Book excerpt: This book, first published in 1962, is an analysis of the history of the philosophy of a country that has never distinguished philosophy from religion. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Religion is an integral part of our life. The answer to the question what is religion is subjective. Since the word `religion' and its cognates are common coinage across the literate world, most of us will have a fair appreciation of the term's connotations. Considering students and scholars alike are lacking an introductory textbook on the origins of religion in modern Western theory and archaeological practice, this work is designed to fill the lacuna. Historians of ideas and social science are often not clear as to how any given theory of religion might pertain to the known archaeological record, while exponents of prehistoric religion have worked with surprisingly narrow definitions of religious life. Many will locate the kernel of the matter in `practice' or in an active `spirituality'. Today the pressures of the global village have forced many of us to take off our blinkers and do some cross cultural homework. Religious Studies has emerged as an academic discipline (or intellectual pursuit) with one of its functions being to facilitate mutual understanding between traditions, and to ensure that the varieties of religious belief and experience are fairly appraised. The series, of which this book is a part, will be historically rather than theologically oriented. This book will cover such a vast area for investigation and it is designed to help students find their own way through the forest, pick the trees which interest them and learn how to scrutinise them in depth. Religious Studies is a multi-disciplinary activity and one is encouraged to turn over as many stones as possible to look at religions from as many different angles as possible--the psychological, anthropological, sociological, geographical, ecological, political, economic and the like-with some awareness of current theological debates as well. This book gives scope to the comparative method and all the great religions are treated side-by-side, with points of comparison and contrast drawn. This book begin with the large question of the origins and prehistory of religion, including the bearing anthropological study has on this question, before giving space to the larger traditions themselves. The comparative method is applied not only between such enormous aggregates of phenomena as (let us say) Buddhism and Islam, but between these and small-scale, tribal traditions as well. The book highlights that some religions will be difficult to separate from cultures because they amount to a total way of life. An attempt is made to try to interpret religion both as culture and as a distinctive set of forces in interaction with culture, or perhaps even against prevailing cultural forms. This book has been designed to help students find for themselves possible answers to existential or theological questions, but only as a side-effect to historical and phenomenological study, and as the author says "provide no such answers on a platter."

Book A Remarkable Political Movement

Download or read book A Remarkable Political Movement written by V. Shanmuganathan and published by Prabhat Prakashan. This book was released on 2014-01-01 with total page 158 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This concise book portrays the vignettes of what I call ‘A Remarkable Political Movement’. It draws upon my experiences in social and political activism. This remarkable movement; anchored to Indian view of nationalism; captivated my imagination. Subsequently; it became the preoccupation of my life. While still young; I came across an extraordinary letter written by Pandit Deendayal Upadhyay to his maternal uncle. The letter succinctly explains why the ideologue of Jana Sangh wanted to dedicate his life for the cause of the nation. Pt. Upadhyay says; “Any individual may achieve a very high degree of progress; but that has no significance unless his motherland too; registers corresponding progress.... We are nowadays interested only in reaping the harvest and have forgotten to provide the field with manure. Can we not forego a few worthless ambitions for the protection and benefit of our own people?” The letter turned a refreshing chapter in my life. It was an exposition that ‘giving’ makes one nobler than ‘taking’. It was in 1951 that Dr. Syama Prasad Mookerjee launched the Bharatiya Jana Sangh. The BJP is continuing the work of the Jana Sangh with a missionary zeal to make Bharat the greatest country in the world. The book also contains some articles on India’s rich cultural; spiritual and literary life.

Book Gods Heroes and their Story Tellers

Download or read book Gods Heroes and their Story Tellers written by V. Hari Saravanan and published by Notion Press. This book was released on 2014-01-01 with total page 837 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: We can hear Urumula Naganna’s drum roll during the rendition of the Sri Akammagaru Kaviya. An oral tradition which is as old as the hills is captured in the book Gods, Heroes and their Storytellers. Do you know the story of how the Madiga community came to inherit the right to skin cattle carcass and produce leather articles? How are contemporary Folk Oral Literatures connected to the Ramayana and the Mahabharata? There are many such stories and tradition bearers who doggedly go on in spite of the onslaught of the digital media. The author here has tried his best in keeping these traditions alive by not only telling the stories but also by living with the story tellers themselves. The rich details give us a window to a world which is not only very far away for our everyday mundane existence but also makes us retrospect on what we are missing out. Each of the tradition bearers are different and so are their stories and the region to which they belong. These are not merely stories but a way of life for these oral narrators who are fast disappearing in today’s consumerist landscape. The need of the hour is to keep alive these traditions and the tradition bearers.

  • Pages : 220 pages

Download or read book Veda Vihangam written by Samarpan and published by Pan Macmillan. This book was released on 2023-07-27 with total page 220 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Vedas – ?k, Sama, Yaju?, Atharva – are the oldest and most sacred Hindu scriptures. While these timeless texts have shaped Indian religious, social and cultural sentiments, their footprints are visible in practically every aspect of the Indian way of life. The chant of Gayatri and the sacred symbol O?, the growth of geometry, the invention of zero, the development of prosody, and much more, are directly related to the Vedas. Despite this enduring legacy, very few of us ever read, or even chance upon the Vedas and most of the existing, albeit misinterpreted, scholarship is courtesy of Western scholars. In Veda Vihangam: The Essential Veda, Hindu monk and teacher Samarpan unravels the majestic scope and immediate relevance of this set of religious texts by bringing to our attention and elucidating select mantras and hymns. Drawing from the great Saya?acarya’s commentary on the Vedas, Samarpan aligns the Vedic spiritual thought process with the contemporary world. Told in a lucid, easy-to-understand manner, Veda Vihangam is a true collectible and a must-read for all.
