Book excerpt: This India album brings together over twenty years of Raghu Rai's work in color. Trained in the competitive melee of Indian newspaper photography, Raghu delighted his editors from the earliest days of his career by returning from assignments with images that were different, expressing in dramatic form and intensity the essence of the story -- and capturing human emotions in images that imprinted themselves on the conscience of India. For Raghu Rai India is a continuum of heightened experience and he savors each moment by intensely observing details in the kaleidoscope of humanity and nature, the changing forms and colors and patters that move and reshape themselves until they present an image that satisfies his critical and masterly eye. "India is to be experienced," he tells young, aspiring photo-journalists. "Only then can your photographs have meaning." His India is everyday India -- the life of his rural childhood. His photographs talk about the simple people, the village people, the rituals and routines that make up the rhythm of their days, their spiritual fervor, their dignity and sense of color and self-adornment as well as the earthy beauty of their humble homes and the unconscious artistry of their agricultural labor. This album is his personal experience of India -- his reflection of the land that continues to absorb and surprise and satisfy his continuous creative search.

Book Dream Zones

Book excerpt: Drawing on five years of research in and around India's special economic zones (SEZs) Dream Zones follows the stories of regional politicians, corporate executives, rural farmers, industrial workers and social activists to show how the pursuit of growth, profit and development shapes the politics of industrialisation and liberalisation. This book offers a timely reminder that global political economy is shaped by sentiments as much as reason and that un-realised expectations are the grounds on which new hopes for the future are sown.

Book Brand New Nation

Download or read book Brand New Nation written by Ravinder Kaur and published by Harper Collins. This book was released on 2021-08-01 with total page 385 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The early twenty-first century was an optimistic moment of global futures-making. The old 'third-world' nations were rapidly embracing the script of unbridled capitalism in the hope of arriving on the world stage. Brand New Nation reveals the on-the-ground experience of the relentless transformation of the nation-state into an attractive investment destination for global capital. The infusion of capital not only rejuvenates the nation, it also produces investment-fuelled nationalism, a populist energy that can be turned into a powerful instrument of coercion. Grounded in the history of modern India, the book reveals how the forces of identity economy, identity politics, publicity, populism, violence and economic growth are rapidly rearranging the liberal political order the world over.

Book Desi Dreams

  • Publisher : Primus Books
  • Release : 2012
  • ISBN : 9380607474
  • Pages : 181 pages

Download or read book Desi Dreams written by Ashidhara Das and published by Primus Books. This book was released on 2012 with total page 181 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Desi Dreams focuses on the construction of self and identity by Indian immigrant professional and semi-professional women who live and work in the US. The focus in this anthropological fieldwork is on Indian immigrants in the San Francisco Bay Area. They have often been defined as a model minority. Indian immigrant women who have achieved entry into the current technology based economy in the Silicon Valley value the capital-accumulation, status-transformation, socio-economic autonomy, and renegotiation of familial gender relations that are made possible by their employment. However, this quintessential American success story conceals the psychic costs of uneasy Americanization, long drawn out gender battles, and incessant cross-cultural journeys of selves and identities. The outcome is a diasporic identity through the recomposition of Indian culture in the diaspora and strengthening of transnational ties to India.

Book Agency and Knowledge in Northeast India

Download or read book Agency and Knowledge in Northeast India written by Michael Heneise and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2018-08-06 with total page 195 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Nagas of Northeast India give great importance to dreams as sources of divine knowledge, especially knowledge about the future. Although British colonialism, Christian missions, and political conflict have resulted in sweeping cultural and political transformations in the Indo-Myanmar borderlands, dream sharing and interpretation remain important avenues for negotiating everyday uncertainty and unpredictability. This book explores the relationship between dreams and agency through ethnographic fieldwork among the Angami Nagas. It tackles questions such as: What is dreaming? What does it mean to say ‘I had a dream’? And how do night-time dreams relate to political and social actions in waking moments? Michael Heneise shows how the Angami glean knowledge from signs, gain insight from ancestors, and potentially obtain divine blessing. Advancing the notion that dreams and dreaming can be studied as indices of relational, devotional, and political subjectivities, the author demonstrates that their examination can illuminate the ways in which, as forms of authoritative knowledge, they influence daily life, and also how they figure in the negotiation of day-to-day domestic and public interactions. Moreover, dream narration itself can involve techniques of ‘interference’ in which the dreamer seeks to limit or encourage the powerful influence of social ‘others’ encountered in dreams, such as ancestors, spirits, or the divine. Based on extensive ethnographic research, this book advances research on dreams by conceptualising how the ‘social’ encompasses the broader, co-extensive set of relations and experiences - especially with spirit entities - reflected in the ethnography of dreams. It will be of interest to those studying Northeast India, indigenous religion and culture, indigenous cosmopolitics in tribal India more generally, and the anthropology of dreams and dreaming.

Book Between Dreams and Ghosts

  • Pages : 296 pages

Download or read book Between Dreams and Ghosts written by Andrea Wright and published by Stanford Studies in Middle Eas. This book was released on 2021 with total page 296 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: More than one million Indians travel annually to work in oil projects in the Gulf, one of the few international destinations where men without formal education can find lucrative employment. Between Dreams and Ghosts follows their migration, taking readers to sites in India, the United Arab Emirates, and Kuwait, from villages to oilfields and back again. Engaging all parties involved--the migrants themselves, the recruiting agencies that place them, the government bureaucrats that regulate their emigration, and the corporations that hire them--Andrea Wright examines labor migration as a social process as it reshapes global capitalism. With this book, Wright demonstrates how migration is deeply informed both by workers' dreams for the future and the ghosts of history, including the enduring legacies of colonial capitalism. As workers navigate bureaucratic hurdles to migration and working conditions in the Gulf, they in turn influence and inform state policies and corporate practices. Placing migrants at the center of global capital rather than its periphery, Wright shows how migrants are not passive bodies at the mercy of abstract forces--and reveals through their experiences a new understanding of contemporary resource extraction, governance, and global labor.
