Book excerpt: Excerpt from Modern Hinduism: Does It Meet the Needs of India? It is our purpose about once a year to publish a number of the Envelope Series of an apologetic character, a defense of the missionary motive and work. While we hear fewer objections to foreign missions than formerly, we hear enough to warrant us in furnishing special literature on the subject. What we want is Open-minded, honest and thorough discussion on the part of those who know. Such discussion you may look for in this little quarterly from time to time. To begin with, here is the question about India. Many who have visited that country say Hindu ism is good enough for the Hindus. Now is it? That is the question. What we want is facts, and conclusions based on facts not guesses, or imaginings or longings, and certainly not mis statements or distortions, but clear, sheer reali ties. Who can and will tell us the truth? Our mind turned at once to Dr. J. P. Jones, of Madura, the well-known author of Krishna or Christ, the man who has thirty years of living and close association with the Hindus behind his judgment, no mere traveler but a citizen of India, the man who is a friend of the Hindus, and who has proved his friendship by a life of devoted service in their behalf. Hear him. And when you hear, pass the word along. This' false idea about Hinduism is in the air, and you can do a distinct service to the Kingdom and to India by giving Dr. Jones a hearing. Do you take this quarterly? If not you ought. In it the American Board prints much of its best material. We are not afraid to have you ex amine any of our recent numbers. It will not be a question of money with you (the price is only ten cents) but of taking the time to send in your subscription. If at this point we might make a suggestion, it would be in the words of the some what over-worked motto: Do it now. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Religions of India: Brahmanism and Buddhism I'he study of religions outside of Christianity has now overcome many of the prejudices which hindered its earlier growth. It has no longer to contend with the suspicion that the effort to understand other religions will make us attach less value to our own. On the contrary, the tendency of the study of religions is seen more and more to strengthen the hold of Christianity upon us. The student of this science is led to see very clearly how all men need religion and have provided themselves in one way or another with access to'the powers above them. But it happens very rarely that even the most sympathetic study of a foreign religion leads anyone to prefer it to his own. In contemplating other faiths, we do, it is true, become aware that some features of Christianity are stronger than others and do more to qualify it to spread over the world. We have to distinguish between the essence of Christianity, in which lies the secret of its power, and its accidental features. That surely must confirm and not weaken the tie that binds us to Christ. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Proceedings of the Convention of Religions in India, Vol. 1 of 2 As promised in the Preface to Vol. I, we have made an attempt to give an outline of the evolution of religious ideas beyond India in our Introduction to the present volume. The relation of the Aryan religion to the rest of the religions represented in these volumes has been traced out side by side with their indepen dent growths, from the lives and sayings of the Teachers of the respective religions. But owing to the vastness of the subject and consequent want of space we might not have been able to do full justice to the different systems of religion dealt with. We therefore crave the indulgence of our readers for any short-comings that might have crept into it. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book Christianity the World Religion

