Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "S. D. Muni's work is a significant contribution to the unfolding events of Sri Lanka's ethnic conflict which has been compiled from an Indian perspective. Muni also highlights the weaknesses of India's mediating process, which was prolonged without success. This is a tribute to his scholarship." --Siri Gamage in Journal of Contemporary Asia "Professor Muni's book represents a very important contribution to the history of India-Sri Lanka relations in the crucial period 1983 to 1990. This book is short on verbiage and seeks to concentrate on hard facts and analysis." --India Quarterly "Muni demonstrates how the various conflicts are intermeshed in South Asia and how internal conflicts can create bilateral or international tensions. Muni shows the often divergent assessments and the dilemmas of Indian foreign policy makers in dealing with the Sri Lankan crisis. At the same time he makes clear that the problem of balancing the dynamics of ethnic conflicts with national security concerns will remain on the agenda of Indian policy makers." --Christian Wagner in Internationales Asienforum "The overall treatment of the subject is very exhaustive, meticulous and systematic.... The book opens up a whole new perspective which has had treatment from journalists and other writers before Muni in a somewhat piecemeal manner. A good chronology of events is given with the author's own carefully arranged insights. Muni covers "the Indian perspective" with skill, highlighting many of its dimensions and variables. The book sheds new light on the chain of events leading up to the July agreement which was a watershed in Indo-Lanka relations. One other impressive task he has accomplished is the correction of incorrect facts relating to the conflict and Indian involvement whether they refer to the Sri Lankan or Indian side. A considerable degree of objectivity is achieved in the assessments and criticisms that Muni makes.... Muni's book fills a lacuna which existed in the copious volumes of work on the subject. Those interested in the subtle nature of South Asian diplomacy, defence relations, elite politics, roles of governments in resolving political conflicts exacerbated by cultural and ideological factors have much to gain from Muni's contribution.... Muni's work is a significant contribution to the unfolding events of Sri Lanka's ethnic conflict which has been compiled from an Indian perspective. Muni also highlights the weaknesses of India's mediating process which was prolonged without success. This is a tribute to his scholarship." --Journal of Contemporary Asia "Muni's study gives a very detailed account of the different stages of the Indian intervention. Its main value lies in the analysis of the political and security constraints of Indian foreign policy makers in dealing with the ethnic crisis in Sri Lanka. On the basis of his interviews with Singhalese. Tamil and Indian politicians, military leaders and intellectuals, Muni is able to give a very good picture of the various stages of the negotiations which finally led to the Peace Agreement.... Muni demonstrates how the various conflicts are intermeshed in South Asia and how internal conflicts can create bilateral or international tensions. Muni shows the often divergent assessments and the dilemmas of Indian foreign policy makers in dealing with the Sri Lankan crisis. At the same time he makes clear that the problem of balancing the dynamics of ethnic conflicts with national security concerns will remain on the agenda of Indian policy makers." --Internationales Asienfourm The ethnic crisis which today engulfs Sri Lanka has deep historical roots. India's response to developments in Sri Lanka is examined in the broad framework of India's approach to its neighbor's internal problems since 1947. The author comprehensively analyzes India's attitude toward Sri Lanka's ethnic conflict, comparing the policies of the government under Indira Gandhi, and then her son Rajiv. In particular, the author describes the implications and nuances of the Indo-Sri Lanka Agreement of 1987 and the role played by the Indian Peace Keeping force sent to Sri Lanka to assist in the implementation of the Agreement. One of the unique features of this study is that it underlines the critical role of socio-cultural linkages across national boundaries. "This is a solid, well-researched work examining India's involvement in Sri Lanka's continuing ethnic crisis. . . . S. D. Muni, an internationally respected scholar, . . . argues persuasively." --Choice "No student of India's foreign policy can afford to ignore this book." --The Statesman "S. D. Muni's book is the most careful overview of India-Sri Lanka relations (and the event leading up to the intervention) yet published." --The Hindu

Book Redefining Regional Power in International Relations

Download or read book Redefining Regional Power in International Relations written by Miriam Prys and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2012-05-04 with total page 258 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book examines the concept of regional power in international relations. Using the emerging powers of India and South Africa as the case studies, it explores how regional powers simultaneously differ and share common features. The book develops a method to classify and evaluate different types of regional powers and applies this typology to contemporary case studies of India and South Africa. Regional power is often expected to have a positive influence on region-specific problems of conflict, economic deprivation and political instability. In reality, an ‘achievement-expectations gap’ can be seen in many regional powers, which can be analysed and understood through observable variation in regional power. The author discovers that in addition to the management of the internal regional order, regional powers have to establish individuality whilst fitting into the global international environment, altering both regional dynamics and creating variance in the level of control within the region. Elucidating concepts and definitions, this book is an accessible and in-depth study that both introduces key concepts and provides a framework for the future study of regional power in international relations. Redefining Regional Power in International Relations will be of interest to students and scholars of regionalism and international relations.

