Book excerpt: One of India's most distinguished scholars analyzes growth and change in the Indian economy over thirty years. Based primarily on the data available in the National Accounts for the period, Professor Rao's study also includes projections for the Indian economy up to the year 2000, and a consideration of the implications of his findings for India's economic policy. ...Dr Rao takes a futuristic peep into 2000 AD and observes that India will continue to be one of the poorest countries in the world in terms of its per capita product. Not a pleasing prophesy but Dr Rao makes some very useful suggestions on how to halt the continued stagnation...In sum, Dr Rao's latest study of national income trends should be read by every one who has a genuine concern for the country's future.' -- "Southern Economist, March 1983"" " "" Rao's exercise is probably the most comprehensive statistical account...of the last three decades of the economy...his findings provide additional up-to-date evidence for some of the old arguments, others throw new light on the functioning of the economy.' -- "Business India, March/April, 1983"" " "" A spectacular work has been done in the last chapter which contains some sectional projections of India's national income in the coming 2001 A D. The book will certainly satisfy those sophisticated readers who are willing to probe beyond the fundamental process of economic growth vis-a-vis intersectoral development.' -- "The Management Accountant, August 1983"" " "" An excellent research study which, though primarily addressed to scholars, will be of great interest to laymen also.' -- "State Enterprise, July/Sept, 1983"" " "" The book is an indispensableasset for any research library and is a monumental work useful for all researchers, academicians and those associated with economic planning and economic administration.' -- "Jodhpuir Management Journal, Vol 11"

Download or read book IMF Staff papers written by International Monetary Fund. Research Dept. and published by International Monetary Fund. This book was released on 1958-01-01 with total page 159 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This paper examines the effect transactions with the IMF have on the monetary situation within a country when the foreign exchange purchased from the IMF is used to meet a balance of payments deficit. In some countries, the national currency counterpart is kept on deposit to the credit of the IMF at the central bank. In other countries, the government substitutes a noninterest-bearing note for the national currency counterpart of a transaction with the IMF. It is with the effects of the latter practice that this paper is primarily concerned. The effect of a balance of payments deficit on the money supply will be offset if credit is expanded to finance a government deficit, investment by business, or spending by consumers. The ultimate effect on the money supply will depend upon how the government deals with the national currency turned over to it by the Exchange Equalization Account. Considerable caution is required in concluding that a balance of payments deficit is likely to be moderate and temporary.

Download or read book The Oxford Handbook of the Indian Economy written by Chetan Ghate and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2012-02-02 with total page 984 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: India's remarkable economic growth in recent years has made it one of the fastest growing economies in the world. Its rapid growth, however, has been accompanied by widening regional disparities, poverty, malnutrition, and socio-political instability. Understanding India's dualistic development process and the emergence of the Indian economic miracle are crucial in solving the obstacles India faces in transforming itself into a modern 21st-century economy. The Oxford Handbook of the Indian Economy features research on core topics by leading scholars to understand the Indian economic miracle and the key debates confronting the Indian economy. The Handbook moves beyond traditional boundaries by featuring areas of research that will be important in the future, setting an academic standard for current and future research on the Indian economy. The Handbook is divided into eight major sections featuring expert contributions on a host of issues. These range from India's historical development before and after 1947; tackling poverty through innovative public policy; industrialization; health, education, and the demographic transition; governance and institutional reform; macroeconomic policy reform; and India's interaction with the world economy. A final Looking Ahead chapter reflects upon an agenda for economic research in the 21st century. Ambitious in scope, diverse in its coverage of topics, and a rare unified and comprehensive treatment of India's complex and dynamic development process, The Oxford Handbook of the Indian Economy is a must-read for both researchers who are new to the field, as well as those who want to update and extend their knowledge to the frontier of the field.