Download or read book Christianity the World Religion written by John Henry Barrows and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-03-21 with total page 414 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Christianity, the World-Religion: Lectures Delivered in India and Japan My second purpose was to lodge in the Hindu mind our conviction that Christianity is essen tially a universal religion, divinely adapted to the spiritual needs of each man, whatever his race, rank or nation. The sensitive Hindu, who for long ages has scarcely looked beyond his own beloved Aryavarta, is not easily: °disposed to favor the claim that anything outside of India is mighty enough to take up and include his own land, with its great religious philosophies and its three thousand years of intellectual history. Christianity, although it had lingered since the fourth century on the West Coast in the Syrian Church, and although it had touched Southern India in the apostolic labors of Xavier, appeared to the Hindu mind chiefly as the religion of his English conquerors. Then he came to regard it as the faith belonging in various forms to the Western world of railroads and iron steamers, the world of fire-arms and materialistic science. He saw clearly some of the unlovely aspects of Christendom, and the name Christian had none of the attractiveness for him which it possesses for Europeans and Americans. Flattered by the praises, sometimes indiscriminate, of Western scholars, who unearthed for him his own sacred literature, he began to think that he possessed something already which rendered Christianity, at least for him, unnecessary. Of late years. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Heart of India: Sketches in the History of Hindu Religion and Morals N this little book I have brought together a few sketches of the things that are nearest to the heart of the millions of India. The heart is not the head, and therefore I have said but little of the great intellectual problems which have busied the Hindu brain for well-nigh two thousand years. But from the schools of the Pandits certain thoughts have gone forth which in a more or less vague form have become an integral part of the people's stock of ideas. Some thing therefore has been said of these, but not much. The main part of my task has been to shew what have been the worthiest answers given by the Hindus to the great questions of man's relation to God and to fellow-man. These answers have been many. Some are from learned schoolmen, like Sankara and Ramanuja others are from simple laymen, like Vemana. But all of them are utterances of the vital faith of millions. We dare not ignore them. If I have ventured to speak in condemnation of the unworthy legends which have gathered 5. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Religious Problem in India: Four Lectures Delivered During the Twenty-Sixth Annual Convention of the Theosophical Society at Adyar, Madras, 1901 India all the world's faiths are planted, and therefore here, and here alone, can they find their unity and mighty consummation. You may remember that some three or four years ago I spoke to you of four great faiths - Hinduism, Zoroastrianism, Buddhism and Christianity. That left three faiths still that found their home on Indian soil, the faith of Islam, the Jaina faith, the Sikh faith - the three remaining that make up the seven faiths of India and of the world. At the present time thev divide Indian from Indian and heart from heart; now they separate men of one faith from men of another, and those who worship but the one divide each other in His name. 0 my Brothers, if it may be that on this land that the Gods have blessed we shall make religious unity; if it may be that here one nation shall be builded of many faiths; if the Musulman can love the Hindu and the Hindu love the Musul man; if the Christian can clasp hands with the Parsi and the Parsi with the Christian; if the Jaina and the Buddhist and the Sikh can love each other as brethren and not hate each other as rivals; then shall be the triumph of religion, and then alone shall the name of God become a name of peace. Download or read book An Interpretation of India s Religious History written by Robert Allen Hume and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2015-06-15 with total page 230 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from An Interpretation of India's Religious History It seems almost and impertinence for one without and experience in India like Dr. Hume's to attempt even a brief introduction to these illuminating lectures on the religious history of India. Dr. Hume needs no outsiders commendation or correction; for he writes out of the treasures of long residence and devoted service in India, of painstaking study of its life and thought, and of sympathetic and reverent appreciation of its religious development. But one may well express his gratitude for the precise nature of the aim and spirit of these lectures, and for the detailed illustrations in which aim and spirit are indicated. For the distinguishing characteristic of the lectures is, that they are in earnest with Christ's conception of God as Father of all men, and strive to look at the complex religious phenomena of India in that light. Book Indian Painting Classic Reprint

Download or read book Indian Painting Classic Reprint written by Percy Brown and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-10-14 with total page 156 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Indian Painting Finally, brethren, whatsoever things are true. Whatsoever things are honourable, whatsoever things are just, whatsoever things are pure, whatsoever things are lovely, whatsoever things are of good report; if there be any virtue, and if there be any praise, think on these things. No section of the population of India can afford to neglect her ancient heritage. In her literature, philosophy, art, and regulated life there is much that is worthless, much also that is distinctly unhealthy; yet the treasures of knowledge, wisdom, and beauty which they contain are too precious to be lost. Every citizen Of India needs to use them, if he is to be a cultured modern Indian. This is as true Of the Christian, the Muslim, the Zoroastrian as of the Hindu. But, while the heritage of India has been largely explored by scholars, and the results of their toil are laid out for us in their books, they cannot be said to be really available for the ordinary man. The volumes are in most cases expensive, and are often technical and difficult. Hence this series of cheap books has been planned by a group of Christian men, in order that every educated Indian, Whether rich or poor, may be able to find his way into the treasures of India's past. Many Europeans, both in India and elsewhere, will doubtless be glad to use the series. The utmost care is being taken by the General Editors in selecting writers, and in passing manuscripts for the press. TO every book two tests are rigidly applied: every thing must be scholarly, and everything must be sympathetic. The purpose is to bring the best out of the ancient treasuries, so that it may be known, enjoyed, and used. Book The Sacred Books of the East Vol 48 Classic Reprint

Download or read book The Sacred Books of the East Vol 48 Classic Reprint written by F. Max Müller and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-11-22 with total page 828 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Sacred Books of the East, Vol. 48 The present translation of the Sribhashya claims to be faithful on the whole, although I must acknowledge that I have aimed rather at making it intelligible and, in a certain sense, readable than scrupulously accurate. If I had to rewrite it, I should feel inclined to go even further in the same direction. Indian Philosophy would, in my Opinion, be more readily and widely appreciated than it is at present, if the translators of philosophical works had been somewhat more concerned to throw their versions into a form less strange and repellent to the western reader than literal renderings from technical Sanskrit must needs be in many passages. I am not unaware of the peculiar dangers of the plan now advocated - among which the most obvious is the temptation it offers to the translator of deviating from the text more widely than regard for clearness would absolutely require. And I am conscious of having failed in this respect in more than one instance. In other cases I have no doubt gone astray through an imperfect understanding of the author's meaning. The fact is, that as yet the time has hardly come for fully adequate translations of comprehensive works of the type of the Sribhashya, the authors of which wrote with reference in many cases tacit - to an immense and highly technical philosophical literature which is only just beginning to be studied, and comprehended in part, by European scholars.