Download or read book Why Allies Rebel written by Barbara Elias and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2020-07-02 with total page 353 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Why do powerful intervening militaries have such difficulty managing comparatively weak local partners in counterinsurgency wars? Set within the context of costly, large-scale military interventions such as the US war in Afghanistan, this book explains the conditions by which local allies comply with (or defy) the policy demands of larger security partners. Analysing nine large-scale post-colonial counterinsurgency interventions including Vietnam, Afghanistan, Iraq, Sri Lanka, Yemen, Lebanon, Cambodia, and Angola, this book utilizes thousands of primary source documents to identify and examine over 450 policy requests proposed by intervening forces to local allies. By dissecting these problematic partnerships, this book exposes a critical political dynamic in military interventions. It will appeal to academics and policymakers addressing counterinsurgency issues in foreign policy, security studies and political science.

Book Indian Foreign Policy

Download or read book Indian Foreign Policy written by Priya Chacko and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2013-06-17 with total page 249 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The rise of India as a major power has generated new interest in understanding the drivers of its foreign policy. This book argues that analysing India’s foreign and security policies as representational practices which produce India’s identity as a postcolonial nation-state helps to illuminate the conditions of possibility in which foreign policy is made. Spanning the period between 1947 and 2004, the book focuses on key moments of crisis, such as the India-China war in 1962 and the nuclear tests of 1972 and 1998, and the approach to international affairs of significant leaders like Jawaharlal Nehru. The analysis sheds new light on these key events and figures and develops a strong analytical narrative around India’s foreign policy behaviour, based on an understanding of its postcolonial identity. It is argued that a prominent facet of India’s identity is a perception that it is a civilizational-state which brings to international affairs a tradition of morality and ethical conduct derived from its civilizational heritage and the experience of its anti-colonial struggle. This notion of ‘civilizational exceptionalism’, as well as other narratives of India’s civilizational past, such as its vulnerability to invasion and conquest, have shaped the foreign policies of governments of various political hues and continue to influence a rising India.

Book The Future of South South Economic Relations

Download or read book The Future of South South Economic Relations written by Adil Najam and published by Zed Books Ltd.. This book was released on 2012-12-13 with total page 194 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In recent years, it has become apparent that South-South economic relations are increasing, and will continue to do so. There will be more trade agreements and more trade, more economic alliances and more political alliances with economic goals, more investment flows and an increasing acknowledgement that the Global South has more to offer than it has in the past. These new economics relations have great potential, both for harm and for good. In the absence of directed policies and intentional actors, imbalances of power and growing gaps in development will persist. With the right policies in place, however, these relationships could forge a new global order with greater economic and political equality. Covering a wide range of topics, including regional trade integration in Africa, the environmental impact of increased South-South trade, the changing patterns of South-South investment, and the effect of conflict on trade in South Asia, this ground-breaking volume presents an analysis of South-South economic relations, and how they might impact and be impacted by the rest of the world.

Book Why Humans Fight

  • Author : Siniša Malešević
  • Publisher : Cambridge University Press

  • ISBN : 1009178636

Download or read book Why Humans Fight written by Siniša Malešević and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2022-10-06 with total page 379 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Malešević offers a novel sociological answer to the age-old question: 'Why do humans fight?'. Instead of focusing on the motivations of solitary individuals, he emphasises the centrality of the social and historical contexts that make fighting possible. He argues that fighting is not an individual attribute, but a social phenomenon shaped by one's relationships with other people. Drawing on recent scholarship across a variety of academic disciplines as well as his own interviews with the former combatants, Malešević shows that one's willingness to fight is a contextual phenomenon shaped by specific ideological and organisational logic. This book explores the role biology, psychology, economics, ideology, and coercion play in one's experience of fighting, emphasising the cultural and historical variability of combativeness. By drawing from numerous historical and contemporary examples from all over the world, Malešević demonstrates how social pugnacity is a relational and contextual phenomenon that possesses autonomous features.
