Book India s Gold Rush The Effects of the Rising Gold Demand on Indian Economy

Download or read book India s Gold Rush The Effects of the Rising Gold Demand on Indian Economy written by Khushmita Sandhu and published by . This book was released on 2014-11-07 with total page 24 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Seminar paper from the year 2013 in the subject Economics - Other, grade: 9.0, course: BA hons Social Sciences, language: English, abstract: Gold, a name that has shone over centuries of human civilization is glittering today even more on account of global recession. Indians have an insatiable appetite for gold. Historically, the yellow metal has underpinned the financial security of individuals, families, kingdoms and the state. So, every bit of surplus savings from the family budget goes to buy gold. Added to this is the Indian women's fascination for gold jewellery. India's domestic production of gold is very limited; the rising demand has to be sourced from outside the country. Moreover, Gold as a commodity on its own does not add much to the productive capacity of the economy. When one buys gold, it either is stored in lockers or gets converted into jewellery. In both the cases, money spent on purchasing gold gets blocked since gold is not a productive asset. There are certain qualities of gold that make it a desirable investment option. Despite being an impoverished country with low per capita income, India tops the world in buying gold. India's exports have been declining for the last couple of years. With surging imports, the trade deficit and, therefore, the current account deficit are rising disturbingly. A high CAD impacts the value of currency which in turn makes imports expensive and adds to the fiscal deficit. During hard times, it is imprudent to divert the country's forex to buy gold. Gold India is the world's single largest gold bullion consumer. India owns more than 18,000 tonnes of above-ground gold stocks worth about $800bn. But India's fetish for gold threatens to take the shine off its fast-paced economic growth. [...] In this background, the present term paper will try to explore the effects of ever rising gold demand on the Indian economy, especially on current account deficit and measures adopted by government to balance it.

Book Indian Gold Jewellery Industry

Download or read book Indian Gold Jewellery Industry written by Sylvia Raha and published by Taylor & Francis. This book was released on 2024-04-16 with total page 72 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: India has a long-standing cultural and societal affinity with gold and gold jewellery. Gold metaphorically represents the sacredness, purity and immortality that bind religious beliefs and culture together. Accumulation of gold is associated with material and non-material cultures where the perceptions, attitudes and experiences of the members engaged in production and consumption are bound into a complex relationship. The idea of the book initially originated from the course of research work. It was found that India has the largest unorganised jewellery industry, in terms of manufacturing and consumption unit. Jewellery fabrication in India is not just a profession for the jewellers, but it has been a family tradition extending across generations. Gold jewellery makers (sunnar, swarnakars) are the spine of the jewellery industry. They acquired the skill of making jewellery from the experienced and learned gold smithery (karigars), either from their ancestors who were engaged in this business or from the craftsmen-cum-petty traders. The co-relations of castes, religion, culture, economy and class are intertwined with each other in such a way that made the gold jewellery industry sustainable. Surprisingly, there is an absence of literature on understanding the structural and functional aspects of the gold jewellery industry in India. This book explores the roles of sunars/swarnakars (goldsmith or jewellery makers), consumers, trade and the policies that bring a change in the gold jewellery industry in India and India’s position in the global market scenario. By focusing on their way of life, the book brings unique insights into the social and economic experience of the unorganised gold jewellery sector and the role of consumers in production.

Book Gold Prices and Financial Stability in India

Download or read book Gold Prices and Financial Stability in India written by Dr. Rabi N. Mishra and published by . This book was released on 2014 with total page 26 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: There has been an almost sustained rise in the international gold prices since 2002, with just one deep correction in 2008. As gold is an integral part of savings of a large number of investors, this has raised apprehensions whether any correction in gold prices will have destabilising implications on the financial markets. In this backdrop, the paper makes an attempt to analyse the implications of the correction in gold prices on financial stability in India. The paper covers empirical analysis on the inter-linkages between domestic and international gold prices and then it examines the nature of changes in the factors affecting international gold prices during the last two decades. While validating empirically the existence of complete inter-linkages between domestic and international gold prices, the paper goes on to conclude that there has been a structural shift in the factors affecting international gold prices in 2003. Short-run volatility in international gold prices used to be traditional factors such as international commodity prices, US dollar exchange rate and equity prices. However, since 2003, the same is largely due to the volatility in the US dollar exchange rate and mildly due to volatility in equity prices. In conclusion, the findings of the paper show that domestic and international gold prices are closely interlinked. Based on empirical evidences, the paper also concludes that implications of correction in gold prices on the Indian financial markets are likely to be muted.

Book A Review on Gold Quest in the Investment Portfolio by Indian Investors

Download or read book A Review on Gold Quest in the Investment Portfolio by Indian Investors written by Anli Suresh and published by . This book was released on 2013 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The perception about gold in India has come a long way from the days when its main function was to merely adorn and act as a status symbol. The emotional investment in the metal was so huge that parting with it seemed unthinkable. Consequently, it seldom yielded worthwhile returns. Now, however, it is becoming clear that an increasing number of Indians are realizing that gold deserves a place not just in the cupboard at home or the bank locker, but also in their investment portfolio. Gold purchases in India accounted for 32 per cent of the global total in 2010. However, in the near term, gold consumption in India is likely to increase marginally by 1.7 per cent during the year 2011 to touch around 980 tonnes compared to 963.1 tonnes consumed in 2010. Gold jewelry represented around 75 per cent of the total Indian gold demand in 2010, the remainder accounted for by investment and technology. Our macroeconomic forecast to 2020 shows India is poised for a very strong period of economic growth and this has significant, positive implications for all forms of gold purchasing in India. With 50 per cent of the Indian population, below 25 years and approximately 150 million weddings anticipated over the next decade, which will drive gold consumption. The objective of the study is to better comprehend the ever-growing demand for gold in India irrespective of the continuous escalation in its price. The study based on the hypotheses that Indian demand for savings and real income levels will drive gold, not by price. The concluding observation is that emerging socioeconomic trends may provide some challenges to the gold market; however, purchasing will remain underpinned by India's long-standing and deep cultural affinity for gold.

Book excerpt: Gold is the most liquid form of wealth for centuries. This distinct characteristic of the yellow metal has eluded researchers for several years and continues to do so. It is also used as a hedge against inflation or recession when the market does not provide optimal investment opportunities. Gold demand is a complex function of various economic determinants and is potential area of academic research etc. Therefore, this study attempts to examine level of impact of gold imports on current account deficit (CAD), and governance and regulation of gold markets in India. Finally, the study makes some suggestions to develop gold market and monetize 21,000 tonnes of gold held by households and temples in the country.
