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book examines the complexities of lifestyles of the upwardly mobile middle classes in India in the context of economic liberalisation in the new millennium, by analysing new social formations and aspirations, modes of consumption and ways of being in contemporary urban India. Rich in ethnographic material, the work is based on empirical case-studies, research material, and illustrations. Offering a model of how urban cosmopolitan India might be studied and understood in a transnational and transcultural context, the book takes the reader through three panoramic landscapes: new ‘world-class’ real estate advertising, a unique religious leisure site — the Akshardham Cultural Complex, and the world of themed weddings and beauty/wellness, all responses to India’s new middle classes’ tryst with cosmopolitanism. The work will be of particular interest to scholars and researchers in sociology, South Asian studies, media studies, anthropology and urban studies as also those interested in religion, performance and rituals, diaspora, globalisation and transnational migration.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Global Indian Diasporas discusses the relationship between South Asian emigrants and their homeland, the reproduction of Indian culture abroad, and the role of the Indian state in reconnecting emigrants to India. Focusing on the limits of the diaspora concept, rather than its possibilities, this volume presents new historical and anthropological research on South Asian emigrants worldwide. From a comparative perspective, examples of South Asian emigrants in Suriname, Mauritius, East Africa, Canada, and the United Kingdom are deployed in order to show that in each of these regions there are South Asian emigrants who do not fit into the Indian diaspora concept—raising questions about the effectiveness of the diaspora as an academic and sociological index, and presenting new and controversial insights in diaspora issues.
