Arny issued several formal reports, but this journal takes the reader behind the scenes--to the Utes and Apaches of the high mountain country, the Navajo of the desert, and the pueblo dwellers along the streams. His diary makes interesting reading for any Western buff, but it has special value to historians and ethnologists. Few men of his time had such high qualifications for the tasks he was given.
