Book The Law of Nations in Global History

Download or read book The Law of Nations in Global History written by C. H. Alexandrowicz and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2017-03-10 with total page 466 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The history and theory of international law have been transformed in recent years by post-colonial and post-imperial critiques of the universalistic claims of Western international law. The origins of those critiques lie in the often overlooked work of the remarkable Polish-British lawyer-historian C. H. Alexandrowicz (1902-75). This volume collects Alexandrowicz's shorter historical writings, on subjects from the law of nations in pre-colonial India to the New International Economic Order of the 1970s, and presents them as a challenging portrait of early modern and modern world history seen through the lens of the law of nations. The book includes the first complete bibliography of Alexandrowicz's writings and the first biographical and critical introduction to his life and works. It reveals the formative influence of his Polish roots and early work on canon law for his later scholarship undertaken in Madras (1951-61) and Sydney (1961-67) and the development of his thought regarding sovereignty, statehood, self-determination, and legal personality, among many other topics still of urgent interest to international lawyers, political theorists, and global historians.

Book excerpt: In this volume, scholars specializing in different dimensions of foreign-policy analysis examine the dynamics of India's international relations. The volume reviews the economic growth that has propelled it to the status of a globally recognized power, and examines its nuclear policy and maritime strategy as a register of its present capabilities and future aspirations. The news media, often neglected in the study of international politics, are studied as an important index to-and catalysis for-the formulation of government policies. The volume also comprehensively analyses India's bilateral and multilateral relations, their influence on the stability of the subcontinent, their bearing on the country's international presence, and their relevance for its political ambitions.

Book Indo US Relations The Formative Years 1947 1960

Download or read book Indo US Relations The Formative Years 1947 1960 written by George Thadathil, PhD and published by Notion Press. This book was released on 2022-11-12 with total page 238 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Russian invasion of Ukraine in February 2022 put the Indian foreign policy in a bind. The West sought the solidarity of all like-minded countries to oppose the Russian aggression in Ukraine. India, as usual, was unwilling to join either side. The European Union and the United States have been very unhappy with the Indian stand. After more than 75 years of independence, India continues to maintain its strategic independence, although the main thrust of the US policy towards India has always been to make India an American ally; first against Chinese communism and now as a counterweight to growing military might and economic strength of China. The present work seeks to examine the tumultuous relationship between the two countries at the height of Cold War rivalries.
